Why donât they call Doctor/Clara âCloctorâ? That would be an amazing name and it actually has the characters names in it and not the actors ones. I mean Whouffaldi is okay I suppose but do I really want to read about Peter Capaldi fucking a souffle?

Iâve just posted my fourth Doctor Who fanfic story to Archive of Our Own. âThe Farewell Tourâ is not set in the continuity of the other stories. Itâs another post-Hell Bent reunion scenario, but I hope with a twist. Itâs also nowhere near as dark as my previous story.
The Farewell Tour: http://archiveofourown.org/works/6907858

You know youâre deep in Whouffaldi when you suddenly remember that there once actually was a time, not that long ago, when you had no problem at all with the idea of Clara romancing Danny Pink instead of the Doctor. For me that was the case early in Series 8, and I found the jealousy the Doctor showed in Time Heist and The Caretaker to be interesting and unexpected but I was still OK with Danny/Clara ... until we got to Mummy on the Orient Express. Then I saw how fantastic a couple Twelve and Clara truly were, and Danny, while still a neat character, really became someone I wanted to see more or less go away because I just wanted Twelve and Clara by themselves. This was a full year before I saw the convention videos in which Jenna confirmed that the âI love youâ Clara utters at the end of MOTOE was actually addressed at the Doctor (and watching the episode after seeing this, itâs clear this isnât just Jenna making stuff up - the director had to be in on it as well). For me, after that point it was Whouffaldi all the way and a direct continuation of Whouffle (which Deep Breath, of course, rendered fully canon with the Doctorâs comment about Eleven believing himself to be Claraâs boyfriend. There may still be wiggle room to deny Whouffaldi if someone really works at it, but no wiggle room exists for Whouffle because itâs said in dialogue, with subtitles on the DVD, and dubbed into whatever languages the show airs in).
Of course, Danny played an important role: he provided us with the trigger for the amazing Series 8 finale, and for Whouffaldi the opportunity for the Doctor to utter one of his fantastic (and confirmed by Moffat) euphemisms for âI love youâ. So Iâm glad we had him. But at the same time ... I honestly canât remember when I was totally OK with Danny/Clara and I know I was!
Whouffaldi rewires your synapses. Earworm, indeed.
This post contains spoilers for The Force Awakens. If youâre one of the 5 people who have yet to see it, you might want to skip this one.
I was just rewatching Force Awakens and within that film we see two acknowledged romances take place: the new one between Rey and Finn and the coda of one of the greatest romances in modern Sci-Fi, Han and Leia.
Whatâs interesting is the similarities between what we see on screen and what we see in Doctor Who between the Doctor and Clara.
Finn/Rey: the two bond through shared, life-endangering experiences, becoming fast friends, hugging a lot and by the end itâs made clear that Finn has fallen in love with her, to the extent where he risks the safety of the galaxy in a foolhardy gambit to save her life. Sound familiar? And at the end, as Finn lies injured and unconscious, we see that Rey shares those feelings (an argument can be made that Clara might not have realized the true depth of her feelings for the Doctor until fairly late in the game, maybe even as late as the Cloisters), but the two are forced to part because she has to answer a higher calling. (With the movie leaving us with the promise of a reunion in Episode VIII.)
Han/Leia: another relationship forged through shared adventure, despite initial friction and the two insulting each other at every turn (sound familiar?) but this time we see it decades down the line, after a long period in which Han has forced himself out of Leiaâs life. Almost like he had to undergo a memory wipe. Years later, they reunite, but only briefly. A lot of people, me included, are assuming that we will see Clara at least one more time, in Capaldiâs regeneration episode. Sadly, Han had no regeneration option, but the hope is Twelve and Clara will reunite one more time before Twelve âdiesâ.
Other similarities: the hand-holding between Finn and Rey was one thing I found interesting. True, she complained about it, but still, itâs there during a sequence that was only missing the words âWhen I say run, run!â and âI will hold Finnâs hand, but thatâs it.â. And there are no big romantic snogs between either couple. Instead, they hug. They just hug. Again, sound familiar?
Oh, and regarding the speculation that there might also be something between Finn and Poe Dameron? I donât see it personally - theyâre good friends is the way it appears on screen. But even if there is something, thatâs fine because it provides another similarity - how is it any different from Clara boasting about snogging Jane Austen?

I just watched Nightmare in Silver for the first time in nearly 3 years. I wish I could say I have a better impression of it as a whole than I did back in 2013 when I called it the first episode in years that I actually hated, but while I donât hate the episode anymore (for reasons Iâll get into), it still has too many fatal flaws for me to consider it a good episode. But, looking back on it from a strictly Clara and Doctor perspective, this was a landmark episode in many ways. In terms of Claraâs character development it was the episode where she first acted in lieu of the Doctor and acted like the Doctor. Including a rather startling moment where she shrugs off the apparent death of someone named âMissyâ (I assume the name is a coincidence) to focus on the next step.
Then there was a moment where she was prepared to shoot two soldiers who had been semi-converted. I had forgotten this as I thought it was only when she commanded the UNIT snipers in Magicianâs Apprentice that she was prepared to make the hard call. That was actually quite startling.
In terms of the âCloctorâ relationship, there are a couple of smoking guns here that I donât see mentioned very often maybe because this episode isnât very highly regarded. For example, we have Mr. Cleverâs attempt at seducing Clara which nearly works, until Clara says (paraphrasing) âeven if those things were true, the Doctor would rather die than say them.â Which totally gives on-screen validation to all that stuff we heard Peter and Jenna say about the two not being willing to say certain things out loud. It was established as part of the character dynamic on screen three years ago. But we know the Doctor has the feelings because when they are alone, Mr Clever basically says so. And of course we have that infamous crack about Claraâs tight skirt at the end. Plus the Doctor does not look happy when Porridge proposes marriage to Clara.
And then thereâs this line when Mr. Clever remarks about the Doctorâs attempt (ongoing during Series 7) to erase himself from history: âYou know you could be reconstructed by the hole you've left.â Gee ... where have we heard that before?
I tell ya, someone should write a book about the complexities and callbacks of the Clara era. Theyâre quite remarkable. I only wish Nightmare in Silver was a better episode all-around. Warwick Davis was cool, it was incredible seeing Clara in command, and Iâve already mentioned the Whouffle stuff - and it was written by Neil Gaiman. Why didnât it work for me? A riddle for the ages, I guess...
(This post contains a major spoiler for the Marvelâs Agents of SHIELD episode, âThe Singularityâ that aired in North America on 26 April 2016. Spoilerphobes may wish to shield (sorry...) their eyes accordingly.)
This may not appear to be Doctor Who related at first, but it will become clear...
So it finally happened. Fitz and Simmons officially became a couple in last nightâs episode, âThe Singularityâ. With their longing looks, Fitzâs declaration of love two seasons back, Simmons pining for him on the desert planet, Fitz risking his life trying to get her back, and last episodeâs makeout session, apparently they werenât a real couple. Nope, according to the script - and I guess the fans who have been waiting for this - FitzSimmons officially became a couple because they finally had sex.
Iâve nothing against this turn of events in SHIELD - Iâve been rooting for FitzSimmons (a pair of characters who were given a shipping name in dialogue in their very first episode) since Day 1. The only thing I dislike is the fact so many people denied that they were an item prior to this - and the script for last nightâs episode pretty much says they didnât consider themselves a couple either - until they went to bed together. And Iâm reminded of how so many people continue to refuse to acknowledge that anything non-platonic existed between the Doctor and Clara, or Rose, or even River, because the show never put in a love scene. Now, with River I know sheâs made some risque comments here and there, but truth be told we donât know how much of that is real and how much is River just being River. But you can always say âwell they were married, so do the mathâ. Fair enough. But there is so much on-screen evidence that Ten and Rose were a couple and that Clara and the Doctor - both 11 and 12 - were a couple that you shouldnât need to indicate that theyâd gone to bed together to cement this.
Actually, truth be told, Clara and the Doctor had sex in every episode they were in (and Rose with Nine and Ten applies here too). Instead of rolling around in a bed, they were being chased by Daleks, thwarting Mire and Love Sprites, coming back breathless from an adventure involving sentient plants (Iâve said it before - look at the Doctorâs facial expression at the start of Face the Raven when Clara talks about jumping over the side. Heâs prowling. And look at how Clara gazes at the Doctor in the final scenes of Before the Flood - not to mention her body language with him in a number of scenes in both episodes, and the twoâs flirting in Sleep No More). Adventure was the Doctor and Claraâs lovemaking, and the Doctor and Roseâs - and I think the Doctor and Riverâs too. In real life there are couples who get more jollies out of bungee jumping and going on rafting adventures than going to bed with each other. And there are countless couples, deeply in love, who for religious and cultural reasons look at sex as a way to procreate and thatâs it - they enjoy each other in different ways. As do people for whom age or physical abilities become an issue.
Interestingly, SHIELD actually lampshades the attitude of âsex or it isnât realâ by having Mack tell Jemma that as far as heâs concerned, FitzSimmons are a couple, and this is well before âthe deed.â Itâs clear and obvious to him without the need for the two to go another step. It should be just as clear and obvious with the Doctor and Clara (and Rose, and River).

Clara's summer job hadn't been the most⊠interesting thing she'd ever done. Intern at a publishing house specializing in⊠fact checking of all things wasn't exactly where she saw herself working, not for four months on not even decent pay. But it was experience, and something for her resume in the end, and she didn't do much work.
Most of the time, Clara loved her boss. She worked hard for her, and did everything she was asked to do, but unfortunately it was usually really easy work. Her boss was really nice, but she hardly gave Clara any work to do, so Clara was left to her own devices on her laptop for half the day.
Sometimes she wrote, sometimes she read, but sometimes, she talked to her new friend, The Doctor.
Clara had been warned about people on the internet. She'd heard all the stories about girls getting "Catfished", people being stalked, and every other scary encounter that could possibly happen, but she had a great connection with John. The Doctor and the Impossible girl were virtually inseparable.
She'd always wanted to meet him. They made great internet friends, but they lived on opposite ends of the country, and with their schedules, they were never able to meet.
The summer dragged on, and Clara and John continued to talk. She'd show up exhausted to work, getting little sleep because they'd stay up all night talking, skyping, texting, laughing. He was the type of person who she was just comfortable around. She'd brought him out of his shell, but he'd open up to only her. He made her feel special and she made him feel at ease.
When school started again, Clara was relieved to be finished her job. She would put all her focus on her third year of university, promising to study and try new things, and that's how she found herself at a house party.
If she was being honest, she really didn't want to be there. One of her friends had dragged her out, telling her she needed a man ("A real man Clara, not some guy on the internet."), but Clara wasn't having it. She pulled out her phone to send him a text.
[ To: John ] Kill me, this night is awful.
John was a young, attractive man, he probably had plans of his own, and she didn't expect him to respond so soon.
[ To: Clara ] What's wrong, did something happen to you?
She smiled and texted him back; his concern was endearing.
[ To: John ] No, just an awful party.
[ To: Clara ] Looks like we're in the same boat then. Too many drunk people, not enough room. The Sherlock posters he's got are a nice touch though, at least the host has good taste in television.
Clara frowned and looked towards the next room. Sherlock posters?
[ To: John ] That's funny, the house I'm at has posters on the wall too.
There was a long response before she received another message.
[ To: Clara ] Clara, are you by any chance at Jack Harkness' house?
Her eyes went wide and she scanned the room. Clara's heart was pounding, because she was indeed at Jack's house.
[ To: John ] Yes⊠why?
[ To: Clara ] Look up.
She did, and saw the man she'd only ever seen on a screen, John Smith, standing across the room.
Immediately, Clara pushed through the crowd, and didn't even say anything before she wrapped her arms around him. John tensed at the unexpected contact, but settled into the hug and pulled her closer, nuzzling his face in her hair.
She pulled away after a moment, realizing she'd just attack-hugged her internet friend in the middle of a crowded house party. "Sorry, hi, I'm Clara, nice to meet you."
He chuckled, sending her heart into a frenzy and butterflies in her stomach. "I'm John. Wow, finally."
"Here we are."
"You're so beautiful." He blurted out. Clara could see his face heat up and giggled nervously. She never imagined them actually meeting, it was extremely surreal, having him there, and she couldn't quite process it.
"D'you wanna get out of here?" John frowned. "IâI mean, I was kind of forced into the party, maybe taking a walk might be more fun."
John nodded. "Okay." He pulled out his phone. "Sorry, let me just text Rory so he knows I left."
"Rory Williams?"
"Yeah, how'd you know?" He asked her, perplexed.
"His girlfriend Amy is the one who dragged me out tonight. Now come on, let's not waste another minute here."
Clara and John ended up at a little pub sharing a plate of chips. She felt awkward at first, sure, she knew John as well as she knew any of her other friends, but to suddenly be sitting across from him in a cozy corner booth was extremely different than their usual environment.
He couldn't stop looking at her. Clara was right there and he couldn't believe it. She was talking to him, and he couldn't tell you what she was saying, because he was just so focused on the fact that she was there.
"John?"
"Hm?" He turned to her, breaking him out of his thoughts.
"It's getting late, do you mind walking me home?"
He nodded and stood, leaving money on the table to cover the bill. As they headed towards Clara's residence, John shyly nudged her hand with his own, playing off how his heart sped up at the thought of walking her home, holding her hand as if they were⊠together or something.
Clara sensed that John was trying to do something, trying to ask something without having to physically ask her, so she did it for him. Slowly, as if she were trying not to frighten him, she took his hand, looking to him knowingly.
"Sorry." John apologized with embarrassment.
"It's okay." She replied with a shy smile. They walked in silence until they reached her door, and she turned to look at him. "Well, this is me."
"Yes, this is you, your place, Clara's home."
She giggled and reached up, kissing him on the cheek, making him go pink. "Goodnight John."
As Clara turned to unlock her door, he caught her by the hand and pulled her into him. He timidly leaned in, heart pounding in his chest, and kissed her slowly, only once, before pulling away.
"Goodnight Clara." He told her, backing away from the dazed woman's door.
Clara could only stand there completely and utterly shocked. As John neared the end of her street, she realized she'd stayed still the entire time, and fumbled with her keys. Her heart pounded while she struggled to unlock her door, and once she was in, she sank to the floor against the wall.
"I love him." She said aloud, disbelief colouring her voice. "Fuck, I actually love him."
