Sarah grew up an athlete, running throughout most of her life. A number of years ago, Sarah was diagnosed with a debilitating motor neuron disease called PLS that left her unable to do the thing she loved so much. With some improvement in her motor control over the last few years, Sarah has been able to incorporate yoga and stationary bike into her daily routine. But Sarah missed the camaraderie and push she had gotten from her running community. Prompted by her brother and looking for something that would get her out of her basement and off her bike, she started doing some research into CrossFit for adaptive athletes. About 5 months ago, we were lucky enough to have Sarah walk through our doors. Over these last 5 months, we’ve worked with Sarah and watched her tap into her inner CrossFit athlete. Starting from only dumbbells and seated work, Sarah can now do full squat cleans, power snatches, box step-ups and so much more. She is currently signed up and doing all of the CrossFit Open. Her dedication and determination to continually push herself and go beyond all limits and expectations motivates everyone around her. This Open has been much different from the rest. My performance this year hasn’t reflected my dedication to my conditioning and fitness. What it has shown is my dedication to better movement patterns and pain free exercise. Last year I couldn’t even do the workouts and 12 months later I’m proud to say I’m (mainly) pain free.
