Monday, December 7: Only Living Witness, āDecemberā
Although āDecemberā was beloved enough that Shadows Fall reverently covered it for their Fallout from the War compilation, the final track on Only Living Witnessā debut still shouldāve transcended its ultimate status as a Boston-area favorite. Ā It wasnāt just that the track- or Only Living Witness in general- was underrated, because this was simply one of the best tunes to come out of the mid ā90s metal underground. Ā āDecemberā fit the times thanks to Craig Silvermanās chunky riffs and Eric Stevensonās thick drumming, but it also had an unerring sense of craft, was incredibly well-paced, and Jonah Jenkinsā towering vocals were absolutely timeless. Ā It was heavy and unmistakably metal, but also thoughtful and very accessible; the song acknowledged mid ā90s trends without bowing down to them, and proved that Only Living Witness was doing their own thing, and doing so brilliantly. Ā Brian Fair wrote glowingly of the band in his notes for Fallout from the War, and he was absolutely right in singling out Only Living Witness as one of the great bands of their time, as well as a trailblazing act in the Massachusetts metal scene.

Issue #7 begins exactly where the last arc ended, two plus years ago. Not to be outdone, Wayward #13 delivers one of the best action sequences of the series yet, and gives us plenty to chew on.
