This is not AI. A 13-story building really toppled over almost intact.
On June 27, 2009, an apartment block under construction at Shanghai’s Lotus Riverside complex fell completely onto its side.
Investigators found that excavated soil had been piled about 33 feet (10 m) high on one side of the building while a 15-foot-deep (4.6 m) underground garage was being excavated on the other. The resulting lateral pressure exceeded the foundation piles’ capacity and caused the entire structure to tip over.
The original structural design, geotechnical survey and foundation piles were found to meet applicable standards; the failure was linked to the construction conditions around the building.
