A cracktheory about real life: lawsuits have replaced the code duello. Now, as it was centuries ago, the privileged classes now seek satisfaction for "grievances" they have experienced by engaging in a ritualized contest with binding and severe consequences for the loser. And this was only available to the higher classes, and sometimes to those with enough wealth to copy them.
Once one starts thinking about lawsuits as either duels, or as a privileged person beating the crap out of a commoner with impunity, the litigiousness of our society suddenly makes so much more sense.
Pre-Wenclair. In the middle of a circle of students, Wednesday has a hand to her cheek. She glares at Enid, who looms over a discarded glove.
Enid: Wednesday Friday Addams, I challenge you to a duel!
Wednesday: An unexpectedly bold move, Sinclair.
Wednesday: *nods* Fine. I accept.
Enid: *relieved exhale*
Wednesday: As the challenged, I choose sharp instruments—
Enid: *glances nervously at the crowd*
Thing: 👍
Wednesday: —and adhering to Addams family tradition, the challenger may select our weapons.
Enid: *gaze snaps back to Wednesday* Then I choose your sharpest blade.

“This is unacceptable!” Emmrich cut off the gauze Rook had bound Lucanis’ arm in. “You could have killed him, Rook!”
“I could have. It’s harder to miss on purpose. These days.”
“The skill he threw that knife was unmatched.” Lucanis beamed.
“Into your ARM!” Emmrich grabbed an elf root potion and handed it to Lucanis. He winked at Rook and took it in one swallow.
“It was exquisite.” Lucanis’s face twisted with the bitter potency of the potion.
“Thank you.” Rook blushed.
“You’re children!” Emmrich held his hand aloft over the wound and the smallest fingers of the fade wove the wound together from the inside out.
“It was nice to duel again.” Rook watched closely.
Emmrich pushed him away from blocking the light. “If you ever want to, Emmrich, it would be good practice for me to duel a mage.”
“Who would you run to for heals when you stab me?” Emmrich rolled his eyes.
“Bellara?” Rook was back blocking the light as he craned to watch the spell work.
“I was being sarcastic.”
