there's something so friends-to-lovers wish-fulfillment about "American Girls" by Harry Styles.
Harry, a Brit, presumably friends with other Brits, sings:
"I've known you for ages", it's all that I've heard
My friends are in love with American girls
Perhaps some of these USA woman x Brit partner couples did in fact meet when they were little. But I think Harry's use of hyperbole -- this is "all" that he's heard, the only explanation for romantic synergy that anyone has offered, now surely that's an exaggeration -- indicates that these couples are saying they feel as if they've known each other for ages. Even short romantic relationships can get incredibly intimate incredibly quickly.

My friends are in love with American girls
Harry expands the hyperbole. Now it's not only his friends who are "all" getting together with American women they connect deeply with, but so are the fans he sees on world tours, the internationally famous producers he's worked with, and so on.
Harry remains an observer of all this love and time-bending connection. And I think it's making him lonely. Making him wish for that instant friends-to-lovers feeling, so much so that he's wondering if he should hop on this bandwagon and try again to find himself an American girl, too. It's worked for everyone else.
The song ends with a repeated chorus. No bridge and no outro: no cathartic revelation. Just that howling chorus vocal, over and over.
That's because this is a hollow and hungry longing for a physics-defying feeling everyone else seems to have except you.
