Collateral Innocence explores what it’s like growing up in chaos through the eyes of a child. The poem touches on neglect, addiction, violence, poverty, and the responsibilities many children end up carrying before they should have. Some of the things mentioned, like lice, roaches, hunger, dirty clothes, or an unclean home, are often looked down on or made fun of. But those things were never the child’s fault.

Before I fall asleep, I beg God,

I ain't up to the test.

I just wanna lay my head

down an rest.

So if there's a chance,

even a small chance,

The man up there is listening to me,

Try lessening the heartache of ADHD.

My temper tantrums are valid,

but what am I gonna do then?

Let the anger take the wheel

and spend my life in the pen?

I ain't bluffing when I say,

I'm taking my prescription if it's a stressful day,

Make those motherfuckin blues fly, fly away.

what a hopeless place i'm in.

What you call a sin, I call part of my day.

I ain't quitting, there's no way,

I'll make it back to heaven some day.

Standing on the edge of the Abyss,

looking down and contemplating the fall.

Looking at everyone like I never really knew them at all.

As the rain taps on the gutter.

My words start to stutter,

How many times have I got to fucking say,

It aint going in,

i'll go again another day.

Losing your pateince,

And to be honest I dont blame you.

Don't count on me,

there's something missin,

I have a problem,

I don't think I listen.

Voices echo in my head,

sayin’ I ain’t built for this shit.

Pour a little for the dramatics,

I light it up and take a hit,

Attention that I crave,

Don't tell me to behave.

Every emotion automatic,

I don’t even question it.
