âItâs a mistranslation⊠sort ofââ Buck waggled his head, âItâsâ It means the flavours. The flavours mix while it stews, itâs why it's so rich. Chicken broth, pork meatballs, the veggies all mixed up together. The flavours compliment each other, it marries up while it cooks soâŠâ
âSo⊠wedding soup,â Eddie finished with a chuckle.
Buck laughed, and repeated, âWedding soup.â

He should be used to this by nowârushing frantically under fluorescent lights, past nurses and gurneys and patients and families. He should be used to these echoing halls and this panic crawling up his throat. Heâs been here more times than he can count. It never gets easier.
He has a duffel still slung over his shoulder, that heaviness he always feels when he steps off a plane still settled deep under his skin. Chris had texted him, somewhere between TSA and his gate, that everything was fine. Eddie was fine. The surgery was minorâa pretty nasty broken arm, but nothing life-threatening. Concussion and bruised ribs and a sprained neck. A car crash. Some asshole running a red light. Hitting the driverâs side head on. It could have been worse.
But someone should tell Buckâs spiked adrenalineâhis racing heartâhis shaking hands. He spent too long in the not knowing. Since this hospital two states away had called him to tell him that Eddie was in an accident, that he was in emergency surgery, that they couldnât tell him any more details until he got here. That he was the only person listed on Eddieâs emergency contacts list.
And that last bitâthat last little revelationâthat extremely baffling piece of information that had left him scrambling to LAX for a flight he was certain he would missâcalling Christopher from the Uber to tell him, again, that his dad is in the hospitalâwell, it certainly didnât help this confused, desperate reeling.
So, heâs tired and heâs frustrated and his anxiety has refused to die down, and heâs rushing through another hospital because his best friend almost died again, only this one is in Texas, and this time he hasnât seen him for months outside of a phone screen.Â
So maybe he can be forgiven for the way he slams the door open. For the rise in his voice and the arms waving hysterically through the air, and the âWhy the fuck am I still your emergency contact?â
Eddie looks up from his plastic cup of Jell-O with a startled look. Eyes wide and innocent like thereâs nothing strange about this whole situation. Like everybody with family a fifteen minute drive from them would list their one, singular emergency contact as the best friend he left nearly a thousand miles away.Â
âI mean, where do you get off?â Buck asks. Pacing and hysterical. âDo you know how fucking stressed Iâve been for the last five hours? I had to drop everythingâ everythingâ Eddie, I was on shift! Andâ and you owe me like five hundred bucks by the way because last-minute tickets are expensive as shit. And youâ you know I fucking hate flying but Iâmâ but they called me and told me nothing except that you were in fucking surgeryâ andâ you know, if you were just normalâ just a normal fucking person they could have calledâI donât knowâyour mom! And I couldâve been told, âHey, by the way, Eddie broke his arm but heâs fine!â instead of thinking you were dying again! But noâ no that would be tooâ too fuckingâ like that would make too much sense! So, here I am, I guess! Because by the time I knew anything real I had already bought my goddamn ticket! So, Iâm here. In fucking El Paso. Are you happy with yourself?â
He finally slows down enough to notice Eddie smiling at himâsmiling, that bastardâspoon of green Jell-O still not quite reaching his lips. âWant some?â he asks, holding the plastic cup out to Buck.
âDo Iâ what? No, of course I donât want some!â
Eddie shrugs, and finally takes the bite. âYour loss.â
Buckâs arms fall to his sides. His chest still heaving as his breathing finally starts to settle down. âThatâs all you have to say?â
âYou wouldâve come anyway,â he says, like itâs obviousâwhich, maybe it is. âBest to cut out the middle man, right?â
âNo,â Buck insists. âThat is definitely not how that works.â
Eddie sighs and looks down at the sad tray of food in front of him. Wiggles his head in the way he does when heâs deciding what to say. âYouâve met my parents,â is what he eventually decides on. âTheyâre not always great in an emergency.â
âThey donât have toâ to administer the fucking CPR, Eddie!â
Eddieâs jaw tensesâclenches and unclenchesâand thatâs all it takes, apparently, for Buck to soften. When Eddie looks back up at him his eyes are still wide, but theyâve lost that teasing glint they had when Buck walked in here. Theyâre pleading now. Apologetic. âSorry,â he says quietly. âYouâre right.â He shakes his head. âI guess I just didnât want to risk it.â
Buck frowns at that. âRisk what?â he asksâ gentle this time.
âDidnât want to risk you not being here. Not knowing you had to beâif you had to be.â
And thatâ thatâs not what he expected. Buck lets out a breath and finally sits next to the bed. Drops his bag. Lets himself begin to relax. âChris wouldâve told me,â he assures him.
Eddie purses his lips. Opens them again to let out a resigned little sigh. âYeah,â he admits. âProbably.â
And there goes the last of Buckâs angerâonly it was never really anger. Frustrationâ confusionâ combustible when theyâre mixed with the thrumming of his anxiety. But now heâs here with him, and Eddieâs looking at him with this vulnerability that he almost never gets to see. And heâs alive and he was smiling before and he was making stupid jokes and for the first time since he picked up his phone this morning, Buck feels some real relief. So finallyâ finally, he asks, âHow are you feeling?âÂ
âOh, you know, itâs no bullet wound,â Eddie says with a small smile.
âGlass got you pretty good, though, huh?â Buck asks, nodding at the small cuts littering his faceâthe bandages across his cheek.
âMm, might have to kiss my modeling career goodbye.â
Buck shakes his head. âIâd still buy what youâre selling.â
Eddie chuckles at that, before wincing and pressing a hand to his side. âWell, I might have to try,â he sighs. âCanât exactly drive an Uber without a car. And donât think they want me doing it one-handed either.â
âI.. I donât know, honestly,â Eddie says, his face falling again. He worries his lip with a force that canât be comfortable, his teeth digging into the thin gash thatâs running across it. âI donât have health insurance. Or savings anymore.â He looks up at the ceiling and shakes his head. âYou know, they have the guy, heâs supposed to pay damages, but thatâs a wholeâŠâ he waves his hand vaguely. âI canât wait that long. I could barely afford my mortgage as it was.â He scoops up more of the Jell-O. Sets it back down on his tray. âIâm finally making progress with Chris, and Iâm just⊠Iâm gonna have to leave him again.â
âWhat do you mean?â Buck asks, his fingers twitching towards laying a comforting hand across Eddieâs own.
âBobby will give me my job back, right?â Eddie asks. âAnd I can sell the house to pay for all this andâ and moving costs. I might even make a bit of a profit with how much I fixed it up, you know?â
âEddieââ
âI mean, what else can I do, Buck? I donâtââ
âI can pay,â Buck blurts out. Before even he realises what heâs saying. Not that he would ever take it back anyway. âI canâ I can pay the hospital, okay? Andâ and the rest of it⊠I can cover that too. Forâ for a while, at least. Just until you figure something else out.â
âBuck, you know Iâm not gonna let you do that for me.â
Buck shakes his head, indignant. âThen let me do it for Chris. Right? Thatâs who all this is about anyway. He needs his dad.â
âNo, you canâtââ
âYouâre not gonna talk me out of it,â he says. âYou know me. You know you canât.â
And Eddie is looking at him now with that look he had when Buck had told him he was subletting his apartment. That disbelief. That warmth. That deep, wet-eyed stare.Â
âYouâll pay me back eventually,â he adds gently. âOne way or another.â
And Eddie is still staring at him, still speechless. Only heâs not looking at his eyes anymoreâat least, not entirely. His gaze keeps flitting down to Buckâs lips, and his tongue keeps flicking out to wet his ownâand Buck has barely had time to register what that means, before Eddieâs hand is on the back of his neck andâ oh. And heâs kissing him.
Buckâs hand comes up to cup his cheek, before he remembers the cuts all across it. So he laces it into his hair instead. Leans his elbow on the pillow next to his head. Folds himself over him. Heâs not really sitting in the chair anymore, more hovering over it, all his weight on that elbow, all his focus on the feeling of Eddieâs tongue in his mouth, of Eddieâs fingers at the base of his skull. It feels like hours and it feels like seconds that theyâre kissing and sighing and smiling and gasping and breathing each otherâs breathâwhen Eddie finally pulls away. A soft grin still spread across his flushed lips. The cut across it is bleeding, and Buck only now notices the faint metallic taste on his tongue. Not the first time heâs had Eddieâs blood in his mouth. Itâs a much more pleasant experience this time around.
Buck falls back into the chair, his cheeks sore from smiling, as Eddieâs fingers trace lightly over his features. âOkay,â he breathes. âGood, uh, yeahâ thatâs worthâ yeah. I think a few more of those and weâll be even.â
