Plant of the Day
Wednesday 3 November 2021
At a beautiful historic Japanese-style garden in Hertfordshire, UK, the last of the deeply dissected leaves of Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' (downy Japanese maple, full moon maple) were turning colour and decorating the ground. This small to medium-size tree which will produce a broad crown as it ages. It grows in moist but well-drained soil and the leaf colour is said to be best in partial shade. The Japanese name for this cultivar is ‘Maiku Jaku’ which means “dancing peacock”, the perfect name for these lovely leaves.
