I knoooow its an unpopular opinion but I do actually think EDI and the geth dying in the destroy ending is necessary. So much of that game is about ruthless calculus. Who and what do you sacrifice in order to save as many people as possible? What do you save when you know you can't save everything? How do you shoulder that guilt? You save the entire galaxy. You secure a future free from a cycle more ancient than the entire lifetime of your planet. You do what no one has ever done before. You don't get to walk away from that with everything in tact. You have to lose something. And if you get the "perfect" ending, you then have to live with that. You have to build something out of those ashes.
Trilogy Appreciation Week Day 7: Future
This bond that ties us together is something the Reapers will never understand. It's more powerful than any weapon, stronger than any ship. It can't be taken or destroyed. The next few hours will decide the fate of everyone in the galaxy. Every mother. Every son. Every unborn child. They're trusting you… depending on you to win them their future. A future free from the threat of the Reapers. But take heart. Look around you. You're not in this fight alone. We face our enemy together, and together we will defeat them.

i know we all love the idea of post war femshep finally getting to settle down and adopt tiny krogans/have little blue babies/the white picket fence and 2.4 kids/ but i also really love the idea of a childfree femshep.
like, she's dedicated her WHOLE LIFE to looking out for other people. part of me thinks she wants/deserves a break to just live (and get some godamn therapy). like let my girl go on holiday, go to London (for Anderson), hike a mountain, decorate a room that's not a bunk, keep some fish alive, finish her model ship collection and finally discover something outside of surviving.
not saying she wouldn't find ways to mother (like come on you know she's not retiring, she's training recruits, taking a fondness to the scrappy ones). but it's on her terms. she fought for this life and now she gets to live it /for her/.

„Does this unit have a soul?”
Gasp. A shuddering clinging to air. Broken shards of a life over.
“I’d rather risk non-functionality with the crew of the Normandy than risk it alone.”
Destroy or be destroyed. No other way.
She was ready to throw her life away, along with those she condemned to perish, and now…
“I’m proud of you.”
Gasp. Gasp. Gasp. Breathing fills the quiet rubbles around her. Faint sirens somewhere beyond her comprehension.
“Shepard… I’m going to modify my self-preservation code now.”
Shooting echoes around her. Prisms of red, all-consuming… Shepard braced herself. If she was to go, if she was to drag others down with her, let it be a spectacle to behold. Let the aftermath etch their white-hot memories into the fabric of the universe forever.
“Because the Reapers are repulsing. They are devoted to nothing but self-preservation.”
Then why is she breathing? Why is her body draped almost elegantly over the skeletons of the dead?
“I am different.”
“I know,” she whispered to the debris. “I know.”
“Does this unit have a soul?”
“It did,” she sobs; the helmet no longer distorting her voice. It sounded like defeat. “You had.”
