Here's a commission piece I did for the awesome author Hans_On for her super cool fic "Influence"! It's an actor!Dean/movie producer!Castiel fic, which, as someone who studied and works with film, is freaking fantastic! It's a work in progress, so there will be more chapters (and a few more chibi scenes) to come! Go give the story a read!
I'd also like to take a moment to say how important it is that we support our film and tv show writers and actors who are striking right now for fair pay and working conditions. They deserve to be able to be fairly compensated for the hard work they put into their craft. Please check the WGA and SAG-AFTRA website for more information on how to help and show support!

Do It For A Dollar (au / 1.5k words / college student!cas / actor!dean)
Prompt 18 from my â30 Destiel Promptsâ for @breathingdestiel
ao3 link
The warm heat of the New York summer clings to Castiel as he walks along to his favourite coffee shop. (Itâs his favourite for one simple reason - itâs cheap and heâs a broke college student.)
Despite the air conditioning of the shop welcoming him in when he arrives, Castiel decides to take a seat under the awning outside. As a student, struggling to pay for college, and all the other costs that come with simply being alive, Castiel has to find entertainment in the smaller things in life. One such entertainment is buying a coffee and sitting, just watching people go by.Â
Itâs a beautiful day outside so thereâs plenty of people for Castiel to flit his eyes over as they walk past, going about their days. Heâll likely never see them again and that thought alone fascinates him immensely. The idea that your life can seem so huge and overwhelming and yet thereâs seven billion of them walking around the planet at this moment. Seven billion perspectives.Â
Castielâs eyes follow a bobbing balloon, clutched in the hand of a small child babbling to his mother. As the balloon disappears out of eye shot, Castielâs focus is snapped to what looks like a couple of trailers pulling up and some guys with cameras jumping out. It looks as though theyâre filming something across the street.Â
That was something Castiel had found it odd getting used to about living in New York. There was always some movie or show being filmed around the city. If he didnât see it himself, he always heard about it. Heâs at college to study film after all.Â
He squints against the beating sun, to try to get a better look. People watching is sure to get a whole lot better if the people he is watching are celebrities.Â
A couple of minutes pass and Castiel is starting to lose hope that heâs actually going to see anything before he leaves. Heâs just about to get up from his seat when he chances a glance across the street again.Â
It seems something must be starting as thereâs a rather hyper looking man holding a microphone and talking into a camera. The man must be introducing someone as he suddenly holds out an arm to bring someone into shot.Â
Oh god, itâs Dean Winchester! That man is a legend in film and heâs only thirty. Castiel had been hoping that theyâd study some Deanâs movies and performances in his classes. There is so emotion Dean canât portray with intense accuracy and believability. His latest movie was a heart-wrenching story in which he played a monster hunter who fell in love with his angel best friend, only for them to be ripped away from each other in a scene that left Castiel breathless.Â
The man with the microphone is now shouting things at people on the street, while Dean seems to just be standing next to him. Castiel canât quite make out what the man is saying but members of the public seem to be bewildered and are walking away quickly from the mad man - Castiel canât say he blames them.Â
Both men suddenly pick up the pace, jogging down the street until they stop abruptly and a microphone gets put in another strangersâ face. This person looks confused until they do a double-take and spot Dean. Finally, Castiel thinks, everyone should know who Dean is. The stranger says something that makes Dean throw his head back with a belt of laughter.Â
Gosh, that man is truly beautiful. Castiel doesnât imagine theyâll come over to his side of the street and he is definitely much too nervous to pretend to casually cross the street as if he had no idea what is happening there. Instead, he decides that, if Dean is still around after they finish filming whatever this is, heâll pluck up the courage to go over and say hi. (To brag about it in class tomorrow, if nothing else.)
âWould you kiss Dean Winchester for a dollar?!!?â Castiel hears the hyper manâs voice shout to the next unsuspecting member of the public. He snorts to himself. Thereâs no doubt, he would do a lot more with Dean for a lot less than a dollar, if given the chance.Â
Whatever game the two men seem to be playing carries on for a while longer. Castiel sits and watches them film for a while, plans to leave forgotten in favour of watching Dean.Â
Dean looks like a nice person. When the microphone man shouts at people and even pushes some away, Dean always makes sure to catch them before they leave and give them a hug or handshake. And Castiel canât help it every time Dean laughs, he lets out a little laugh too, though he covers his mouth so the people enjoying their coffee around him donât think heâs strange.Â
Eventually, it looks like filming is winding down. The camera guy drops his camera from his shoulder and walks off back to one of the trailers. Now the spotlight is off him, the mad manâs energy has left him and heâs just taking in quiet tones with Dean. They must be saying goodbye because Dean claps a hand on the guyâs shoulder and shakes his hand before heading towards the trailers too.Â
Castiel drinks the final drops of his coffee and Dean doesnât return. Figuring heâs missed his chance to say hi to Dean (not that heâd have worked up the courage anyway), Castiel picks up his things and throws his coffee cup in the trash. At least, he got to see one of his favourite actors in the flesh, not many people can say that. Plus, he couldnât stay for longer, heâd already spent too much on coffee to keep his seat outside, which wasnât good for his student budget.Â
Compared to the walk to the coffee shop earlier that day, the weather is now cooler under the setting sun and Castiel relishes the reprieve from the heat. His mind begins to wander to other things, mostly his new short film heâs got to work on for school.Â
Just as heâs about to cross at the end of the street, he hears someone shout from behind him.
âWait!âÂ
Castiel frowns and turns to quickly look over his shoulder, though heâs not actually expecting the person to be shouting to him.
Only, when his eyes fall onto the source of the voice, they immediately go wide in shock.Â
Dean Winchester is standing in front of him, green eyes filled with⌠nerves?
âUh,â Dean says, as if he wasnât expecting Castiel to actually turn around, âI noticed you watching us film from across the street. And I guess I just wanted to say that you look cute when youâre laughing. You shouldnât hide it.â
When Castielâs brain finally decides to reboot itself, he replies. âI was only trying to hide it because I didnât want to look like an idiot.âÂ
âIâm sure you could never do that, man.â Dean says, a small smile creeping at the corner of his mouth.Â
Castiel blushes and looks down at the pavement.Â
A comfortable, happy silence falls on them.Â
But then, Castiel frowns when he sees Dean reach into his back pocket. He tilts his head in confusion. The confusion doesnât clear when Dean pulls out a dollar.Â
Castiel gives Dean a questioning look.Â
Dean clears his throat and holds out the dollar to Castiel. âWould you kiss Dean Winchester for a dollar?â
Castiel makes an unattractive snort of laughter at Deanâs gesture. He places his hand over Deanâs and gently pushes it away.Â
âI donât need a dollar to want to kiss you, Dean.â He whispers, finding courage from the kind eyes Dean is showing him. âPlus, itâs a little crowded on this street, and people are starting to watch.â He flicks his eyes around them where some people have started taking their phones out to film Dean Winchester talking to this random guy on the street.Â
Dean deflates slightly under the attention.Â
âBut,â Castiel says and notices Dean brighten up again, âif you wanted to find somewhere more private and, perhaps, put that dollar towards dinner, maybe we could talk a little more about that kiss.âÂ
Deanâs smile could rival the beaming summer sun.Â
*Â *Â *
Two years later, Billy Eichner (turns out shouty microphone guy had a name, who knew?) presents them with a gift at their wedding.Â
Unbeknownst to them until that moment, some of the crew had noticed Dean run after Castiel on the day they met and theyâd filmed what they could from afar.Â
All their guests chuckle when they see Dean try to offer Castiel a dollar to kiss him. Dean groans and hides his face in Castielâs neck. Castiel runs a comforting hand down Deanâs back.Â
âIn your defence, it was incredibly adorable.â Castiel says.Â
âUghâ, Dean groans, âthat doesnât help, Cas.â He lifts his head to look at Castiel in the eyes, pouting like a sulking child.
Castiel smiles at his grumpy husband, and places a soothing kiss to his lips.Â
Yes. He definitely didnât need a dollar to do that for the rest of his life.Â

Prompt: Book Title âOutside the Midnight Hourâ
Word count: 3.1k
Rating: T
Summary: Dean has a chance to be cast in the movie of a lifetime, but itâs down to the author of the filmâs source material to decide if heâs going to get the job or not.
When Deanâs agent calls him, heâs sure that itâs going to be with a rejection. Based on the vibe Dean had gotten in the audition room, the amount of money going into this projectâthereâs no way in hell theyâre going to take him.
After all, this film isnât like any other that Dean has even so much as auditioned for, let alone been a part of. A paranormal, action-based movie with a heavy focus on psychological aspects and themes of self-exploration? With that much going on, itâs going to have to be perfect.
And the director, Cain Mullen, is one of the best in the industry. He wonât accept anything less than perfection, anyway.
Which is why Dean answers his phone with, âAlright, lay it on me. How embarrassed do I have to be for even trying for this thing?â
Thereâs a beat of silence on the other end of the line, and then Charlie asks, âWhat the hell are you talking about?â
Dean slumps down onto his couch, his pout directed up at the ceiling. Itâs a decent apartment in a decent area of LA, but overall, nothing to write home about; being an up and coming actor doesnât quite have the same pizazz to it as being a fully-fledged one does.
If he had just landed this gigâŚ
He sighs into his phone. âBeyond the Midnight Hour. Cain didnât seem all that impressed during my reading, so how bad is it looking? Maybe I should stick to mediocre romcoms and B-list horror stuff.â
Charlie makes a sound of outrage in reply, and when she speaks next, her voice has taken on that unmistakable, I am your agent and that means I know best, mister, attitude. âDean Winchester, you are better than those movies, and one day Iâm going to make you believe it. And guess what! That day is today, so strap in, bucko.â
Dean blinks. Thatâs sounding an awful lot like sheâs sayingâŚ
âStrap in for what, Charlie?â
He can practically hear his agentâs wolfish grin. âYouâve got a meeting, Winchester. A couple people at the studio want to talk to you.â
Dean sits up so quickly that his head spinsâor is that happening anyway? âYou mean Iâ?â
âYouâre one of two choices,â Charlie is quick to cut in, and thereâs the other shoe that Dean knew had to be waiting somewhere. âBut Dean, itâs looking really good. The director and a few producers want to talk to you, maybe run you through some more lines, and then theyâll make their decision.â
Okay. Okay, Dean can handle that. One-on-one with another actor, and if he comes out ahead, he could potentially be the lead of the movie of the year. Should be easy enough. All he has to do is win over the directors and producers. Right?
He takes a deep breath, determination taking root. âAlright, Charlie. Send me the details.â
~
Dean arrives at the studioâs main office only a few hours after Charlieâs call, dressed in his best with his stomach twisted into knots. A receptionist leads him to a conference room that has been set up like an informal get-together space, with the table pushed off to the side of the room and an array of basic snacks and drinks spread across it.
There are only two other people in the room, one of whom Dean recognizes immediately.
Cain appears to be deep in conversation with the roomâs one other occupant, but he looks up when Dean enters, and his face splits into a grin. âAh, Mr. Winchester! Iâm so glad you could join us.â
Cain crosses the room and grabs Deanâs hand for a firm, overexcited handshake. Dean tries his best not to gape like a damn fish the whole time, but he only barely manages to return the handshake by the time Cain moves on.
âI trust your agent explained to you what weâre looking for today,â the director says, a heavy hand now laying on Deanâs shoulder. âOur team is in a dead split between casting you or Michael Godson as our lead, and that means weâve brought it down to our tiebreaker.â
Multiple alarms immediately begin to ring in Deanâs mind. A dead split? Him and Michael Godson? Charlie hadnât made it sound quite so dire, and she definitely hadnât told Dean who his competition wasâthough itâs probably fair that she didnât, because if she had, thereâs no way Dean would have shown up at all.
Michael is a pro with a resume thatâs a hell of a lot better than Deanâs. Dean might have some decent acting chops, but if it comes down to it, in what setting could he ever possibly hope to beat Michael?
He croaks out, feeling slightly faint, âTiebreaker, huh?â
Cain nods, then uses the hand he has on Deanâs shoulder to lead him over to the man he had previously been talking to. The guy has been hovering since Dean arrived, looking awkward in the background, and Dean tries not to look as wary as he feels when they are introduced.
Who is he? A producer? Some random pick from the crew? He definitely doesnât seem confident in this environment, and heâs gorgeous enough that Dean knows he would remember if heâd seen him before. He looks like heâs straight out of every chick flick Dean has ever seen, with his dark, tousled hair and perfect, pink lips.
âDean, this is Castiel Novak. You might know him as his pen name, CJ Novakâhe is the author of the novel Beyond the Midnight Hour is based upon.â
Deanâs mouth goes dry. âOh,â he says without quite meaning to. Heâs heard of CJ Novak. Then, with as much enthusiasm as he can muster and a hand stuck out in Castielâs direction, âItâs great to meet you, man. I didnât realize this was based on a book, but based on how awesome the cut-down screenplay version is looking, you must be an amazing author.â
Castielâs cheeks dust pink, and he belatedly accepts Deanâs offered hand. His palm is smooth and warm against Deanâs own. âThank you, Mr. Winchester. Thatâs very kind of you to say.â
Once the handshake has ended, Dean gives Castiel the most charming smile he can muster. Itâs not as easily managed as he might have liked, with his nerves ratcheting up as quickly as they are, butâheâs pursuing a career in acting for a reason. He can do this.
And Dean isnât an idiot. Cain said they needed a tiebreaker, so who better to make the final decision than the man who created the story thatâs being put to screen? Dean isnât going to resort to flirting or anything so cheap to try to win the author over, but that doesnât mean he canât be as charismatic as possible.
âI really do want to read it,â he says, now that a beat has passed after Castielâs thanks. âHow different isââ
At that moment, thereâs a knock against the conference room door. It swings inward to reveal a pair of unfamiliar faces. âCain?â one of them calls. âCan we steal you for a second?â
âOf course.â Cain smiles at the pair in the doorway, then turns back to Dean and Castiel to clap a hand to each of their shoulders. âIâll be back shortly. Iâll see about rounding up the rest of the producers, too, before Michael arrives. Play nice, you two.â
Cain strides out of the room without a backwards glance. When the door closes behind him, the conference room is thrown into an awkward silence. Dean and Castiel both stare at the door instead of each other. Castiel shifts his weight from one foot to the other; Dean clears his throat. They end up turning to each other at the exact same time.
âWell, I guessââ
âI feel like I should apologizeââ
Each of them cuts off. Deanâs smile turns sheepish, and Castiel presses his lips together in embarrassment.
âUhâsorry.â Dean forces himself to chuckle and rubs uncomfortably at the back of his neck. Smooth, Winchester. âWhat do you want to apologize for?â
âI was going to apologize in advance for being as socially awkward as I am,â Castiel confesses with a chuckle thatâs far more authentic than Deanâs had been. âBut I think I proved myself quickly enough on that matter. Cain promised me he wouldnât leave me alone, and yetâŚâ
Oh. Well. Now Dean feels even more awkward. He tries to push through it. âWell, I canât exactly say anything for Cain ditching you with me, but Iâll try not to make this any harder on you than it has to be. Iâm a chill guy, I promise.â
Castiel squints at him like he doesnât know how to interpret that statement. Deanâs confidence begins to fizzle.
He swallows hard. âAnyways, uh. I know actors tend to be flashy assholes, but thatâs not my style. My little brotherâs a quiet type, too, so believe me when I say thatâs something I can handle. Heâs going through law school right now. Pretty different path than the one Iâm on.â
Castiel tilts his head at that, intrigued. âThose are definitely very different paths,â he agrees. âYour brother wants to serve people, and you want to entertain them. Why?â
Dean shrugs. âJust our lots in life, I guess. Samâs always been a brainiac. Reading, writing, following along with political activist groups. I modelled a bit when I was a teenager, and I followed that line of work to make sure I stayed employed. Moneyâs important when youâre raising a kid sibling as your own.â
âRaising him as your own?â Castiel echoes, but Dean is sure that theyâve already discussed this more than they should. Theyâre not here to talk about him.
Or, well. Maybe they are, in a way. But not like this. His personal drama doesnât mean a damn thing, as far as his career is concerned.
âHow different is Beyond the Midnight Hour the book from Beyond the Midnight Hour the movie?â
âOh. Um.â Castiel clears his throat, but thankfully has the good grace to let the subject be changed. He settles his weight back on his heels as he switches to thinking about a subject heâs actually familiar with. Dean can see how much it relaxes him; the difference in his posture is like night and day. âActually, the novel I wrote is called Outside the Midnight Hour. After the film rights were sold, the studio came to me with the idea of changing it for the movie adaptation. Something about original titles and alphabetic preference, I donât fully remember. I was too happy to be getting a movie to care.â
âOh.â Dean wrinkles his nose without thinking. âYou werenât offended by that? I mean, you must have worked your ass off to write that book, and then after all that, some studio mooks decided to just change the title for their own reasons? The title can be the trickiest part of the whole book, right? That doesnât sound fair.â
Castiel blinks rapidly, then stares at Dean in what seems to be a stunned silence. It takes a while for him for respond, and when he does, thereâs a distant note to his voice. âI⌠I hadnât actually thought about it in those terms. I wasnât offended, but⌠Should I have been?â
Dean shrugs. âI donât know. If you arenât offended, you arenât offended, I donât have any right to tell you how to feel. You seem like a good guy, though, Castielââ
âCas.â
Dean loses his grip on his rant. âWhat?â
Castielâs cheeks have turned pink again. âA lot of my friends call me Cas.â
âOh. Cas. Okay.â Deanâs face feels a bit warmer than usual now, too, becauseâis it just him, or does that make it sound like the two of them are becoming friends? Maybe itâs a bit too early for them to actually be at that point, but if nothing else, itâs definitely an invitation.
He clears his throat and makes an effort to remember what it was he had been saying. âUmâanyway. If youâre not offended about the title thing, thatâs fine. I probably shouldnât be saying shit that might pit you against the studio, anyway. Not if I want this job.â
âIâve already signed my contracts,â Cas says, waving his hand in a vague gesture. âI canât be turned against anyone. But your perspective is⌠interesting.â He assesses Dean for a moment, then asks, âIf I were to tell you that I was offended by the change in title. What would you do about it?â
The answer to that is an easy one. Dean knows what he would do without a second of hesitation. And, even though he swears he can hear Charlieâs voice in the back of his mind telling him that itâs a bad idea, he gives that answer to Cas.
âIf you werenât into it, I wouldnât do this movie. I know I already said this, but the screenplay is fucking incredible. You created a great story with great characters. If this movie didnât respect your vision and earn your support, I wouldnât want to support it, either.â
Casâ expression goes slack with the force of his surprise. Dean canât blame him for the reaction; heâs sure itâs not what Michael would have said.
(Dean has never met the guy, but he seems like a stuck-up prick, so he doesnât exactly have any desire to. He knows enough from interviews and general gossip, thanks.)
âWhy would you give up this film?â Cas asksâdemands, really. Once he gets a grip on his surprise, he verges on being angry. âI know your work history, so I know this project is a huge opportunity for you. You told me that you started acting with the hopes of supporting your brother. This would be a better paycheck than any you have ever seen, which could help both of you. So why the hell would my opinion of something as inane as the title convince you to give up your chance?â
âWell⌠not just the title..â Maybe his logic doesnât feel quite as sound now that Cas has thrown it back at him like that, but that doesnât mean Dean is going to change his mind. âItâs your story. Iâm just some guy who might be allowed to act it out. One of those things is way more important than the other.â
Cas reels back slightly. âDean Winchester,â he starts to say, but for a long moment, nothing follows it. Dean waits, feeling uneasy (and definitely like he has blown his chance and used this alone time with Cas all wrong).
Then Cas finishes, âDean Winchester, you are phenomenal.â In the same breath, he turns his head toward the conference room door and shouts, âCain?â
It only takes a handful of seconds for Cain to appear, opening the door and strolling through it without a care in the world. Thereâs no one with him, Michael or otherwise. Dean frowns.
âAny thoughts, Castiel?â Cain asks, casting a cautious look in Deanâs direction. Cas is quick to answer him, though, redrawing his attention completely.
âDean is the one. I would like him to have the role over Michael.â
Deanâs has just about hits the floor. He turns to Cas, abruptly feeling dizzy and certainly not understanding what the hell is happening. âWhat? But I⌠I havenât even been in the same room as him, yet. Why would you pick me? I mean, his name aloneââ
Cas cuts him off with a shake of his head. âI already spoke with Michael earlier in the day. When he thought he had a few, secret minutes alone with me, he spent his time trying to impress me with his reputation and connections. He flat-out offered to introduce me to my favorite actor if he was given the part.â
Dean blinks. âAnd you didnât want to take him up on that?â
Cas shakes his head and graces Dean with a small, secret kind of smile. âI think I have a new favorite actor now, anyway. And heâs much kinder. He cares about the work itself instead of just getting the job. Better looking, too, if Iâm being honest.â
Cain muffles a chuckle behind his hand. Dean stares up at him in surprise; Cas is so absorbing that Dean already managed to forget that he came back into the room. And when he does look up, the director offers Dean his hand. âIâm looking forward to working with you, Dean. Iâll make sure everything youâll need to look through gets sent along to your agent.â
âIââ Dean swallows hard. Heâs dangerously close to getting choked up, but he eagerly shakes Cainâs hand nonetheless. âThank you, sir. Iâm looking forward to working with you, too. I appreciate this opportunity.â
There. Charlie would be proud of him for that line.
Dean can sense that the meeting (or ambush, really, since thatâs what it turned out to be) is going to come to an end now that the casting decision has been declared. Part of him feels like he should keep his mouth shut and let that happen, not push his luck, but as soon as Cas starts to walk away from him, presumably toward the door, something like panic grips at Dean, and he instinctively reaches after him.
âHey Cas, wait upââ Dean leaves Cain Mullen behind in favor of catching Castiel Novak by his elbow. Cas is slow to turn around to look at him, and when he does, his blue eyes have gone round with surprise. And god, with a face like that, how is this guy just the brains behind the story? Itâs almost ridiculous.
Nerves bubble through Dean, and he gently releases Casâ elbow. Neither of them moves to put any additional space between them, though.
âI was just, uh. I was wondering.â Shit, when did Dean become so bad at this? âDo you want to maybe⌠grab coffee? Or something? You know, new favorite actor to new favorite author? You never did tell me how different Outside the Midnight Hour is from its movie adaptation.â
Cas stares at him. âI suppose I didnât,â he concedes. Then, after a moment of deliberation, a smile steadily stretches across his features, lighting him up. âFavorite actor to favorite author, you say?â
Dean feigns a casual shrug. âKinder and better looking than any other author I know.â
Itâs right then that Dean learns that, when Cas smiles widely enough, his nose and eyes wrinkle with it. He already loves the look of it, even before it turns out to accompany the words, âI would very much like to get coffee with you.â
Summary:Â Up-and-coming movie actor Castiel Novak knows he'll never be taken seriously if all he ever plays is betas, and as an alpha he certainly doesn't think it's a wise career choice to play an omega. However, when he's offered the omega role in a gay romance and learns that the much more famous (and his crush) Dean Winchester is playing the alpha, Cas decides maybe it's time to take a risk. But when they meet on day one, Cas isn't sure what to make of Dean's scent.
Comments: 9/10. This is an amazing fic. Thereâs angst and smut and pining and fluff and domesticity. Dean is an incredibly famous actor, but heâs actually an omega masquerading as a straight beta. They struggle with Dean being in the closet, secret relationships, pining and jealousy and being possessive. Cas is also a little asexual, while Dean is aromantic.

Summary:
Environmental rights activist Castiel Novak may not have grown up on the Plains, but he has thrown himself into protecting and conserving South Dakotaâs natural treasures as if he was a native. When Dean Winchester, Hollywoodâs modern day John Wayne, comes to South Dakota to film his next movie, Cas is more focused on preventing the environmental damage Deanâs movies cause than hoping for a chance to meet him. After Cas makes some negative comments on social media about the actorâs authenticity as a cowboy, he is invited to spend a week alone with the star, roughing it in the wilderness. Cas sets out to prove exactly how fake Dean Winchester really is, but he isnât expecting to find out that Dean is a troubled man running from a past that is just as difficult as his own.
Basically: Cas insults Dean and they start fighting like children. When they meet though, sparks fly. Really enjoyed this story! If you have the time, read this bad boy!

Not like there arenât other things Iâm supposed to be working on right now, but this popped into my head and wouldnât leave till I wrote it. Total flashfic, unedited, and I have no idea if Iâm continuing it or not. Although I kinda want to see how Cas is doing with all this....
ETA posted in its entirety on AO3
Dozens of overlapping voices shouted at Dean, each one asking a variation on the same question. Camera flashes left stark afterimages in his vision against the oncoming dusk, but he just kept quiet, smiling affably and waiting until the horde of reporters calmed down enough to let him answer. He may have been caught unaware by Charlie's phone call at 3AM letting him know that someone had leaked pictures of Benny and him and that the internet was already on full alert, he may have spent the day in closed door strategy meetings with the studio and distributors for his coming film that had him gritting his teeth as his private life was discussed in terms of profit margins and marketability, he may have spent two miserable hours being coached on how to present his 'new' self to the media, but he'd be damned if he let the vultures set the pace here.
Finally, they realized he wasn't going to give them anything if they kept at it, and the noise level died to a dull roar. Looking over the choices, he nodded at Becky Rosen. Annoyingly peppy and somewhat bizarrely obsessed with Sam, she still was usually in Dean's corner and could be counted on to lean toward the underdog in any given story.
"Are you gay, Dean?" she asked, pen poised over her notepad.
He chuckled easily (no need to give away that he'd been visualizing this exact moment for most of the day, planning the best way to play it). "Oh, is that why we're all here? I thought I'd won something."
Eyerolls, shrugs, grins, a couple of laughs. Not bad. Behind the crowd of reporters, he could see Sam and Charlie, all supportive smiles and thumbs up. He took a deep breath. That was all he needed. He'd made himself a promise after that first disastrous year in Hollywood -- he'd walk away from it all in a heartbeat if it meant betraying himself or losing Sammy's respect. Somehow, Charlie had wormed her way into that equation as well. He smiled at them.
"I'm not gay." The shouting started again and he held his hands up. As soon as the volume dropped a couple decibels, he continued. "I'm bisexual."
There was a smattering of cheers, some groans; he could swear he saw money being exchanged.
"What was the bet?" he asked. "That I was straight, or that I was gay?"
"Yes!"
"Well, you were all wrong. Next question."
"Are you dating Benny Lafitte?"
His laugh was genuine for that one. "Have any of you actually looked at the picture? I mean, I know I've aged well, but that was from ten years ago." Too many of them looked disgruntled at not being able to write about Benny cheating on Andrea. They probably would anyway; Dean had to literally bite his tongue to not bark at them. "Next?"
"Why were you hiding your sexuality? Are you ashamed?"
"Nope. Just like my privacy. Don't tend to put anyway I date front and center in front of you guys."
"Who's Castiel Novak?"
Dean froze, automatically pulling up his media smile. He could not have possibly heard what he thought he'd just heard. He cleared his throat, trying to loosen the sudden weight in his chest. "I'm not going to answer that right now."
"When will you talk about him, Dean?"
"Wasn't he your first love?"
"Who dumped who?"
The questions came loud and fast. He blinked at the sudden uptick of camera flash. "I'm not ... " This was wrong. The questions were supposed to be about him, or him and Benny, not about ... He couldn't make out the questions anymore, everything coalesced into whirling white noise inside his head. Then Charlie was standing next to him, surreptitiously squeezing his hand as she graced the reporters with a big, open, slightly regretful smile.
"Sorry, folks, but we've got to get Dean moving along. Keep an eye on his Twitter and Facebook over the next few days for more info. In the meantime, I'm sure you all have enough to run with."
Sam's hand closed around Dean's arm, tugging gently. With one last plastic smile, Dean let himself be led back into the hotel lobby, as Charlie struggled to be heard over the crowd. "Just try to be respectful of everyone involved, okay?"
She joined Dean and Sam just as the elevator doors opened and they stepped in, away from the the hotel staff pointedly not watching. Dean leaned against the back wall and let his head fall back with a thunk. Charlie exchanged a look with Sam.
"Well, that could have gone better," she said.
"You think?" Dean growled. "How the fuck did they find out about Cas, Charlie?"
"Dean, it's not her fault."
"This isn't 1984, Dean. I can't just make something not have happened because you say so."
"Yeah, I get that. But the story broke less than 24 hours ago. How did they dig that up? It was ... years ago."
"I don't know, Dean. Someone talked to someone who knew you two, they went back to Lawrence, they found an old yearbook. If someone's looking, the trail's a mile wide. Honestly, I'm actually kinda surprised it hasn't happened before now."
The doors opened and they headed down the hall to Dean's suite. Charlie and Sam winced as Dean headed straight to the minibar. He settled on the couch with three small bottles of liquor and was draining the first one by the time Sam sat down next to him.
"But, speaking of Cas ... "
"We're not."
"Dean," Charlie perched on the arm of the couch. "Maybe you're not, but they are. They know his name, it won't take long to figure out where he lives if they don't already know. They'll be asking him questions, and ...."
"Let him say whatever he wants."
"He could say some pretty damning stuff, Dean."
"Nothin' that's not true," Dean muttered. "I deserve whatever he throws at me." He tossed the empty bottle and started on the next one.
"Okay, but still, maybe you should give him a heads up that he's about to be national news?" Charlie offered quietly.
"Call 'im if you want." Dean pushed up from the couch and headed to his bedroom, detouring to grab as many bottles from the bar as he could carry. "And get this restocked, would you?"
"Nope."
He tried to glare at Sam, but couldn't. The kid was only looking out for him. He'd lived through the fallout of the whole Cas debacle in real time. Dean sighed. "All right, Sammy. But just, just give me tonight okay?"
"You made a mistake, Dean. You were a kid."
"I was 19, Sam. And it was a whole mess of mistakes. And Cas was the one who got hurt." The memory of stunned blue eyes, the brief moment of confusion before realization and hurt set in, where time was suspended just long enough for Dean to wish desperately that he could go back and relive those months away from Cas, be a better man. But he couldn't and he wasn't.
Sam eyed the bottles in Dean's hands. "I think both of you got plenty hurt."
"Yeah, whatever, Dr. Phil." Dean closed the bedroom door firmly behind him. He lined the bottles up on the nightstand, threw himself onto the bed, and proceeded to try to forget.

When television star Dean Winchester makes a stop at the Rogue Wave Cafe, owner Castiel Novak initially takes notice - and exception to - the celebrity's presence in the all-but-forgotten beachside town where the age of the average resident is sixty-five.
This is a story about love and love, about family, friends, and more than friends, about learning when to hold on and when to let go, and about maybe, finding some turtles along the way.
Fics that are written as love letters to certain places will always have a special place in my heart, and this fic is no different. The author takes such care in describing the small beach town where Castiel lives and works that you'll honestly feel like you're there as well (and you might even end up a little angry that you can't actually get a cup of coffee at the Rogue Wave Cafe). It's so clear throughout the story that Cas fits in perfectly in this town, and it's also made equally clear that Dean fits into this community just as easily.
Unfortunately, the road to happiness for Dean and Cas is bumpy--Dean is a mid-level actor, made famous for his starring role on a TV series, The Unnatural (sound familiar?). When he meets Cas, there's an instant attraction, but fear of ruining his career by coming out forces Dean to keep his relationship with Cas a secret--which causes friction with Cas, who's determined not to compromise any of his values. Both Dean and Cas make mistakes and hurt each other, but the love between them is always enough to make sure that they come back to each other.
There's a fantastic supporting cast in this story, including Sam and Gabriel as the respective cheerleader brothers. What really makes this story fun to me is the sweet mood that it maintains throughout--even at its angstiest moments, you never really doubt that Dean and Cas are going to find their way back to each other--their connection is just THAT profound.
