for an aro person, i find it kinda ironic that the way i conceptualise my gender is to some extent based on how i envision myself in romantic relationships? as in, as an afab person i have always found myself more drawn to imagining being The Guy in a straight relationship. I remember joking more than once as a teen that i'd make a better boyfriend than actual guys. and honestly at this point i can't tell if my romantic orientation is colouring my gender identity in an arogender kind of way, or the other way around.

but then again, i do not care enough to unpack that

Just discovered arogender was a thing and actually? That makes so much sense.

For me, it's like... performing gender based on the expectations of society and what society expects from me, and experiencing gender within the context of a perceived romantic situation. The way I perform femininity changes based on which gender I end up in a seemingly romantic context with (as dictated by amatonormativity).

I perform femininity differently around people in a perceived romantic situation, depending on their gender. Before I realized I was aromantic, I'd perform femininity differently around my Crushes of the Year based on if they were a girl or a boy. And it continues to this day whenever I'm placed in a situation that amatonormativity deems as romantic!

This makes so much fucking sense.
