#creative routine

I did a rough sketch of what’s inside my backpack.

In my backpack, I always have an iPad, a toothbrush, a bottle of sparkling water, earphones, a portable charger, a wallet, one book, and some protein snacks.

Especially the iPad—it’s a must-have for me. I draw during little spare moments, and that’s how I build up a stock of various illustrations! Haha.

Also, using a PC feels heavy for me, so with an iPad, everything is much simpler and self-contained. I really love it!

What do you keep in your backpack?

One thing I’ve been doing every single day without fail:

Drawing 100 circles, ovals, squares, rectangles, triangles, and other basic shapes before and after every practice session.

It’s not flashy. It’s not exciting. But it works.

Doing this at the start helps me loosen up, get focused, and reset my brain for learning. Doing it again after drills helps me reinforce control and end the session with clarity.

There’s something calming about it too just me, the sketchbook, and simple shapes over and over.

Repetition builds rhythm. Rhythm builds control.

I’ll take small, steady progress over burnout any day.

People often ask me how I write with no other deadline than the drive to create. The answer is: A ROUTINE. I do often wish that I were some romantic poet who could stroll through the countryside and sit upon a tree stump to compose my masterpiece at the moment of inspiration. But here we are.

Getting yourself into a creative routine is the best way that I know of working professionally as an artist, because it gets the job done. It’s practical and demystifying. In my experience, those who write only when the stars align find themselves left behind as their peers secure growing opportunities. Waiting for inspiration to strike while you scroll Facebook and binge Netflix is a fools errand (believe me I’ve tried).

Stephen King started writing in the morning and kept going till he hit 10 pages. He would also walk 4 miles every day. I am not quite this rigorous yet, but I thought it might be useful for me to share my own routine, for anyone looking to design their own.

7:00am - Wake up

7:15 - Walk or exercise

7:45- Yoga

8:00 - Shower and breakfast

9:00 - Journal

9:30 - WRITE

12:30pm - Lunch

1:00 - Keep writing

3:30 - Nap or errands

Obviously this doesn’t happen everyday. Sometimes things come up. Often I sleep in. At the moment I’m working on my thesis which is sucking up a lot of the writing time. But the routine works as an anchor, something to stop me drifting away on an inky blue social media sea for hours. It’s always there to remind you how you could be spending your time. And honestly, I’m hoping that posting it publicly will remind me to follow it.

☕️ when i start making things, i usually want caffeine, playlists, and a reason to disappear from life issues for a while. ☕️ i always know where the string and scissors are, and diversify needle locales. ☕️ the sound or background noise that instantly locks me into focus when i’m working is either music or a long tv show. ☕️ before i start creating, i make playlists, crack open a fresh rockstar, click on a newly charged headlamp, and get a lot of kandi bracelets done. 💖☕️💖☕️💖
