Between exams, revising and Regulus’s lessons, James had very little time to do anything he actually wanted to do, but he tried to squeeze in a quick fly around the Quidditch pitch a few times a week. He needed to feel the adrenaline coursing through his veins. It had been a good call coming out this afternoon. He’d just finished a particularly nasty arithmancy exam, and they had a lesson planned for after dinner. He pointed his broom towards the sky and then let the handle drop back towards the ground.
His stomach swooped at the change in direction, and his heart pounded as he raced towards the grass. He focused so completely on the distance between him and the ground that he almost missed the bludger coming at him from the left. He clocked it seconds before it would have hit him and broke out of the dive sharply.
The force of his ascent pushed him into the broom handle. He narrowly missed crashing into the stands, yanking his broom back towards the pitch, the bludger hot on his heels.
He yanked his wand out of his wrist holster and pointed it at the three Slytherins standing at the edge of the pitch. Wilkes, Snape and Mulciber.
“Expelliarmus!” He bellowed over the wind, and all three of their wands soared into his waiting hand. He leant over his broom and hurtled towards them, rising at the last second and hearing their screams as the bludger crashed through them as he flew back up to the castle, whooping and cheering the entire way.
