hi !!! i’ve been identifying as aro for about five years now but haven’t really interacted with the online aro-space (heh) so i’m not very well informed on specific labels. is there a particular name for a person who experiences a net zero of romantic attraction in any way shape or form? i remember coming across the term black stripe aro once a very long time ago but i have no idea if that’s the correct word to use.
there's been some terms, but honestly I don't think I've ever witnessed any get big enough to say "this is it, this is the term you're looking for". I think, historically, the aro and ace communities have tried to shy away from terms with that sort of "never has that type of attraction ever" definition, in no small part because we have always had folks with just one or very weak and barely present or it doesn't make me act fundamentally different from "no" attraction types and we really, really try to avoid those folks feeling excluded.
i don't think it's inherently bad to have a term, but our communities formed while "gold star" lesbians and gays still had huge sway. If you're unfamiliar with those terms - good! I hope they fade into the annals of history. These terms refer to people who were strictly homosexual and never (not even once!) had sex with someone outside of that. and it... really was just "you must be This Type of Gay to Get Queer Rights", and ultimately was used to create/promote intense biphobia. mods here learned of the queer community through tumblr in early 2013: it was still a question if bi people could reclaim 'queer'. if bi people were gay enough to be oppressed, since they didn't have to be gay, aka exclusively homosexual.
and so, you can see why the a-spec communities pretty... intentionally did not form a term around being the "idealized" example. i still get a lot of asks to this day about if people can be in the a-spec community if they aren't that complete, "never feels attraction ever" type. I suppose, if there is a term, I don't know that I would promote its use. I don't know that I would want it to exist, and that is... as someone who would be one. I'm leery of it. i worry that in our current era of purity culture and callout culture and "everything you ever do is on the internet forever and recorded and sold for a profit" culture... i don't think I trust people to be any better.
