Peggy wrings her hands together, pacing back and forth in the small room Tony had set her up in. The last time she had been this nervous had been-- well she wasn’t sure if she had ever felt quite this nervous before. She hoped that this wouldn’t all be for nothing. When Tony had come to her with the idea, it had been one of her more lucid days. She had been reluctant at first. Yet again, she knew she was at the end of her life. If this didn’t work, then really, what harm was there? So, she’d agreed. 

It took a few weeks after that for the pair to circle back. Tony wanted to make sure everything was just right. She could see the light in his eyes. It reminded him way too much of his father. Though, that was a thought she kept to herself.

Admittedly, Peggy had been surprised when it worked - when it really worked. She kept expecting it to reverse, and turn her back into a frail, old woman. But, it didn’t. The only logical thing to do now was to fake her own death. That way, no one would know. It would far too suspicious for someone that looked exactly like a young version of her to appear so quickly. No, she had to stay in hiding. It absolutely killed her to keep this from Steve. At least for now. It was the only way to truly make sure their plan worked. It had to be believable. 

“ when i left the  TESSERACT  on earth,  i thought it would be  safe... ”  there’s a part of her that wants to take the blame for all of this tragedy,  that tells her she’s  failed  somehow,  but she knows better by now than to let her emotions get the best of her.  she shakes off the thought,  now mainly concerned about  how  it was found to begin with.  the last she saw it was in the form of a  CAT  in 1995.  “ when was it found?  where was it? ”

     𝐁𝐎𝐓𝐇 𝐌𝐄𝐍 𝐓𝐀𝐊𝐄 𝐎𝐅𝐅 𝐑𝐔𝐍𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐀𝐓 𝐅𝐔𝐋𝐋 𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐄𝐃,  a  detail  buck  still  has  not  been  able  to  fully  wrap  his  head  around.  steve  rogers,  his  little  stevie  rogers  -  somehow  keeping  in  stride  at  his  side.  hell,  his  best  friend  is  actually  starting  to  move  faster  than  james  is  able  to  keep  up  with.  now,  he  is  the  one  struggling  to  fill  his  lungs  &&  catch  his  breath.  he  is  the  one  struggling  to  keep  up  -  on  weak  legs  which  shake  and  threaten  to  buckle.  by  some  miracle,  they  survive  their  run - in  with  the  RED SKULL  &&  his  kraut  MAD SCIENTIST.  they  even  manage  to  locate  an  exit,  leaping  through  a  collapsed  wall  and  into  the  cold  embrace  of  FREEDOM.  the  brisk,  november  air  slams  against  him,  punching  what  little  oxygen  he  has  left  out  of  his  lungs,  but  he  will  gladly  take  the  chill  over  the  HEAT  of  the  wild  inferno  licking  at  their  shadow.  

     another  explosion  detonates  and  shakes  the  ground,  so  close  it  leaves  james’  ears  ringing  and  packing  a  punch  so  POTENT  it  has  both  men  stumbling  forward.  barnes  wastes  no  time  entertaining  disorientation.  despite  his  depleted  body’s  PROTEST,  he  recovers  quickly,  eyes  pointed  forward  as  he  reaches  out  to  help  steve,  INSTINCT.  they  both  find  their  footing  and  then  take  off  running  again,  not  letting  up  until  the  heat  at  their  backs  have  cooled  ;;  until  the  noise  of  the  DISASTER  behind  them  has  died  down.  even  when  they  reach  the  surrounding  brush  and  start  to  slow,  even  then  james  does  not  dare  look  back  at  the  burning  building.  the  cold  air  creeps  &&  crawls  over  his  body,  heated  sweat  abating  into  something  sticky  and  frigid  against  his  skin.  it  leaves  him  trembling.  

     with  a  shaking  hand,  he  grabs  at  steve’s  sleeve,  nearly  dragging  him  along.    ❛  come  on –   gotta  move.  ❜    he  mumbles,  ears  ringing,  lungs  screaming,  body  shaking,  eyes  wide  &&  stomach  rolling.     gray  eyes  start  to  lose  focus,  as  the  adrenaline  threatens  to  taper  off.  he  gives  steve’s  sleeve  another  DESPERATE  tug.  

     𝐈𝐓’𝐒 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐄𝐍𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇 𝐓𝐎 𝐊𝐄𝐄𝐏 𝐇𝐈𝐌 𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐘.   as  if  he  doesn’t  already  have  enough  enemies,  his  body  decides  in  that  moment  to  BETRAY  him.  sickness  violently  overtakes  him.  a  sickly  chill  washes  over  him,  powerful  enough  to  disorient  him  for  a  few  seconds.  vertigo  seizes  him  and  drags  him  down.  his  knees  finally  buckle.  unbeknownst  to  the  man,  his  own  body  has  been  pitted  against  him,  infected  by  a  bastard  serum.  the  DEBONAIR  bucky  barnes,  a  man  always  so  comfortable  in  his  own  skin  now  struggles  with  a  heavy  body  that  suddenly  feels  alien.  control  has  been  pilfered,  POISON  pumped  into  his  blood  &&  now  his  body  feels  as  different  as  steve  rogers’  looks.       

     something  is  WRONG  -  very  wrong.  

     the  stink  of  acid  assaults  his  nostrils,  bile  rising  &&  burning  his  throat.  he  heaves,  stomach  twisting  in  pain  and  presses  his  clammy  forehead  against  a  tree.  the  bark  digs  into  his  skin,  but  it  helps,  even  if  only  a  little.  his  shoulders  droop,  as  do  his  eyes,  overcome  by  a  sudden  exhaustion.   ❛  just  give  me  a  second...  ❜    he  mumbles  weakly,  sounding  strangely  unlike  himself.  his  mind  is  screaming :  get  up,  move.  move !  GET UP OR YOU ARE DEAD !  a  prisoner  of  war’s  corrupted  mindset.
