Tasting: Chou Shi “King of Duck Shit” Dan Cong Oolong
Yes you heard that name right. I am tasting a King of Duck Shit Dan Cong Oolong. This particular type of oolong comes from Ping Keng Tou village. The teas gets is odd, lovable and unique name from the yellowish brown soil found in the village. And because villagers wanting to protect their unique tea bushes, told outsiders that the color of the soil was from large amounts of duck shit and began calling theirs teas Ya Shi Xiang or Duck Shit Aroma.
But weird and gross name aside, this tea was fantastic! While most Dan Cong Oolong teas such as this one, including other duck shit aroma oolongs, are usually lightly oxidized to create a darker oolong tea this particular one has gone through a new process that stops oxidization at a very early stage. The result is a beautiful, vibrant and aromatic oolong tea.
The aroma of the dry leaf was fresh and potent with rich notes of cooked rice, floral perfume and some grassy notes, similar to a Japanese sencha. The brewed teas came out a delightful pale yellow, similar to white peach nectar.
The first steep tasted of cooked rice with mellow feel on the mouth. Notes of magnolia flowers and vegetal undertones kinds of like cooked green beans. The second infusion brought out more of a sweetness in the tea. The vegetal notes of the tea began to disappear and the floral fragrance was more noticeable on the back of the throat and tongue.
By the third and fourth steeps, the flavor of cooked rice and vegetal notes were almost completely gone and the beautiful floral perfume took center stage, with much more noticeable sweetness.
This teas was absolutely outstanding. So outstanding that I have given the tea the first 5 out of 5 star rating so far. It is a tea that I will no doubt be keeping around in my private collection, and I can’t wait to try my other duck shit aroma oolong.
