That is extremely dependent on who she’s talking to. It’s actually a very sensitive topic of discussion for her. Obviously, she doesn’t talk about it with just anyone, especially her classmates. You’ve gotta be pretty damn close to her for the topic to go anywhere beyond the mere implication of Connor’s passing.

it’s easiest for her to talk about it with Jim and her mom, considering how hard it is for her to talk about it in the first place.

I’m Sarah’s case, they’ll talk about it every so often, and she handles it very delicately since she knows just as well as any of them how traumatic Connor’s death was for her.

Delbert is similar, and he’ll handle it as delicately as he can should the topic ever come up. He will occasionally stumble over his words, but it does help Sophie feel a little bit better.

She actually (briefly) talked about it with Amelia in chapter 12 after the supernova, and she was surprisingly comfortable about it. I suppose it was because Amelia kind of reminded her of her mom. Anyways, Sophie actually still feels decently okay with talking to amelia about her dad, even after the voyage, and the captain keeps in mind to handle the topic with care.

Silver honestly doesn’t really like talking about it very much himself, but will lend Sophie an ear if she needs it, no matter how much it hurts because he knows it hurt her just as much, if not even more. He’ll never deny her a shoulder to cry on if it gets too deep.

To this day, Sophie still misses her dad as badly as ever, and I don’t believe she’ll ever stop.

Connor’s favorite thing about Adora was probably her heart. She was just such a good person, and showed not only appreciation, but a passion for the little things in life, most of which most people take for granted. She was just so true, and he loved that about her 🥰

Adora would sing La Vie En Rose, A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes, Ophelia, Home (by Gabrielle Aplin), May It Be, Nobel Maiden Fair, For The Dancing and The Dreaming, and Sleepsong whenever she took a turn lulling Sophie to sleep.

Connor would sing Misty Mountains, Waterbound, Falling Like The Stars, Never Be Alone, Lost Boy, Safe & Sound, Halcyon, Let Her Go, Upside Down, Bloom - Bonus Track, Baby Mine, Season Of The Witch, You’ll Be In In My Heart, Banana Pancakes, Soldier Poet King, Home (by Josef Salvat) and The Last Unicorn on his turns.

I can see Sarah singing Alice In Wonderland, Once Upon A Dream, and a couple Norah Jones songs to sing Sophie and Jim to sleep when they were little.

How does Sophie and her mother cope with the grief? Do they get through it together?

And a less sad question but a spoilery one because I'm impatient; any hints on what might go down for the the second part of Sophie's journey??? 👀👀👀

Oh boy, we’re treading into angst territory

Sophie and Adora dealt with the loss in very different ways.

Adora did grieve for quite a while, but eventually went looking for professional help. After about a year, she had begun the healing process. Unfortunately, this was only so long before she fell ill.

Sophie, on the other hand... she never went to therapy. She just set up these some walls around herself and hid away in this dark and cold little fortress of solitude for a long time.

for the record, Connor’s passing wasn’t the direct cause of her depression (it’s a result of mental problems, anxiety, trauma, and a chemical imbalance in her brain) but it would definitely be easier for her to deal with if he were still around.

Anyway, she let her depression manifest for the next 7 years, but after she got home from the voyage, she felt a little more comfortable talking about her feelings with loved ones, including her mom.

Sophie still has depressive episodes, and does occasionally fall back into that darkness, but it doesn’t last too terribly long, and she handles them better.

She doesn’t take any antidepressant meds, but they are considering looking for a therapist for her to talk to. This really put Adora’s conscience at ease. In the end, things are better.

Now for the second part of the question

I’m still not sure what’s next for Sophie in her future, but I do trust that it will mostly revolve around her rediscovering herself. Since she spent so many years hiding herself away in the dark, she sort of forgot who she was for a long time. Now it’s time for her to find that part of herself again.
