« All people who doesnāt see Jax as transfem are lacking media literacyĀ Ā»
This is a topic people have strong opinions about, but I'd appreciate people reading the whole post before responding
Hold my beer and watch thisš«µ
« Why it looks like you fight against transfem Jax being canon ? »
I got two asks asking that so iām going to respond here:
(That MY opinion as someone who see transfem Jax as not canon, that ok to disagree, that ok to see it as canon, but donāt be mean, I insulted anyone)
I'm not against transfem Jax as a headcanon. What I'm against is the way it's often treated as if it's undeniably canon and then used to shut down anyone who has a different interpretation
The biggest issue isn't the headcanon itself, it's that some people use it as an excuse to harass others. I've seen people reply with fan wiki pages, Gooseworx art, or comments from a VA and say, « See? Jax is transfem. You're transphobic if you disagree. » That's not a healthy way to engage with fandom.
As far as I'm aware, this wasn't established in the show itself. 3 years after it started, show ended, an illustration or out-of-show comment became something that many people now present as official canon, and that distinction often gets lost
The other thing people need to understand is that it's become incredibly difficult to find content about Jax that isn't centered on this one interpretation. Some people always say,  « Just block the tags» ,but that doesn't really solve the problem when so much Jax content is tagged normally or when this interpretation feels dominant in the whole character's fandom space including communities and fanfics. Wanting more variety doesn't mean I'm attacking anyone's headcanon.
Honestly, I genuinely miss what this fandom used to feel likeā¦For like three years, Jax was a character fans interpreted in dozens of different ways, and that diversity was one of my favorite things about being here, there wasn't only one one « correctĀ Ā» way to see Jax.. It made searching for fan content exciting because every artist and writer brought something unique⦠Now it feels like I mostly see the same interpretation over and over again, and feels like soooo much of that creativity and variety has been overshadowed. Feels like this has become so dominant that everything else gets pushed , and if you don't share it, you're treated like a problem, a transphobic I don't want anyone to stop enjoying transfem Jax, I just personally miss when there was room for every interpretation without people feeling like they had to defend why they saw the character differently.
I also miss when people didn't have to constantly defend or justify their pov about Jax just to be accepted in the fandom
I miss when fans could have different headcanons without arguments, harassment, or accusations. We didn't all have to agree, and that was okay
People should absolutely be free to enjoy transfem Jax. Other people should be just as free to enjoy different interpretations without being harassed or accused of bigotry over a fictional character.
And just to be clear, calling something a headcanon isn't dismissing it or saying it's « less valid » to enjoy. Headcanons are a huge part of fandom, and people should absolutely be free to imagine characters however they like, including as transfem of course The problem starts when a headcanon is presented as unquestionable canon or used to tell other fans that their interpretation is wrong or that they're a bad person for not sharing it. Different interpretations can coexist That's what makes fandom fun, and nobody should be pressured into accepting only one version of a character
I have mixed feels about transfem Jax. While I'm inclined to like the character more as a repressed transgirl (as a trans person!), I still don't actually like the fact that Jax is trans? It just doesn't feel like it suits Jax and gets rid of any character development that was there. I don't like how now it's seen as "Openly hate girly stuff cause people can't know I want to be a girl" , or the transmasc headcanon of "I hate girly stuff because I dont want to be a girl anymore". But also, isn't their character based on their mindfiles? If Jax always felt they were a girl ("I told her something personal to get her off my back") then why wasn't the avatar more feminine? Idk.
But also, having Jax stay as a Cis male leaves the story to be "I hate stereotypically feminine things because I've been taught my whole life that being feminine equals weakness, and weakness is bad. I can't be weak or vulnerable, because then people won't like it respect me."
This take is also reinforced by the way Jax treats Ragatha and Gangle. At present (we don't know much about pre-pomni, or even pre-ribbit abstraction, apart from what Ragatha has said) but Jax treats Ragatha and Gangle as almost lesser because he sees them as "weak" because they display emotions that he doesn't allow himself to display because he sees them as being almost... Beneath him?
When Pomni is casual with him, he likes her. When she gets vulnerableā "what would you do if I abstracted?"ā his pupils expand, which a lot of fans have pointed out as him "closing down", and he tells her he wouldn't care.
Again, transfem Jax answers some of these questions (femininity and trauma), but leaves others that really only traumatised, cis Jax would explain (vulnerability, why his avatar is male and why he's still male in the outside world, despite clearly having a support system and frequenting Zooble's queer-run bar.
TADC Episode 9 spoilers!!!
It really annoys me when people get mad and argue about the validity of Daisy, which as Iām sure you know, is what the fandom has named transfem Jax.
The thing is, nothingās confirmed. Itās all about interpretation. For an example, letās take this scene from episode 9;
Ribbit takes off her bow and places it on Jaxās/Daisyās head, to which he/she seems happy. This happens right after Jax/Daisy tells Ribbit about their relationship with their parents.
Now hereās where we run into a problem; Interpretation.
Hereās the Jax route.
Jax is happy because he sees Ribbit still trusts him, and doesnāt think of him as any less of a friend after what he told her. She promises to keep his secret.
Hereās the Daisy route.
Daisy is happy because the bow on her head makes her feel more feminine, validating her identity, which helps further her bond with Ribbit.
How is this a problem? Because thereās no dialogue after this interaction to confirm either side. I personally feel like both are valid, I can understand both sides, but to fight over it and call people transphobic just because they donāt agree? Itās just stupid. The way YOU interpret something doesnāt mean itās right. Again, I understand both points, I believe that both Jax and Daisy are valid characters, I like drawing both of them, and thereās no reason to fight.
I love Jax, and I love Daisy.
