Ok I love my angry vengeful King Creativity trying to take over the mindscape as much as the next fander.
But consider this. Fusing back together also gave the king the twinsâ (*cough* Romanâs *cough*) self worth issues.
When the King fuses back together, heâs not mad at the other sides, at least, he acts like he isnât, possibly believes he isnât. He just wants to help Thomas. Is that so bad? He just needs to prove himself, prove to them that he is worth his role.
So he sets about spreading his creativity and imagination everywhere. He spreads it to every corner of the mind palace, trapping each of the sides in paradises of their own making. They wonât want to leave so they wonât stop him.
But Virgil knows this is all wrong. He didnât know Creativity like the others but he knows that, like Roman, like himself before, he needs to feel heard and understood.
So virgil needs to brave each part of the mindscape to free each other sides and reach out to the king to help him see sense, or split him again before he does irreparable damage to Thomasâs psyche.
Virgil: starbucks employees (also has a shop with a bunch of shitpost shirts he and Remus came up with)
Janus: lawyer
Remus: shock horror writer
Social Media
Roman: uses Tumblr as a kind of diary to post about auditions. Uses Instagram to show his art and videos of him singing either disney or musical music (sometimes drags along the other sides, Patton is always excited, he can't post any with Remus without it being flagged, Logan, Virgil and Janus are usually reluctant). (and of course selfies)
Patton: has an Instagram to follow Roman. Has a Tumblr to follow Roman and Logan (Virgil refuses to give the name of his). Also has Facebook to follow his family, friends and parents of kids who he babysits
Logan: has a Tumblr to post what he teaches in his classes because he believes you shouldn't have to pay to get a half decent job you might be able to live off- also has Linkedin. Roman forced him to make an Instagram account and he follows: Roman, the college he teaches at, NASA
Virgil: has a semi-popular Tumblr page (he promotes his shop there) and two sude blogs he also puts in the description (one for educating people on anxiety, homophobia, transphobia and other things he experiences and the other for things like racism and sexism and other important issues he doesn't experience). Also has Spotify where he displays his anxiety driven music and Youtube where he makes videos about how to handle anxiety. Still maintains his MySpace page, it'll bounce back. (Roman also forced him to get Instagram but he deleted his account)
Janus: Has Instagram and Twitter to promote himself and post political stuff (most of it is a lie but he does have a certain ironic tone)
Remus: has an Instagram to send weird shit to his brother and a Twitter and Tumblr to stalk the other sides. (also to promote and post his stories and smutty fanfic). Has AO3 and Wattpad to post even more smut. also totally doesn't post pictures of janus' snakes because he really likes them and may steal them-
Pets
Roman: has a cat, he takes it everywhere and features in almost all of his Instagram videos. May or may not have another account dedicated to her (he definitely does). His biggest fear is his cat (and maybe hia friends...) dying
Patton: has at least one dog but no one is truly sure because he always has a house full of animals
Logan: doesn't own any pets (except those three birds he bought for his birthday and the cat he saved but apart from that he has n o p e t s)
Virgil: has a whole room dedicated to spiders and lizards and other animals most people would find creepy but he finds strangely calming
Janus: owns two snakes, he lets them roam around the house. Has noticed Remus try to steal them on numerous occasions
Remus: has a cat he stole from the alley behind his apartment and a snake Janus gave him in hope that he would stop trying to steal (he has not)
Other
Roman: sings constantly. Won't stop. Ever. Also has a movie night everynight and invites at least one friend round to join him. Wardrobe is mainly very formal clothes but has a couple hoodies (one of which may be stolen from Virgil-) t-shirts (again, totally not stolen) sweatpants and trainers for bad days when he doesn't feel too creavtive or energetic. Most of his clothes are red or/and white. Huge extrovert- doesn't know how Virgil can go days without human contact
Patton: keeps trying to pet Roman's cat and Roman has to keep stopping him. Never ending dad jokes, says everyone is his child, no arguments. Also his wardrobe is comprised of polo shirts, khaki trousers, hoodies, socks and sandals. Lots if his clothes are light blue or grey. Extrovert/ambivert
Logan: volunteers at the library to read and teach because he really enjoys it (plus the little kids smiles make him so happy buy don't tell anyone). Wardrobe is all shirts, ties and jeans (look, it's canon that he wears jeans and who am i to argue) lots of blue and black. Ambivert but prefers to be with his friends and not with a bunch of people he barely knows (unlike a certain prince)
Virgil: has boxes of Anxiety Objects. Such as, sketchbooks, origami, guitar, headphones, textbooks, fidget toys and a bunch of pillows and chargers (usually brings pets in with him). Wardrobe has a single suit and lots of comfy clothes (including some tops and hoodies from his online shop) almost everything is purple or black. Absolute introvert but he does like hanging out with his friends, no matter how tired he is afterwards
Janus: likes to lie to people online and will often get into arguments over his invented opinions. Wardrobe has a fair mix of formal and informal clothes but they all follow a yellow/black colour scheme. Ambivert but hates a lot of people so usually hangs with Remus but slowly becoming friends with the rest
Remus: horrible habits, barely showers, prides himself of being a Trash Boi, likes to annoy his friends and brother, likes the surprised and shocked reviews on his stories and fanfic. Is starting to write a book to scar even more people. Wardrobe is a bunch of stuff from Virgil (and his) shop, NSFW clothes, formal suits and a bunch of Halloween costumes, all mainly green or black . Extrovert except in a very bad way that ends hanging out with Janus
Fandom: Sanders Sides, medieval-ish au
Pairing: Logan/Remus, everyone else is platonic
Characters: Virgil, Patton, Roman, Logan, Remus, Deceit and Orange are mentioned
Warnings: There is betrayal in this, check the end of the tags for who.
Summary: When a magical illness overtakes the land, King Thomas calls a quest for the flower that will cure it. No one is expecting The Boy of Fear to show up.
Fear isn't expecting to enjoy the quest.

--
Rare was a True Mage, even in so grand a kingdom as that of King Thomas Sanders. In fact, in all the land only six were known.  One barely.  But of the ones known, they were well known.
Some were known for the fear they encouraged: The Unnamed One, who it's said can convince even the animals to do his bidding. The Boy of Fear, whose tantrums brought dreadful and terrifying storms.  Remus of the Forest, who would bring about a most gruesome death on any who stumbled through his forest.
But then there were those mages known for their great deeds: Lord Logan, the royal advisor who took council with the wind itself. All have heard his tale - how he used the winds to bolt over the castle walls and warn the thing of a coming invasion. Then there was Patton the Kind, a simple palace cook before he stepped in during rocky peace negotiations.  His powers to feel the earth have always helped him ground others, or so he says. Last but never least was Sir Roman, a noble Knight and local heartthrob who controlled fire as effortlessly as he controlled his sword.
There were rumors that a seventh mage that roamed the lands, one more terrifying than the Unnamed, the Boy of Fear, and Remus combined. None had ever seen traces of this rumored Mage, but that did not stop the people from whispering.
When an unknown illness began to sweep the lands - a fever so hot it seemed to boil people alive in no time at all - it was this rumoured mage that was first to be blamed. Though King Thomas tried to subdue thoughts of a hidden Mage, he couldn't pretend the sickness wasn't magical in origin.  Especially not after Lord Logan suggest the calling of a Quest to stop it.
"We need to find a Storm Flower. Specifically, a seven petaled Storm Flower." He informed King Thomas.  "The winds have informed me that one resides on the Lost Isles. Which I will be able to find with their guidance." Â
"Alright.â King Thomas, who had long given up on Logan ever talking to him casually, nodded. "I'll call a Quest at once."
"Why does the King insist on calling a Quest every time something happens?" Roman huffed a few days later, impatiently watching the sun for the moment the calling would be over and the Quest could begin. "Everyone knows we are the only ones that respond."
"That may be true," there was no 'may' about Patton's statement. The last time a non-mage had responded to a Quest had been before the Mages had been found. "But everyone deserves an equal chance to get involved.  We can't hog all the Kingdoms glory for ourselves. That just wouldn't be very fair, now wouldn't?"
"Besides, it is important to respect tradition."Â Logan added.
"So, is this the Quest meeting then or just a geek hang out?"
All three Mages turned at the unfamiliar voice to find a gothic young man smirking at them. His almost-black hair covered one eye but the other was purple.  More importantly, it was glowing with magic.
"Who let you in here!?" Roman demanded, sword already drawn and raised. The Boy of Fear didn't seem bothered.
"The guards just had to let me through after l told them I was here for the Quest."Â He said, still smirking. Â For a moment the three mages were silent as they took the information in.
"He is correct," Logan eventually said. "He has never technically committed a crime and so he has every right to join the Quest. We can not deny him.
"Don't you just love technicalities?"Â Fear grinned.
"No."Â Roman huffed, putting his sword away but crossing his arms to keep showing his displeasure.
"You're here to help?"Â Patton asked, looking unsure but not outright hostile.Â
"Why else would l be here?"Â Fear shrugged.
"Why would you be here?"Â Roman huffed.
"I must admit, I'm also curious as to your motives.â Logan said.
"Do l have to have a motive to want to stop this? Maybe I just don't want to catch this thing."  Fear answered. Â
"That is rather sound reasoning."Â Logan accepted.
"Besides, l highly suspect you'll need help with that boat."Â Fear added.
"But I thought you made storms? Won't that make sailing harder?"  Patton questioned, tone surprising polite.
"I can do a lot more than make storms." Fear said.  He held out his hands and the mages watched their surroundings as his eyes glowed brighter. It didn't take long to spot the way the well water was hovering three feet above the well.
"Cool!"Â Patton breathed as Fear let the water drop into the well once more, not a single drop missing it's mark.
"That settles that then." Logan decided.  Despite Romans grumbling, when the sun marked the tenth hour, Fear left with them. Although he did not tell them his name.
- - -
The boat was a decent size, small enough for four mages to run it alone but large enough to be comfortable. Large enough they didnât have to interact out side of necessity.  And for the first week of their travel, thatâs what Fear did. He keep to himself and keep out of the way, only talking with Logan when a course correction was needed or the seas seemed to be getting too frisky. Logan was unbothered by this arrangement and Roman seemed to prefer it but PattonâŚ
Well, it just seemed wrong to him. Â
Sure, everyone said Fear was this horrifying mage that didnât care about others but Patton just couldnât believe that. Over the past week Fear hadnât done anything mean, let alone evil. And besides, how bad could he really be? He was helping them after all.
If anything, Patton thought the mage seemed⌠lonely. And Patton just wasnât going to stand for that.
Thankfully, though the boat was big enough to give everyone space, it wasnât big enough for anyone to hide. Which made it easy for Patton to find Fear laying on the crows nest in the middle of the night.
âHey kiddo!â He greeted, grinning and trying not to laugh when Fear startled. It was funny but thatâd be rude. Â
âUh, did you need something?â Fear asked, quickly recovering and pulling himself into a sitting position.
âNope!â Patton said. âI was just wondering if you wanted a midnight snack?â
âUh, what?â Fear frowned, confused even after Patton showed off the cookies heâd hidden behind his back. âHow⌠how do you have cookies?â
âWell, a quest just isnât a quest without freshly baked cookies.â Patton claimed, pulling himself onto the crows nest proper and placing the cookies between them.
âBut, weâre on a boat?â Fear questioned further.
âWell, I am still the royal chef. Itâs not the first time Iâve had to make cookies on a boat.â Patton explained.  âKing Thomas likes his cookies.  Try one!â
âRight, um, thanks?â Fear said.Â
âThe first cookie of friendship.â Patton whispered as Fear took his first bite, almost making the mage choke as he laughed in surprise. Â
Little did Patton know how right he was.
--
With Patton dragging him by the arm, Fearâs time alone dropped dramaticly. As much as Fear grumbled it was, admittedly, nice.  Logan and he had fun debates and conversations, no longer just discussing the tides and the quickest way to the island. Patton insisted he joined âfamily game nightsâ and even let him help with the cooking.  Even Roman seemed to warm up to him, although to a considerably lesser extent.
Fear wasnât really sure what to do with all this sudden kindness.
When heâd joined the quest heâd been prepared to keep his word and then disappear back into the shadows. Now he wasnât⌠now he wasnât so sure.
âAre you alright?â Roman asked.  Heâd taken the spot to Fearâs left, although Fear couldnât figure out when heâd gotten there. âYou look darker and stormer than usual.â
âIâm fine.â Fear claimed.
âYou arenât losing your nerve, are you?â Roman questioned.
âOf course not.â Fear said, shouting the fire mage a glare. âIâm not like that.â
âAlright then.â Roman accepted, shrugging. âCaptain Nerd says we should all get some rest, weâll reach the island tomorrow.â
âNight then.â Fear said, leaving the boats side and the swirling waters behind. He wasnât losing his nerve.
--
The boat was large enough for everyone to have their own space, their campsites were not. It was in their best interests to keep their presence small, or so said Logan.  Two tents and a campfire, occasionally with a third location for keeping watch. Usually this lack of personal space would leave Fear itching and the clouds above him stormy.
Sitting with the mages, Fear found he actually liked it. Â
âYou are exgradating.â Logan huffed, his cheeks a little flush while he tried desperately to keep his composure. âIt was not this dramatic.â
âOh it was incredibly dramatic.â Roman grinned.  âYou should have seen the Kingâs face Fear, he was so confused.â
âAnd Logan just keep talking!â Patton added.  âKing Thomas had to clear his throat to get his attention so he could point it out.â
âRoyal Advisor Logan, we canât give the Queen an inifinestal amount of support. That would be an insult.â  Roman said, giving his best King Thomas impression.  Loganâs cheeks got darker.
âIt was a simple mistake.â He muttered.
âDoesnât the wind tell you everything? Why didnât it warn you?â  Fear asked, fighting back his own laughter.
âThe wind is a rather personal element.â Logan huffed.  âIt likes to laugh.  Especially at me.â
âWhich often means a random breeze knocking a basket onto his head.â Patton explained.
âYou certainly never help by putting baskets all over the castle.â Logan complained.
âI donât do that, you canât prove it.â Patton claimed.  Considering the grin on his face, Fear wasnât inclined to believe him. Â
âIâve seen you do it.â Logan argued.
âI think the entire castle has seen you do it.â Roman added.
âAnd the wind just knocks those over for you?â Fear asked.  âI thought you were an Earth mage.â
âItâs not magic. Patton and the wind are rather alike, they seem to get on despite literally being incapable of talking.â Logan explained.
âI wish I got along with the wind. Maybe then it would stop messing with my hair.â Roman pouted.
âThe earth is nothing like the wind. Itâs much more grounding and serious.â Patton said, pulling a serious face that looked anything but. âItâs actually a lot like you, Logan.â
âMy fire is exactly like me. Incredibly passionate and enchanting.â Roman claimed.
âAnd destructive.â Fear said, getting a âhey!â and a friendly shove in response. âI donât think the water and I are alike.  The waterâs a lot calmer than I am.â
âYour storms are anything but calm.â Roman argued.
âStorms are different.â Fear shrugged.  âAnd those are accidental.â He admitted, more quiet.
âAccidental?â Logan asked.  âThatâs odd. I donât think Iâve used my magic accidentally.â
âI have.â Patton said. âSometimes itâs just instinct and emotion, you know?â Fear and Roman both nodded but Logan couldnât seem to relate.
âFascinating.â He decided.  âI have never had the wind react to my emotions. We will have to discuss this at a later date so I can collect accurate data.â Â
âNerd.â Roman said, only half hidden in coughs.
âPrecise and well-studied are better labels.â Logan claimed, though he seemed rather unbothered by the teasing. He was likely used to it. Â
The group of them talked for a little longer before Patton stood with a yawn.
âI think itâs bedtime.â He decided.  âWhoâs taking first watch?â
âI will.â Fear offered. âIâm not tired.â
âAlright.â Logan stood as well. âI will take the second watch.â
âI suppose I will take the last watch, the sunrise is good for skin complexion.â Roman decided.
âSounds like I have the third watch then.â Patton nodded.
âI will time my watch to ensure you get the most efficient sleep.â Logan assured. Â
âAw, Lo.â Patton grinned. He yawned again then moved around the group, giving each of the mages a tight hug and a personal goodnight, like he always did. Rather than use the nickname Fear had gained, Patton just called him kiddo.  Â
âGoodnight. Sleep well.â  Logan said, after enduring the hug. Â
âPleasant dreams.â Roman said, waving.  Patton gave yet another goodnight before heading towards his tent. Watching them, Fear felt anxiety bubbling in his chest.  Was he really⌠sure he wasnât actually considering this⌠but then they had been so nice and didnât they deserve to know?
Clearing his throat, Fear didnât look up to see if theyâd noticed.
âVirgil.â He said.  At Pattonâs âhuhâ, Virgil did look up. All three had turned back to look at him, with Patton and Roman looking notably confused. Oh geez.  Why did he think this was a good idea?  âMy uh, my name.  Itâs Virgil.â  He managed after a moment, eyes darting around. Virgil waited anxiously for their response, not quite sure what to expect but not expecting anything good.
Patton broke the silence by squealing.
âI love it!!â He announced, running back to hug Virgil again.
âItâs not that big a deal Patton.â Virgil claimed, rolling his eyes fondly and hugging back.
âIt clearly is.â Logan said, fixing his glasses. âThank you for trusting us with your name, Virgil.â Â
âI must admit Iâm rather surprised.â Roman said.  âBut, it is nice to meet you Virgil.â
âNow, we really must be heading to bed.â Logan pointed out.
âRight, right. Iâm just so happy to finally know your name!â Patton said, still grinning.Â
âYouâll still know it tomorrow.â Virgil pointed out, smiling back.
âI will!â Patton agreed.
âOf course?â Logan whispered to himself, confused. âWas that in doubt?â
âGoodnight Virgil!â Patton said, finally letting the water mage.
âGoodnight Patton.â
--
Two weeks since Virgil stepped into the royal courtyard, they find it. Â
âCould nature be more dramatic?â Virgil asked as they stepped into the colouring. The Storm Flower, with itâs seven petals all in different colours, was in the exact center of the clearing. It rested atop a small hill, rays of the setting sun falling across it artfully.  Thereâs even a lake nearby with a small water, giving the clearing a calming soundtrack.Â
This was definitely a magical flower, Virgil decided, only a magical flower would be ridiculous.
âIs there only one?â Patton asked, starting towards the flower.
âWe will only need the one.â Logan assured, following Patton. Likely to ensure he didnât pick the flower it the wrong way. âThe illness is a magical curse, likely placed on an item special to the King or the Kingdom. When we get home weâll find the item, and then create a tea using the Storm Flower.  Once the item has been soaked in the tea, the curse will be broken.â
âAlright then!â Roman grinned.
Virgil was expecting it, waiting for it.
He still almost missed it.
Romanâs hand twitched out the corner of his eye and Virgil grabbed for the lake. The fire whirling ahead sizzled as it met a wall of water.
âWhat was that?â Logan asked, turning at the noise. âSteam?â  He added, confused when he spotted the cloud resting there.Â
âAre you two fighting?â Patton asked, frowning and putting his hands on his hips.
âI think we might just be.â Roman said, eyes narrowed as Virgil stepped between him and the others. âBreaking your word there Virgil?  I thought you were better than that.â
âYou broke yours first.ââ Virgil claimed.  âJust walk away.â
âWhat are you two talking about?â Patton asked. Â
âDonât worry about it padre, Iâm sure even youâll figure it out in a moment.â Roman assured.  Virgil tensed when the mageâs fingers twitched but he no fire came. Â
And then he felt heat and a rush of wind on his back. Â
Looking over, he found Logan fixing up his clothes. âI see.â  He said.  âAlthough I canât say I understand.â
âOf course you canât.â Roman spat.  He gave up on subtly then. He called fire to both his arms and blasted it at them. Virgil called on the lake but knew there wasnât enough water to block it. Thankfully, the earth that rose was more than enough to shield them.
âRoman?â Patton whispered, staring at the dirt.Â
âWe need to go.â Virgil said.  âRight now.â
âWhat? No, no we need to help him!  Something has to have happened to him!â Patton argued. Â
âNothingâs happened to me.â Roman huffed.  He stood atop the dirt pile, having used his fire to jump to the top. âNot like you two.  No, youâve saved the kingdom.  Everyone sings ballads of you.  I am down being a side character!â He called fire to rain down on them but Virgil jumped out of the way, taking Patton with him.  The earth mage was too shellshocked to respond, not like Logan.
âI see.â The wind mage said. âYou believe you have not achieved a grand enough fet, and so you plan to return alone with the Storm Flower to get sole credit. Likely, you also found a way to create the illness.â
âWhat gave you that impression genius?â Roman asked, rolling his eyes and jumping back to the ground.Â
âWell it is a fever based illness, and many have described the illness as being alike to burning alive. In retrospect, it makes the most amount of sense for it to be you.â  Logan explained.
âI was being sarcastic four eyes!â Roman snapped.
âOh, I see.âÂ
âLess exposition, more running away!â Virgil shouted, grabbing Logan and Pattonâs wrists and running towards the forest. Get stressed, he ordered himself and then almost laughed. He was already well stressed.  Thatâs not what called the clouds. Think of something else.
âRunning away again Virgil? I should have known youâd chicken out.â Roman mocked.  Ah, yeah, think of that.  Virgil let go of Loganâs wrist to flip off Roman while above him the clouds gathered.
âThis canât be right.â Patton mumbled, stumbling as they ran. The downpour began in earnest behind them.
âYou think a little rain is going to stop me?â Roman called away them.  He was chasing them, footsteps heavy against the forest floor.
âPatton, I need you to make it muddy behind us. And Logan I need you to push the rain Romanâs way.â Virgil ordered.
âExcellent plan.â Logan agreed.  Virgil couldnât feel the wind but he could feel the rain as it focused on Roman, making it hard for him too see and impossible for a fire to catch.
âPatton, mud!â
âBut this isnât, this canât be happening.â Patton mumbled.
âJust do it!â Virgil tried.Â
âPatton, worry about that later. Right now we have to focus on getting away.â Logan said, tone much calmer than Virgils.  After a moment Patton hesitantly nodded.
âAlright.â He said, sounding a little more sure as he pulled out of Virgilâs grip. âFollow me, I can find us a cave.âÂ
--
They made it safely to the cave, no hint of Roman following behind them. Patton closed the entrance behind them, leaving only a sliver of an entrance to allow air and moonlight in. They couldnât risk starting a fire.
âI believe we are safe.â Logan announced after about ten minutes.Â
âFor now.â Virgil agreed. Â
âI believe you owe us an explanation.â Loganâs words made Virgil tense.  âIt appears to me you knew what Roman was planning.â
âSurely he wasnât planning it.â Patton argued.  âHe canât have, something just⌠something happened! Heâs being controlled or manipulated or,â Virgil cut him off before he could continue.
âRomanâs been planning this for months.â He admitted.
âWhat?â Patton whispered, falling back into the cave wall and falling slowly to the ground. âThatâs notâŚâ
âIâm sorry Patton.â Virgil said. Â
âBut Roman cares so much about the kingdom!â Patton argued.  âHeâs our friend!â
âThatâs not what he told us.â Virgil mumbled.
âUs?â Logan asked, raising an eyebrow. With a sigh, Virgil sat as well.
âYou know that Roman and Remus are twins, right?â He asked.
âThe forest mage?â Patton clarified.
âOf course. Roman disowned him when Remus joined the Unnamed One.â Logan recalled.
âThatâs not entirely true.â Virgil said.  âIâm not really sure how to explain this.â He added, running a hand through his hair.  They were silent a moment then Patton took a steadying breath and sat up a little straighter.
âStart from the beginning.â He said.  âAs far back as you need to go. I want to understand.â  Hesitating only a moment, Virgil nodded.
âWhen my powers first came in I couldnât control them. I made a lot of damage, my parents kicked me out.â  He admitted, rushing through it and ignoring Pattonâs noise of distress. He tried to say something else but nothing came out, with an annoyed expression he tried again.  âOrange, the seventh mage, found me. He took me in and D- uh, the Unnamed One.  He raised us, more or less.  Told us that the kingdom hated mages, that the King used them for soldiers and any that werenât loyal to him were killed.â
âBut thatâs not true.â Logan frowned.  âKing Thomas is incredibly welcoming of mages.â
âYeah, well, we didnât know that.â Virgil shrugged.  âAnd the childhood we had, we believed it. ThenâŚâ  He paused again.  âThen Roman and Remus showed up.  Said they were runaways.â
âRoman too?â Patton asked, frowning deeper when Virgil nodded.
âOrange took them in and Roman confirmed everything he said. Going on about how the kingdom was horrible to mages.  After a while Orange started talking about⌠changing things. Taking over, making the kingdom a better place.  Roman was⌠he was really into it.  He went back to be a man on the inside, I guess.â
âThat must have been when he returned from âsearching for Remusâ.â Logan pieced together.
âWhenever he got back he and Orange would get worse. They just kept going on about how horrible the kingdom was, and how the King would kill us and every magic user if he got the chance.â
âThomas would never!â Patton shouted.
âRoman was very convincing.â Virgil sighed.  âMore convincing than Orange. I never really wanted to do Orangeâs take over the world thing, but Roman⌠he made it sound like his life in the kingdom was so horrible. That the both of you were horrible.  So, when he said he had a plan to make everything betterâŚâ  Virgil trailed off.
âThe illness.â Logan guessed.
âYou were planning onâŚ?â Patton didnât finish the sentence.
âI didnât know the specifics.â Virgil claimed.  âI just knew heâd call a quest and I had to be there to help, or be the scapegoat I guess.â
âWhen did you decided to betray him?â Logan asked.  Virgil couldnât help but wince at the choose of words.
âWhen Patton gave me cookies, I guess.â Virgil said.  âAt first I thought maybe you were just acting, that any second youâd turn into the cold hearted monsters Roman described but it didnât take long to realize you werenât. I mean, no one can be that earnest, right?â Â
âHe said we were monsters?â Patton repeated, looking heartbroken.
âYeah, he uh⌠he had some pretty extreme stories.â Virgil admitted.  âIâm sorry.  I never should have agreed.â
âUltimately Iâm glad you were there.â Logan said.  âI never suspected a thing. Roman could easily have killed us there and no one would ever figure it out.â
âDo you really think he could have done that?â Patton asked.
âAfter today, yes. I do.â  Logan said.  âAnd since we donât seem to know him at all, Virgil what do you think heâll do now?â Â
âWell, heâll want to get rid of us. But if he canât find us he might try to get to the kingdom first. He could leave us stranded or, if that doesnât work, heâll still have enough time to make up a story thatâll make it seem like weâre in the wrong.â Virgil guessed. Â
âI see. Then itâs likely in our best interest to ensure Roman does not leave the forest.â Logan decided.
âHow are we meant to do that?â Patton asked.  For a moment it seemed none of them had any ideas, then Virgil jumped up.
âRemus.â He said.  âPatton, open the cave.â
âWhat?â Patton frowned.Â
âWhat are you planning?â Logan asked.
âRemus might help us. He can keep Roman trapped in the forest easily.â Virgil explained.
âRemus?â Patton frowned. âIs he on our side?â
âHeâs on his own side.â Virgil said, shaking his head. âBut he loves messing with Roman.â
âBut I thought he was a criminal.â Patton said.
âNot technically.â Logan said.  âReports about his murders are greatly exaggerated, mostly he just gets people lost or helps them get away. The few deaths Iâve been able to confirm as his have been condemned or would-be-condemned criminals.  Which, under some rather old laws, is technically legal.â
âI didnât know you knew so much about Remus.â Patton frowned.  âHas everyone been lying to me?â
âItâs not like that.â Logan tried to assure.  âI just wasnât sure how to bring it up. Iâm still not sure itâs a good idea to ask his help.â
âI think it might be our only idea.â Virgil argued.  âPatton?â
â...Alright.â Patton accepted. With a heavy movement of his hands, the cave unsealed. Virgil stepped out and immediately began knocking on a tree.
âRemus!â He shouted for the man a few times, occasionally changing the tree he was banging on. Patton and Logan watched, both confused..  âCome out already.â  Virgil eventually growled.
âIâm gay.â A man announced, stepping out from behind a tree. The man was the spitting image of Roman, except for the part where he was a mess. Covered in mud, with leaves in his hair, and⌠was that moss growing on his legs?
âHow did you do that?â Patton frowned.
âOh, you have friends!â Remus grinned as he spotted the two. âIâm so proud of you Virgil.  You even meet the cute one!â Â
âHello Remus.â Logan nodded.  âI wasnât aware you could teleport.âÂ
âOnly in a very specific way.â Remus claimed.  âWe can get real deep into it later.â He added, winking.Â
âOrange is going to be real pissed if he hears you were flirting with a kingdom mage.â Virgil commented, shaking his head in shook.  Remus wasnât a subtle person, how had none of them noticed this?
âHeâs going to be all the more pissed when he hears you betrayed Roman.â Remus countered.  âFinally stepping out of your comfort storm.  Very impressive. Although possibly deadly, I can feel Roman burning trees from here.â Â
âHeâs close?!â Patton asked, panicked.
âI didnât say that.â Remus assured.  âI did say heâll burn you to a crisp when he finds you though! Wait, did I say that?  I meant to.â  Patton whimpered, whether from fear or heartbreak Virgil wasnât sure. Maybe it was both.
âWe were actually hoping for your help with that.â Virgil said.  âRoman canât exactly burn us alive if heâs trapped in the forest and we arenât, right?â
âYou want me to betray Orange and my brother like that?â Remus gasped.
âPlease?â Virgil tried.
âHmmm, only if Logan asks.â Remus decided, turning to the wind mage in question.
âRemus.â Logan said, rolling his eyes.
âOh Iâm teasing.â Remus assured, clicking his fingers. âIâll do it.  Do put in a good word for me when you get home, will you? Oh and remember my parents face when they find out I was the not-evil twin. I want to hear every detail.â
âWait, we canât leave yet.â Patton said suddenly.  âThe flower!â Â
âMy flowers are solely for Logan these days, sorry.â Remus said.
âNo, the Storm Flower.â Logan recalled as well.  âWe canât fix the curse if we donât get it.â
âRoman will kill us if we stick around.â Virgil argued.
âYou can leave if youâd like Virgil, but plenty more people will die if we donât get that flower.â Logan argued. Â
âWell, heâs got you there.â Remus hummed, leaning on Virgilâs shoulder right until the other mage shoved him off.
âHow are we meant to get it? There was only one and Roman probably grabbed it!â Virgil pointed out.
âIf he did weâll⌠weâll have to take it off him. However we can.â  Patton decided, voice growing from a mumble.
âPatton, are you sure?â Logan checked, concerned for his friend.
âThe Roman I knew was a lie. This person⌠he, he hurts people. We have to stop him.â  Patton confirmed, nodding.
âOh what an adventure!â Remus grinned.  âI should have brought treats.â
âThis is a suicide quest.â Virgil muttered.
âThereâs no shame if you donât want to come Virgil.â Patton assured.  âThank you for your help already.â
âNo, no. Iâm coming.â Virgil sighed. âIâd feel guilty if I didnât.â
âThen itâs settled, in the morning weâll all go after Roman. For now I suggest we sleep.  If weâre lucky, Roman will spend all night searching and be worn out when we find him.â Logan said.
âSleepover!â Remus cheered. He was about the only one that felt like cheering as they walked back into the cave. There was an unease in the stomach of the other mages, even Logan who tried to appear calm as they settled in. Â
Tomorrow they would need to fight a friend, there was no way to feel good about that.
