A rant on chronic illness treatment
I gotta let it out, man. I've got IBD.
oooh I just hate when my disability is disabling
I really want to have sex, but I don't know how, and I'm queer, chronically ill and isolated.
Nurse, author and comic Kelli Dunham, answers a new advice ask today at Scarleteen: https://loom.ly/5-ybcE8
âLonging for intimacy is not just normal; itâs literally part of being human. We have an evolutionary-level need for other people in our life. Without this drive to connect with other people (sexually and otherwise) and to actually have sexâ , we wouldnât have continued as a species. These drives go deep!
In addition to our intense physical and emotional drives, we are continually steeping in a culture that rewards and is almost fixated on coupledom. Itâs not as simple as avoiding a rom-com, either. Iâve even said aloud in a movie theater, "Why is there a love story in the middle of this superhero movie!â
As you mentioned, social media dramatizes this fixation even more. The extreme engagement events (12 people and 12 dogs in tiny matching outfits doing a choreographed dance in front of a rainbow-colored champagne fountain or other such nonsense) are almost easier to ignore than those continual low-key celebrations of romanticâ love: âMy partnerâ brought me a popsicle because I had a sore throat. Best partner ever!â It can start to feel like everyone is in a relationshipâ , and everyoneâs relationship is fantastic. Of course, weâre just seeing the highlight reel, so itâs entirely possible â and probably likely â that the relationship we see reflected on social media isnât quite that amazing. And, just so you know, according to 2020 research from the Pew Foundation, of the lesbianâ , gayâ , or bisexualâ people they surveyed, 47 percent said they were single.
I know statistics arenât necessarily consoling, especially in manners of the heart, but I mention this here because sometimes when we really want something (like intimacy, as youâve described) and are not able to get it, we start to wonder if something is wrong with us for wanting it, or if the wanting itself is the problem. Neither are usually true.â
the pains of genetically inherited diseases
so basically, i found out about 2 years ago my mom has chrons. it didnât seem super important, cause i had no idea what it really was. basically it means your stomach can be really sensitive to certain things and can cause you to have severe stomach aches, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, etc.
Well earlier in 2022, my brother got hit with his first chrons-type reaction, and he lost a shit ton of weight (because occasionally with chrons/uc you get malabsorption where your body takes little to no nutrients from the food you eat) and he was throwing up and was really sick. thatâs how he found out he had chrons.
Skipping ahead a few months, i was in italy on a trip with my family when i started to get severe stomach aches and nausea after eating meat, drinking milk, and sometimes even just plain old pasta. i was so goddamn confused. then i started to loose weight (which is weird for me because i donât really gain or loose weight cause iâm generally fit). The stomach aches only got worse, i started throwing up after certain meals, and sometimes couldnât eat from the fear of the pain.
thatâs when everything clicked. basically, i found out i ALSO have chrons. so there are some things i can eat that wonât kill me, and others that will put me in bed for 2 days straight.
long story short, if your parents have hereditary disease, please donât ignore the signs that you might have it as well.
also for those who might be worried about me, iâm fine, im still feeling out what i can and canât eat (because itâs different for everyone) but generally iâm doing pretty great and am back to a normal healthy life.

recently i've really been struggling with my fibro and chron's and was talking to one of my bosses who is also disabled. and she said something to be that like,,, really hit. she was just talking about how being disabled is natural. if we weren't natural, we wouldn't exist. if you ever feel broken because you're disabled, remind yourself that you are not a mistake; you are meant to be here, even when flare ups are happening. even when it's hard. and it was so great to here because disabled people are part of this ecosystem, just like everyone else. you are natural. you are natural. you are natural <3
