Could technology help find middle ground for abortion?
This is going to be a long one, sorry.
Preface: this is meant as a respectful philosophical/theoretical discussion, and I realize this is a very controversial topic. I will do my best to be respectful of all views, and realize that I may inadvertently offend some or all of you. This is not my intention, and I ask that those responding would please attempt to be respectful to all those engaged in the discussion.
Now to the thought process What do pro-life and pro-choice people really want? and what is it that they don’t want? If I am wrong, please respectfully inform me of my error, and I will try to rectify it.
1. I do not believe that most pro-choice people want to murder children.
2. I do believe that pro-choice people want to be able to protect themselves from judgement, harassment, embarrassment, or failure to live up to the commitments they have already made.
1. I do not believe that pro-life people want to make anyone miserable, humiliate people, or hurt people.
2. I do believe that pro-life people want to save lives
There are protesters who I cannot vouch for, who do abusive and cruel things on both sides of the issue. I cannot speak for them, and have difficulty understanding them. I do not condone the abuse and threats that have happened and will happen.
Assuming the above to be true, and assuming we had the power to create a safe technological opportunity, consider the following theory.
The point for debate: As an alternative to abortion, the fetus could be removed and placed in an artificial womb, born from there, then be raised by other parents.
Yes, the adoption system would have to be improved, and maybe abortions are still available in this hypothetical scenario. The cost of the surgery to remove the fetus, and maintain the artificial womb would need to be less than or equal to the cost of an abortion, and there would need to be an improvement in technology and somehow we would need to find a way to ethically develop said technology. I am unsure of what rights the original mother would have, and there are other issues as well, but Assuming these problems could be fixed, Is this something that should be explored? is this a legitimate compromise? I realize that it is not a perfect solution. What do you think?
