fudou, like tsunami, is a high-impact character.
I think that one scene where he freaks his fuck w/ sakuma and genda in the hospital is really memorable. defining character moment for sure
but I've also always thought fudou had something missing. for as interesting of a character as he is, I can't help but feel like he needed something.. more to become the character he had the potential to become.
considering his backstory, it's kind of a shame how much little focus it had. the narrative just kind of mentions it and establishes it as the cause of fudou's Issuesβ’οΈ but I find it very surface-level.
for the level of complexity that fudou has, I think he deserved to get his backstory explored way more. more about what he was like before, how he saw his parents before and after his father leaving, how it affected him on a personal level.
I also feel like his backstory doesn't completely explain why fudou is the way he is. I would've liked to see that fudou was ALWAYS a bit messed up, even way before his father left, because otherwise his backstory doesn't reallyyy explain all of his issues. again, considering the inherent complexity of fudou's character, I feel like he REALLY needed that extra screen time. even though the little that we got is enough to make him likeable, there's a lot of untapped potential with him that goes totally unexplored in the anime (no idea if the games do it differently but somehow I doubt it).
this is true not only for his backstory but also his personality. I would've loved to see MORE of him interacting with the others and getting under their skin. I think being a vicious little shit is the most interesting quality fudou has. it's his DEFINING characteristic. in s2 his relevance is too "passing" to be explored in further depth, alright, but in s3 I feel like.. he gets washed over a little bit.
we see him being mean to the others and a bit of a menace, but honestly ? they could've gone further. they SHOULD'VE gone further. like cruelty level banter. I'm talking psychological warfare. I wanted to see more of fudou acting scary, manic and manipulating others just to mess with them or get what he wants. in s3 he's just kind of an edgelord, not nearly as exaggeratedly evil as he was in s2, which narratively makes sense because he went from supporting villain to redeemable main cast character, but still.. if they weren't cowards they could keep his s2 level craziness and still redeem him
tldr: I like him but I don't like how they watered him down in s3 and didn't give him as much development as he deserved. he acts more like a tool to propel other characters' development (like kidou's) than anything.
also him and tsunami should kiss because it would be really really funny. it's the most unstoppable force x immovable object ship ever. fudou would hate tsunami and everything he represents with a passion and he would HATE to fall in love with him. in return tsunami would experience hardship for the first time in his life as he is tasked with the impossible mission of making fudou act like less of a dick. it's perfect. absolute match made in heaven. they would try to kill each other
also look at them in matching outfits
