Dean Winchester didn't ask for this. Sure, he tries to use his alpha privilege (and hefty bank account balance) to do some good in the world. He works with Bobby, Ellen, and Jody at The Roadhouse, a centre for rescued omegas, but even there, he stays behind the scenes. He pays the bills and helps maintain the property, but other than that, he tries to keep his fingers out of any pies that aren't intended for his cakehole.
That is, until one day when Charlie informs him of one of the worst abuse cases they've ever seen, and tells him that they need to act now if they want to save the guy's life.
Dean's got no problem approving the intake, but then Charlie drops the other shoe like it's hot: The Roadhouse is at capacity and there's simply nowhere for the poor omega to go, but word on the street is that Dean's got a empty guest room, and wasn't he just saying that the house was too quiet since Sam moved out, anyway?
This is a story of hurt and healing, secret identities, righting old wrongs, and finding light on even the darkest of days.
Find a cozy spot, grab some popcorn, or tea, definitely some tissues because we are in for one helluva ride. (You saw the word count, right?) Honestly, this is one of my favorite slave fics, especially since the roles are reversed - Dean is not only an Alpha, but also the protector, unable to control his instincts to safeguard. He is still Dean, though, still awkward when it comes to uncomfortable situations, but with his heart on his sleeve. He would do anything for a stranger, much less for a slave he knew suffered needlessly in this cruel world.
Castiel, on the other hand, is an Omega, but also a (former)slave who needs to re-learn how to function in a world where he is not meant to be free. But first, he needs to understand that he isn't really a slave anymore, not by the regular standards. At first, he is timid and scared, not sure what is expected of him, but as more time passes and all his 'mistakes' go unpunished, he slowly lets himself breathe. Not always, not all the time.
The story wouldn't be complete without some miscommunication and Dean being an idiot, of course. I would call it even idiots in love at some point, but that wouldn't be fair to Castiel. He is just too precious, getting out of a trauma that has marked him for life.
Now, many other goodies are awaiting you when you embark on this journey, things I won't reveal, just sit back and enjoy the ride. Because I know lily's work. It will absolutely wreck you. Don't take my word for it. Go, read. You'll see. I promise it will be worth it!
