A poem about playing water polo and being kin that's been sitting in my drafts for a while:

I drive into the water

the icy shock changes skin to fur, hands to paws

we swim

the water around us turns to foam as we surge forward

it is not long before our legs burn, urging us to stop

but the pack swims and so do we

on and on and on

water-logged fur and stinging eyes

the rhythm of the pack's heartbeat

the ice glues our eyes shut

the burn of our muscles set fire to the air around us

we swim until the spray turns red and runs with our blood

and our flesh melts away revealing brittle white bone and sharpened fangs,

until we are fragments of ourselves

and yet

we are part of our pack

Dogkin Confession: I like to eat dry minute-rice because it reminds me of the texture of dry dog food and I can eat it off a plate with my mouth without being judged too terribly.
