The Long Walk Home [Drabble] Part 2
The two men stared at her and she could feel the menace in there gaze. The first among them seemed calm, his wide brimmed hat hide much of his face yet his angular features and slight figure. He was likely an elf of some sort. Adorned in fine clothes, and steel armor and a long sword, he was likely wealthy or even a noble. Unlike the other man he barely moved and seemed to be studying her intently.
the Second man, was scruffy and had torn clothes. and a hooded cloak that barely hid his broad jawline. He paced back and forth and seemed agitated like he wanted to lunge at her at any moment. A human by the smell alone, likely young and impatient. He held a long spear in hand and that alone made him quite intimidating.
She could instantly tell these men were not just soldiers or even mercenaries. Certainly not local thugs, her mind raced as to what they could want and why her. Yet she couldn't shake that pendant they both wore--- holy symbols? one she had seen before but knew little about. The Naga goddess? that was all she knew but knew they were bad news and she needed a way to escape.
She said it as firm as she could not wanting to let her voice crack. Sometimes her best weapon was looking as threatening as she could. But some how she had doubts it would sway these two. They seemed poised for conflict and while she knew some magic--- she doubted they would give her a chance to use it. Her best tactic? run, but where? if she could get to the roof maybe she'd have the advantage? but then would they even let her move? they might cut her down before she could blink...
" You, We are here for you child... "
The elf spoke, it was soft and flighty and yet firm and held a dark tone to it that made he swallow hard.
" We heard of a demon stalking the streets, we came to investigate. Clearly the locals are misinformed. A demon perhaps not... yet, an abomination all the same... the vile creatures of the Azlanti can not be allowed to roam free... "
Kairi's heart skipped a beat as the Elf spoke, and explained himself. Not just mercenaries or soldiers. Inquisitors, that made sense and also turned her blood to ice. These were religious Zealots who would kill in the name of there god be they wrong or not. They couldn't be reasoned with, or frightened by her claws and fangs--- if they decided she was a threat they would simply put her down.
" I am not a demon! i don't even know who or what the Azlanti are! "
She tried to interject but the elf pulled his hat from his head to reveal his pale skin, and those soft amber eyes. His head shaved and looking ever the Pious man. She had her doubts, no one murdered the innocent without tainting there soul. She could feel that urge to run, to flee and never look back! yet her paws refused to move--- refused to look away from those fierce amber eyes.
" That hardly matters if you know what you are or not child. Abomination, Aberration... mutant, ... monster. Your body and soul is twisted with darkness... i would see that darkness does not infect others. I'm sure this seems unfair... but such is life... it will be easier if you surrender and accept your fate. But i'll understand should you choose to fight..."
She held her breath as he finished speaking, and felt her claws extend from her paws, and she braced herself. There would be no words, no explanations, only the divine fury of these would be assassins. The clash of her claws, and the fear in her heart!
