there's a lot going on in the world right now, and this about a very niche sports league, so I am not surprised I haven't seen anything about it here however
the USL Championship is potentially going to go on strike tomorrow and that's kinda crazy to me
the USL (united soccer league, in this case) is the Division 2 soccer league here in the United States. Their opening weekend is this weekend (Mar. 6-8) and it might not happen.
Last week, the USL Players Association announced that 90% of its members voted to authorize a strike. NINETY! I have no idea how many players are in the union, but if its anywhere near all of them that could potentially be 499 players across the country who agree that the current proposed contract agreement isn't good enough to continue.
and its like yes always side with the workers but then you dig into their asks and its like Jesus christ you are working for a robber baron, what do you mean 4 of the teams in the league dont pay for the players health insurance. what do you mean some of you are getting paid $32,000 a year and that part of that $32,000 covers your rent and that your rent could potentially be for a room in a house with 3 other players because lodging is deemed acceptable as long as there isn't more than 4 guys to a bathroom. WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOURE OK WITH THIS BECAUSE THE PREVIOUS CBA INCLUDED $0 CONTRACTS!
and people are trying to say they're being greedy asking for $625,000 for name, image, likeness rights. because they based it off the pwhl. who are more famous than them, yes. we can hild two truths. the pwhl is more famous and deserves the amount they're getting for NIL, and the usl players deserve more for NIL. tbh what this is telling me is that the pwhl should be getting more in NIL but thats not my fight as a soccer blog I suppose.
likr, break it down, there's ~555 players. That's only $1126 extra dollars a year for your Fucking Face! that's my bi-weekly take home pay FOR A YEARS WORTH OF YOUR FACE. can you imagine if you worked in an industry that already asked you to put your health and wellbeing on the line, to use your body as a machine, and then have them say "actually also, we're going to use your face to sell people on the idea of coming to games this month, which will make me, the owner, quite a good deal more money then I pay you, here's 11 dollars"
like thats whats currently going on, they get 75k for NIL, which they agreed to because, again $0 contracts.
And then cherry on top the league emailed them all saying "here's how you can resign from the union before a strike happens"
I hope they do go on strike, I hope they go on strike and torpedo the usl division 1 whatever nonsense they have planned and i hope the players get a deal they think is fair.
