"If I were to go take a dunk in the Pacific, would anyone come with me?"
Eddie leans back against the bench, flicking his eyes up. "Yeah, I suppose. Probably feel good, get the sweat off."
"And the salt on," Hen says, stretching her arms wide. "Good for the skin."
"And the curls," Buck whines, "but it's so cold."
"Aww, come on, Buckaroo, it's good for you."
"Is it?" Buck's voice is sharp, high-pitched, and desperate to stay warm.
"Research isn't really good one way or the other, could kill you as far as I know. But Scandinavians have been doing it for ten thousand years, so it's probably fine!" Chimney claps against his thighs, flicking sweat onto the bench. He stands and starts climbing down the benches, only to have Buck try and sit up at the same time, bringing them roughly nose to belly.
"Well, good morning to you too. Gotta say, not the Buckley I usually see from this angle."
"Eugh, please don't remind me." Buck's scooted back into Eddie, Hen and Eddie are chuckling like school kids, and Chimney's mostly off the bench, but something in Buck's posture pauses. He reaches out to turn Chimney gently by the ribcage, his wide palms across his brother-in-law's torso, as he gently runs his fingers down the wrinkled scar across his abdomen.

Evan takes a deep breath, looking down at his hands, before starting.
“Okay, this is going to sound crazy.” Evan looks up to see Tommy’s full focus on him and feels his face heat at the attention before looking down again. “After I left, the–the last time I was here, I just–I don’t know,” Evan shakes his head and tries to find the right words, “It’s like there was this, like, mental block, almost? Like, I left here and I went home and I just completely forgot about everything. I remembered the house, but not being inside it, and I definitely didn’t remember you…” Evan mumbles the last part and if his face wasn’t red before, it certainly is now. He looks up at Tommy, still giving Evan his undivided attention, “I am so sorry,” he finishes. He just hopes Tommy can forgive him for breaking his promise.
“You don’t have to be sorry.” Evan can’t read Tommy’s expression, but he doesn’t seem mad or disappointed.
“Tommy, of course I do! I had an amazing day with you, I–I didn’t want to leave, I liked hanging out with you so much, and then I just forgot about it? Who does that?”
“A lot of people,” at Evan’s disbelieving look, Tommy continues, “I mean it, Evan, don’t worry about it. It’s just,” Tommy looks around and gestures like he’s searching for the right words, “how this place is." He finally settles on, and what does that mean?
Evan gets the feeling Tommy’s used to being forgotten about. Because of this conversation, yes, but also because there seems to be no sign that anyone else, other than the two of them, has ever been in Tommy’s house and because of what Tommy said years ago about his parents not being around. It’s not fair, Tommy is one of the kindest people that Evan has ever met, if anyone deserves to be looked after and taken care of, it’s him.
“You didn’t answer my question, though.”
Once again, Tommy’s voice brings Evan out of his spiraling thoughts. He must take too long to answer because Tommy continues on, gently, “What are you doing here, Evan?”

Summary:
I (29F) surprised my brother (35M) (let's call him E) this afternoon by showing up at his house from out of town. He lives in a big city in Cali and I live in our hometown in TX. He moved to Cali to follow his wife who has since passed. They weren't actually together at the time, I don't think. E said they were reconciling but…he did stalk her across the country, you know?
Anyway, I surprised my brother but when I knocked, this huge, hot guy who looked kind of familiar answered the door without a shirt on. He was like, movie star hot. Insanely good looking in a way that feels fake. Looks like he's in his late-40s. We're going to call him T.

Summary:
"Hey, Buck," Chimney called down the table, a dinner roll in his hand. "Are you single? I can't tell with you sometimes."
The acid in Buck's stomach curdled. He risked a quick look at Tommy, whose shoulders were pulled tight, ready to bolt. Buck bit his lip. "K-kind of?"
"What does 'kind of' mean?" Bobby asked, frowning.
"Yeah, Buck, what does 'kind of' mean," Hen teased him, mean like an older sister on tv. Buck squinted at her and pursed his lips, ignoring her when she laughed at him.
or, Chimney tries to play matchmaker and it shines a light on the cracks in Buck's situationship.

Summary:
Kristine’s favorite patron—Evan “call me Buck” Buckley, card holder since 2020—was a tall man with curly hair and cute dimples. He came in irregularly, sometimes with a child, sometimes with another adult, sometimes alone. The books he picked for himself were always nonfiction and always totally random, two or five books on the same weird, occasionally esoteric topic. He was a chatterbox about it, choosing to come to the counter instead of using the self check out. The only time he checked out fiction was when he had a guest with him.
“Hey, Kristine!” Buck said with a brilliant grin. If Kristine weren’t 69 and gay as the day was long, she’d be in love with the guy. As it was, it was hard not to be charmed by him.
Kristine turned away from her task, checking books in form the book drop, to smile at him in return. She held her hands out for Buck’s books—five this time—and asked, “What are we learning about today?”
Buck smiled at her, all dimples and white teeth and sparkling eyes. “Pirates!”
or, Buck's favorite librarian has some uncharitable thoughts about his love life

feel what it's like to be new [on AO3]
Buck isn't the first person he tells. That's Chris, and he stands by that one. He's practicing honesty with his kid. It doesn't come easy to him, but he tries. Buck would understand. Buck will understand, when Eddie tells him, which he will.
Chris is the first living person he tells. Technically, actually, the first person he tells is Shannon.
The cemetery she's buried in is a nice place. Full of trees, green grass, well-maintained. He tries to come here with Chris at least once a month, and so far, at least, Chris hasn't balked, hasn't complained about spending a few hours eating a picnic lunch or dinner or takeout picked up on the way and talking to a woman who'll never talk back again.
This time, Eddie comes alone. He brings a batch of coyotas wrapped in paper—Shannon's favorite of the sweets his abuela used to send them. She always liked Shannon better than his parents did, part of the ongoing battle of wills between her and his mom. He'll stop by her grave today, too, kiss his fingers to the cold stone and imagine that she knows he's here. For now, he sits cross-legged in the grass, in the bright warm hum of a summer morning, facing his wife's headstone.
Ex-wife, he imagines her saying to him, dry and laughing. They never did get to have that ending, the one they both survived.

Eddie pulls out of the forecourt, following the signs back to the highway. The road they're on is bordered closely by trees and they drive for far longer than he expects without reaching an exit. He slows, craning forward, slightly losing sense of where they are, although he's sure they're going in the right direction.
'Do you have signal?' he says and Chris looks down at his phone.
'No. Did we go the wrong way?'
'I don't see how. We should have joined up with the highway by now.'
They were making good time and Eddie was hoping they'd get to their hotel tonight, get a bit of time to rest before meeting Shannon for dinner. If they're lost it could add hours to their journey, they'll have to stop somewhere else and Eddie is already tired from driving practically nonstop for several days. He has a map in the glove compartment but as he reaches across Chris to pull it out, the road starts to curve, following the bend of the river, and Eddie has to slam on the breaks so they don't crash into a tree, its whole trunk jagged and splintered at the base as if it was snapped in two, the tangled ball of its roots ripped out of the earth, blocking the road.
This fic is dedicated to my beloved kasia @buckpussy who has listened to me endlessly going on about this idea for weeks and encouraged me to actually write it❣️
Also thank you to maurine @adamsvanrhijn who hasn’t seen From OR 911 and still gave me some pointers on American locations and road trips 🙏
Spoilers for the first season of From, although this diverges pretty quickly from the plot of that show so it’s mostly the setting and some scenes here and there that I’ve borrowed for my nefarious purposes (buddie getting together) 😈
yayy when I first started writing this one I was really excited about it, but I ended up stepping away from it because I was hating everything I was writing lol so I'm really excited to get back into it<33
"Why would you let me do that?"
Lucy just laughs at him, just like the traitor she's proven herself to be. He's never going out with her again, he's never telling her about the weird shit Buck and Eddie do together on shift ever again.
She's also definitely not invited to his funeral when Buck murders him.
"I don't know what to tell you. I left you guys alone for ten minutes to go dance, and by the time I got back to the table you had your tongue down Eddie's throat." Lucy shrugs. Ravi feels his eye twitch at the evident amusement on her face. There's no way she's enjoying this right now, especially considering she's the one who let him get himself in between Buck and Eddie's whole…thing. "You said you wanted to help Eddie get laid and, well," Lucy huffs out another laugh, "you succeeded."
Ravi groans, a long, painful sound that he's sure is probably drawing him dirty looks from the other people in the cafe. "I was trying to be a good friend," he laments, putting his head in his hands, "you should've seen him when we went out with Buck. He didn't pay attention to anyone in that club that wasn't Buck, and trust me, Buck tried. He was throwing Eddie at almost everyone woman in there."
