Today we celebrate the Venerable Nun Martyr Eudocia the Samaritan. Saint Eudocia was a pagan who led a sinful life of all earthly pleasures and debauchery. She one day, however, heard a monk in the house next door to hers reading from the scriptures about the coming Judgment and Christ's love and forgiveness of all who repent. These words pierced her soul and she approached the monk and asked him to instruct her more in the Christian life. She soon sold all her possessions and joined a convent as a nun. One day, one of her former lovers came to the monastery, begging her to return to her former life, but she reproved him and he was struck down dead by an invisible force. Out of pity, she prayed to the Lord to resurrect the man and he returned to life. During her life there was a great persecution of Christians, of which Eudocia suffered greatly and was eventually beheaded. An imposing olive tree on Corfu, known as ‘Evdokia’ by local residents, is estimated to be between 1086 and 1200 years old, according to recent studies by German scientists from the Dresden University of Technology (TU Dresden).
The study was presented at an event held in June on Corfu, spearheaded by the efforts of biologist Eleni Louka and Eleni Konofaou, founder of the Hellenic Union of Heptanesians (HUH) – a name referring to the hepta, or seven, main islands in the Ionian Sea.
Konofaou told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency that the islanders decided to contact dendrochronology specialists at TU Dresden’s Institute of Forest Botany and Forest Zoology independently, after a series of failed attempts to attract the interest of academics and government officials in Athens.
Scientists from Dresden first arrived in the town of Strongyli in 2014, where the tree is located, and began the examination process, with Louka’s help, who is a resident of the town.

από πενήντα χρόνια ελληνικού κινηματογράφου μας έμειναν όμως στιγμές, σκηνές-κρεμμύδι που είναι δικές μας, που θα τις ξαναβλέπουμε σε θολές κόπιες και στο youtube. η ευδοκία, το μετέωρο, ο δεκαπενταύγουστος, τα φτηνά τσιγάρα, ο “γκρέμισέ το” στο όλα είναι δρόμος και ο πρώιμος κοφτερός περάκης (καλύτερη νεο-ελληνική ταινία το Βιος και Πολιτεία). και πάνω απ’ όλα μια δεκάδα ατάκες να τις αναμασάμε σαν γέροι στα παιδιά μας.
