As an enneagram 3, I've struggled with expecting so much of myself, and having so many goals, lists, and priorities, that I ultimately get overwhelmed, hit a wall, procrastinate, and am unproductive and unhappy if I don't achieve them all. If this is something that you deal with too, especially with the recent New Year and resurgence of people trying to better themselves, I wanted to share some things that help me.
1) Thinking ONLY about the next 2 things you need/want to do. Then, when they're done, move on to the next two. It tricks me into thinking that my to-do list really isn't that long (lots of small lists vs one long intimidating list)
2) Assessing what needs to be done. For example, usually on Sundays I like to do all of my self care and self-maintenance, and make sure that I get my house nice and clean and reset for the week ahead. I used to complete everything on my master self-care list and cleaning lists EVERY week, when it wasn't necessary. Sometimes I could get a few extra days out of my hair, or there just weren't enough dishes in the sink to make it a priority for the day. Instead I've recently been asking myself what needs to be done the most in making sure that that's a priority. It makes the biggest difference and gives the biggest sense of satisfaction, AND prevents me from stressing myself out about small and unnecessary to-do's.
3) Finally, just realizing that it's not about getting everything done perfectly and you're not going to check every single box every single day. Focus on the things that you've been able to get done and not what you haven't. Everyday is different and we can try to be as organized as we want but, every day realistically is going to have a different set of goals and priorities. It's okay.
So yeah, I'm writing this more for myself to refer back to later but if it does happen to help anybody that's great. ✨
