Chapter 2
It didn't take long to turn those first, unsteady steps into firm ones. Nor those firm steps into running ones. Soon there was nowhere in the house or yard that I couldn't roam. Kaa-san wasn't surprised by this. More resigned. What surprised her was that I immediately followed that up by climbing anything that looked like it would hold my weight — furniture, ladders, trees…might have given her a few minor heart attacks.
Pretty sure that she started having me joining her in the exercises she did every morning purely to burn off some of that climbing energy in the hopes of keeping my feet on the ground. It was a good effort but strengthening my muscles, balance, coordination, and flexibility only improved my climbing.
That urge to pounce on things hadn't gone away. Arguably it was worse now that I was mobile. It seemed…instinctive to go still, then sneak up behind someone as quietly as I could. Which never seemed to be quiet enough to surprise anyone except Izumi.
"Gah!" Izumi yelped as I snagged her braid. Again. I tried not to but something about the swish of the knee-length braid as she moved through the house or the yard seemed to bypass my conscious brain entirely. I'd blink and have her braid in my hands. "I'm gonna put a bell on her!"
Kaa-san laughed. "Miho-chan's not a kitten!"
"Could have fooled me!"
Everyone started calling me Kitten after that. Not sure what Kakashi will make of that but it also didn't look like I'd be meeting him anytime soon. Kaa-san had tried to write another letter a few times since Izumi had gotten the truth out of her but each time had ended up burning it.
This was both a relief and a worry.
A relief in that I didn't have to try to steer The Plot while living on Middle of Nowhere Island instead of Konoha. A Plot that I couldn't remember all the details about and didn't have access to the wiki to look stuff up. Because this particular isekai adventure didn't involve getting to keep my phone and inter-dimensional access to the internet. Just what was in the old noggin.
A worry because just because soon or later, The Plot would come knocking. The Fourth Shinobi War. The Worldwide Hypnosis For Revenge/Peace thing that Obito was trying to pull off. Even just Kiri suddenly remembering that this island was part of the Land of the Waves and maybe they should hit it up for canon fodder. Naruto popping up for some reason. All of which might be too late to enact my other plan.
Which was — if I was ever in the position to do so — simply seeing if I can nudge Team Seven toward their character development sooner and faster. Along with the rest of the Rookie Nine and their senseis if I can manage it.
A simple plan but simple plans were flexible. And didn't require me to remember all the details from a show I didn't finish watching and hope I'm not getting fanon and canon confused. Assuming this world is following canon at all. Considering that Kakashi didn't have a daughter — that I'm aware of — in the OG…who knows what else might be different?
Teething sucked. It sucked a lot. Several times over this past couple months, I had been less screaming into my pillow and more like swearing viciously into my pillow. Probably a good thing that neither Kaa-san or my grandparents spoke English. This experience is making me really glad that Before Me didn't remember it. That I will not be able to just airbrush this particular experience out of my mind now — because this stupid body just has to have eidetic memory, thanks genius-dad — might have contributed to the pillow rants.
If I ever find out which power that be decided to reincarnate me with a fully aware adult mind, I'm gonna kick 'em. Hard.
The plastic rings that Kaa-san got helped. Their coolness was very soothing to the ever-present ache in my gums. Through how she got them that cold was a bit of a mystery. This world had electricity but out here in the middle of nowhere, it wasn't very reliable. I had lost count of the number of times it had died. Sometimes it came back on quickly. Other times it was took a few days. Probably why we only had a small refrigerator. That way if the power went out for a week — again — we could probably get the contents eaten before it spoiled. It was also probably why my family used old-fashioned methods to keep food preserved. Root cellars, drying, salting, canning, pickling, you name it — Kaa-san, Ojii-san, or Obaa-san did it. Thankfully, Obaa-san's cooking curse didn't seem to extend to stuff like slicing vegetables for pickling or making jerky.
The only problem with the plastic rings was that my emerging teeth were sharp. Sharp enough that those rings were lucky to last a full day. The wooden ones they switched to after the second set of plastic rings were reduced to confetti were holding up better. And the wood tasted better than the plastic.
As I chewed on one such wooden ring, I idly wondered if chompers like this were why my father wears a mask. I vaguely recalling him coming off as kinda goofy and harmless when he's first introduced. Like you know intellectually that Kakashi is jonin and therefore must have some skills but you don't really get clued into how dangerous he is until the Wave mission.
Would have been hard to maintain that "I'm not all that scary" vibe he seemed to be trying to project with a mouthful of razor sharp teething grinning at Team Seven and the audience. Assuming that's what he was trying to do in the first place. Big assumption there. There could very well be other reasons, especially since according to the flashbacks, Kakashi had worn a mask like that since he was a child.
Hell, I might be overthinking it entirely and Kakashi just thinks it makes him look cool.
"Kaa-san!"
She turned to me, eyes wide at my first words. My voice was squeaky and higher than my mind said my voice should sound but I swallowed the body dysphoria. I was on a mission. I toddled up to Kaa-san and grasped her hand. Looking up at her, I said "Love you!"
Because while so far our lives have been peaceful, that could change any moment. And if that change came tomorrow…I wanted Kaa-san to know that I loved her. I still loved my original Mom. But Kaa-san had more than earned her place in my heart. And she deserved to know that.
She smiled, tears welling up in those pretty violet eyes as she knelt down and hugged me fiercely. "I love you too, Kitten. Never doubt that."
"Never," I agreed, burying my face against her neck.
Accessing my chakra in ways beyond just looking at that ball of sparkling white and its' network of sparks and fairy lights throughout my body, was proving much slower process than walking, running, talking, or even teething. Probably because magic ninja bullshit wasn't something I did Before. Shocking, I know.
I know I should be able to move that energy around, be able to do things like concentrate a little extra in my feet to walk on walls or water, but how to do that was a puzzle. One that was taking a lot of time to figure out. Fortunately, if there was one thing that babies have an abundance of, it's free time.
Being a baby was also really really boring. Getting my potato body mobile had captured a lot of my attention for a while but now I had passed the first hurdles, I needed something new. Something that would engage my mind before I went crazy.
This became especially necessary when the family deemed me old enough to be around other kids. Mostly the babies and the other kids who were too young to be at the temple school during the day were being watched by the grannies. The experience taught me that I really had no idea what babies were like. My attempts to act like a normal baby, even before Operation Badass was launched, were extremely piss poor.
Oh well. Nothing I could do about that. Just gonna be the weird kid. At least my family doesn't care about my weirdness.
My non-existent baby acting skills weren't the reason that the village grannies and moms found me creepy. The mouthful of sharp teeth also played a role. No one else in the village had what amounted to fangs. Between that and my general weirdo-ness, the questions about how my father is had gotten louder and far less subtle. Kaa-san was even less inclined to answer those questions, especially since the conversation so often started with how strange they found me.
The other issue with the village's version of daycare was that children are very loud. And sometimes very smelly. It wasn't the kids' fault. They couldn't help that they were too little to talk or be potty trained. Or volume-control in the case of the toddlers. None of that knowledge made it easier not to claw my own ears and nose off sometimes.
Trying to move my chakra around was very welcome distraction. Even if it had inspired further moments of screaming frustration in my pillow. Something that the grannies had no more appreciation for than Obaa-san or Kaa-san. No matter how many times I tell them that I'm not gonna hurt myself doing that, they still take my pillow away.
It probably didn't help my arguments that I kept falling asleep during them. Progress at harnessing my chakra might be happening at a snail's pace but it was still tiring. Amazingly tiring for something that mainly involved sitting still with my eyes closed.
My first birthday was a quiet, simple affair with just my family and Izumi. Despite the rice harvest consuming most of their attention, they took the time to do a little celebration. A nice dinner with some sweets like dango and these doughnut-looking desserts that I remember seeing in anime — the round mochi and red bean paste daifuku and the fried and fish-shaped taiyaki. Sweetened red bean paste was tastier than I expected and didn't trigger any texture ick. Not as sweet as those flower and leaf candies sold at the festivals but those were made of what was basically sugar water or maple syrup so not surprising.
My presents were just as simple. A small stack of children's books that were probably the Naruto version of See Spot Run and The Hungry Caterpillar. I hoped there was some 'A is for Apple' type stuff so I could start learning how to read hiragana and kanji. With the books were a few toys. Nothing fancy. Just a ball and one of those ball-and-cup toys. Some string that I wasn't sure what was for. A stuffed toy kitten that was very soft and great for hugging. Predictably enough since I was a growing girl, there were several pieces of new clothes. Well, new to me. I was pretty sure that these had been made out of a larger set of clothes. I didn't mind that. As long as they were clean and comfortable, I didn't care if my clothes were new or hand-me-downs.
"Miho-chan has grown so much," Obaa-san said with a little sigh. "Hard to believe it's only been a year."
Kaa-san nodded in agreement. "She has. Might end up tall like her Tou-san."
"Maybe," Obaa-san said. "Could be taking after you. You grew like a weed right up until you didn't."
Kaa-san huffed a little laugh. "True enough."
Given that neither Obaa-san or Oji-san was much taller than Kaa-san, I doubted that Kaa-san ever stood a chance of being tall. Personally, I'd rather be short. For one, I was used to it. Before Me had been five feet tall and had been since she was twelve. The idea of being tall with long limbs felt weird.
And it would be nice, if I inherited something besides her eye color, from Kaa-san. So far it seems that the Hatake genes were dominant.
My final birthday gift made everyone laugh as it was threatened bell from Izumi. A small silver bell at the end of a red cord that she immediately looped around my neck. The bell fell to about mid-chest.
"See you sneak up on me, again, ya little scamp!" Izumi said triumphantly while everyone laughed again.
Now that sounds like a challenge, I thought with a smile. Some cats learn how to move without jigging the bell on their collar. Maybe I could too. It would be good practice for future ninja nonsense. Yes, a lot of a shinobi's ability to hide themselves was genjutsu but having some non-jutsu sneakiness couldn't hurt.
The second year of my new life went along the same lines as my first year. My movements got smoother, gaining more grace with each passing day. Encouraged by each jingle of the bell around my neck to eliminate any hint of clumsiness. Even if I couldn't blame Kaa-san and Izumi for giggling every time I gave the bell an annoyed look.
Kaa-san told me that I didn't have to wear it but I was determined now. I would sneak up on them, even while wearing a little bell.
My other learning goal for the year was reading and writing. A goal that Ojii-san was keen to encourage. He willingly spent hours at the little table with me, showing me how to make each character and helping me practice them. No matter how weary his steps were as he came back up the path, he never missed one of those lessons.
His dedication paid off. I was learning a lot. And my handwriting in this life was shaping up to be pretty instead of almost undecipherable chicken-scratch.
The progress on harnessing my chakra remained slower but there was progress. Very tiring progress. It seemed every inch forward meant napping for at least an hour afterward. Kaa-san got a little worried about how often I'd drop off for another hour randomly but Ojii-san reassured her.
"Probably just tapping into her chakra," Oji-san said. "She's a little young for it but it's not unheard of in our clan. Or in the Hatake for that matter."
Our Clan? Kaa-san was from a shinobi clan? I never heard of the Tanaka Clan but that didn't mean they didn't exist. The Clans that appeared in the series were ones that Naruto encountered in some way. Which meant it was mostly ones that had settled in Konoha with a handful from the other Hidden Villages. If a Clan was small and managed to stay out of the main plot, they could easily be unknown to even the most rabid of Naruto fans.
That Tanaka might not be the clan name didn't occur me into I started being able to move my chakra.
Moving it through the pathways to my hands and feet. Then, directing it further away from those trails into the muscles and my lungs. The energy continued to taste primarily like ozone. The tingle in my muscles as the energy touched it like when you built up static energy. Still resonated through my bones like distant thunder. But as I started working with it more, other elements became noticeable. An element that tasted like fresh snow and the burn of winter air in my lungs.
It was rather curious. Kaa-san and Obaa-san's energy felt the same but I could swear that ice wasn't one of the elements….Except for one family. The Yuki Clan. I tried to remember everything about them. There hadn't been much. The only character we met from that bloodline was Haku.
I don't think he knew much since he and his mother had been hiding their bloodline, then his mother had been murdered. By his own father, the poor kid.
If Kaa-san and Obaa-san had connections to the Yuki Clan, I can see them keeping that as quiet as they had been the name of my father. I wasn't entirely certain when the bloodline purges started in the Land of Water but that kind of genocide didn't start overnight. There was always history of tension, periods of build up where the target group was increasingly dehumanized. Lots of propaganda to make people accept the unacceptable.
So even if the bloodline purges hadn't began in earnest, didn't mean it was safe to public about their bloodline. Especially since Kaa-san and Obaa-san didn't seem to have very much shinobi or even samurai training. They obviously had some. The morning exercises that Kaa-san, Obaa-san, and Ojii-san did were clearly katas. But that didn't mean they were dangerous as, for instance, my father is.
Kaa-san might be less afraid if she was…then again, being powerful didn't mean invincible. Even a jonin or kage level opponent could be worn down by enough enemies or a long enough battle. Or make a mistake that proves lethal.
After all, if people are trying to kill you, the odds are in their favor. Because you have to survive every attempt. They only need to succeed once.
This possible revelation of another reason for people to kill me only made me more determined to learn to use my chakra.
I know I shouldn't laugh. But the outraged expression on Izumi's face as I held her braid in my hands was just too funny. Especially when she saw that I was still wearing the bell. It just hadn't made a sound. Or at least not any that she could hear.
Containing my mirth might have been easier if Kaa-san wasn't laughing so hard that she couldn't stand up straight. Every time either of us seemed to be regaining control of ourselves, we'd look at each other and the giggles would start all over again.
It was a few weeks away from my second birthday when I felt confident enough in my control of my chakra to try a little experiment. I didn't know that hand signals well enough, let alone remember what sequence they were supposed to be in, to even attempt a jutsu. But from what I vaguely recalled that one could manifest and manipulate an element in a freeform manner.
I just needed to pick one.
Lightning would be the easiest since I seemed to be lightning-natured. But lightning was dangerous. I could electrocute myself. Someone in my family. Accidentally set the house on fire. That my house was made primarily of wood and paper had me dismissing fire. That left earth, wind, and water.
If my theory about Kaa-san's ancestry was correct, wind and water might be easier for me to use than earth. After some consideration, I opted for water as any resulting mess from out of control water ought to be easier to clean up than the mess from out of control wind.
Afterward, I couldn't tell you why I didn't ask Obaa-san for a glass of water or something like that. She would have given it to me. Instead I decided to try to condense water out of the air. It was humid enough, I reasoned, shouldn't be that hard.
Famous last words.
Blissfully ignorant of the stupidity I was able to engage in, I sat down and prepared to unleash my inner Katara. I focused on the pot in my belly. It was larger now and easily answering my direction to pool into my hands. As I poured more and more chakra into them, a ball began to form in my cupped hands. A ball that glowed brilliant white…I pictured that light being replaced with water. Imagined it condensing into a vapor and coming together…
It was working. I could see droplets beading across the surface of the light ball. Like the morning dew clinging to a spider's web…A little push and the drops were drawn to a single point…It's working! The water drop was tiny but it was—
Pain. Sharp, deep pain in my chest that took my breath away. I barely noticed the water and light spilling out suddenly shaking, numb fingers. My awareness was consumed by the pain spreading from my heart down to stomach, down my limbs…how it burned. The old familiar panic of 'I can't breathe' from Before…
I didn't even register falling. One moment was I was sitting, cold sweat breaking out….the next I was on my side shaking and fighting to breathe. Black spots ate at my vision…
The last thing I saw was Kaa-san running into the room, her eyes wide with terror. The last thing I remembered was the scent of her fear…my fear….
Most of the time I floated in insensibility so total that when I was conscious enough to consider it, I wondered if I had died again. The few moments where I managed to break the surface and be fully awake supported that. My vision was blurred, hearing muffled, mind sluggish. The only thing different was the pain. My chest felt like it was on fire. While an elephant sat on me. It was like every asthma attack Before Me had ever suffered had returned to punish me for spending two nearly years without wheezing.
The pain would soon pull my mind back down into blissful unconsciousness.
Most of those waking moments were brief and virtually identical but a few stood out…
Kaa-san holding me tightly against her chest. The muffled but distinct sound of her heart pounding…the scent of tears and terror heavy in the air…
There was something in my mouth. Soft, tasted like blood and sweat and fish. "Bite down, Miho-chan." Oji-san's voice…when did he get back? He was supposed to be gone all week…"Bite!" He ordered. I bite. Tasted blood and suddenly my body was flooded….and the pain in my chest finally eased…I could breathe again…
Gentle hands holding me, wiping my limp body clean of sweat. Obaa-san's honeysuckle, made sour with fear. The painful hope in the words "You'll be okay, Miho-chan."
Otherwise, those days were a black hole in my memory.
But slowly, painfully, my awareness returned and I could stay awake longer than a few minutes. Could hear something besides my own heartbeat. Could see Kaa-san sitting by my bed, dark circles under her eyes. The tentative relief in her smile as she saw that I was awake. And stay awake long enough to be fed some broth.
"Kaa-san," I said, my squeaky, high voice turned hoarse and croaky. "Sorry…"
"Shh, Miho-chan," Kaa-san said. "It's not your fault. You didn't know any better."
But it was my fault. I did know better. I should have known better than to play around with chakra like that. To know that I didn't know enough about it to experiment safely. What was wrong with me? I lived 30-odd years Before by being cautious. By making careful risk assessments.
Had I done that this time? Not really. I considered which element would be the safest to play with. I never asked if I should be playing the elements in the first place.
'Your scientists were so concerned about whether or not they could do something, they never stopped to think about whether or not they should.'
Well said, Dr. Malcolm.
"Sleep, Miho-chan."
Sleep sounded good. Sensible.
The next day, Oji-san sat by my bedside and we had a very serious conversation about what happened.
Namely that I had given myself chakra exhaustion. Severe chakra exhaustion, that came very close to killing me. Would have killed me if I didn't have some very good luck.(1) My chakra reserves were larger than the average toddler. (2) Oji-san had a special way to treat chakra exhaustion. (3) Izumi borrowed her brother's boat to bring him home early.
Barring any of those, I would be dead. And if by some miracle, I survived, I would have burned out my chakra coils. And once those are gone, they are gone.
All said in a calm, matter of fact voice that said he wasn't angry. He was disappointed.
If his goal was make me feel even more guilty and stupid than I already did, he succeeded. I couldn't stop myself from bursting into tears. Oji-san hugged me and rubbed my back, murmuring soothing nonsense until the tears faded into hiccups.
"Promise me, Miho-chan," Oji-san said. "That you wouldn't try something like that again without first talking to me, Obaa-san, or Kaa-san."
"I promise."
Recovery took days. It was at least another day before my hands stopped shaking enough for me to hold my own cup or bowl. Then another week before I could stand without support. And walking to the bathroom and back to my bed didn't exhaust me.
0 of 10 stars. Absolutely do not recommend it.
It took even longer for Kaa-san to stop watching me like a hawk, terrified the moment I was out of her sight, she'd lose me…Can't say that I blame her. If I had been in her sandals, I'd be just as anxious about a repeat. After all, she didn't know that I was an adult in a child's body. She thought I was a child. A precocious child but still a child who was too young to really understand just how close I had danced with the Reaper.
It made it easier to be patient with Kaa-san turning into Velcro-Mom for a while. And by a while, I mean it was spring before she accepted that I wasn't going to do it again the moment her back was turned.

in CHASING STARS, Sophie is the one to snatch the map [morph] befor Silver could, giving us this little angsty moment. our first proper look at Sophie’s spyglass she inherited from her father. I did my best to make the markings look similar to the ones on the map, but also like elvish runes. I am so happy with how this turned out. The hands were a little tricky, mostly the left hand, but I did it! I love that look of hurt and disappointment on her face. just the look in her eyes that says so much in the span of two seconds. I listened to Set Fire To The Rain and Youth by Daughter while drawing this. I hope y’all like it!
