So. I have like. No idea what to think of Endou Daisuke's character?
Mind you, I still need to finish the OG season 3 but I at least watched far enough to get the gist of it. So like... really, what are we supposed to think about this guy?
All throughout season 1, it's said that Endou Daisuke was a great guy and a legendary soccer player, and his 'death' is clearly mourned by many. He's Endou (Mamoru)'s idol and the memory of him is super important to him. His notebooks are invaluable to the Raimon team, and this whole spiel continues during season 2.
And then in season 3 he's... apparently alive? Tbh the guy's character was way different from the impression I got in season 1 and 2, did anyone else also have that or was it just me?
Anyway. Daisuke being alive is fine, typical Inazuma Eleven twist, and even the reasoning for it is okay - he left due to a threat to his life. I can even see the logic behind faking your death in that situation. If we're being altruistic, we could assume he's also doing it to protect his family and he couldn't come back for 40 years because his nemesis was still out there and still a threat. And Daisuke then building a new life for himself, making new connections- fair! He's left everything he's ever known and loved, can't blame him for trying to find a way to,,, move on, I guess.
Because honestly, it does sorta seem like he moved on?
I get why he left, why he faked his death, but... he still let his family think he was dead for 40 years and then when it was finally safe and he could return to the land of the living he... went to the whole other side of the world again. Without ever coming home it seems?
And honestly all I can really think of here is his daughter, Mamoru's mother - Atsuko. Daisuke disappeared about 40 years before the anime and Atsuko doesn't look like she's much older. She's definitely not approaching 60 yet, so that means she wasn't even an adult, and might even have been a preteen, maybe younger. And Daisuke just... calls? Doesn't even visit her? Doesn't seem to care all that much, actually. Which, what? I get that he's no longer got a life in Japan so he might not be interested in coming back - except in the anime it's stated clearly that he's moved to yet another country to start a new soccer team, so clearly he didn't stick around Little Gigant for long after the FFI - but he didn't even visit his daughter after missing her whole life?
I just... don't know what to think here. He's so clearly portrayed as a great person by so many people, and nobody seems angry at him for his actions - and I know it's not in Mamoru's character to be angry but he doesn't even seem to have any questions about the whole thing, he's just happy and that feels a little unrealistic - but that whole arc just leaves me really confused. We saw more of him in GO, of course, and it seems that he and Mamoru have a good relationship from what I remember, but... I just really don't know what to think about this guy, y’know?
I might have missed things so please do explain to me if there's something important about his story that I don't remember! I never played the games and it's been a decade since I watched the OG, and, honestly, also a while since I watched GO, and for this post I didn't do as much research as I usually do. This is just me trying to explain where my confusion comes from for this storyline and if there's details that explain it better I'd love to hear it. I'm also wondering how the rest of the fandom views this, because I haven't been able to find much on it, to be honest. So please do let me know your opinions! I just have no idea how to approach the guy in writing and I'd love to get some ideas XD
