They should make a monster hunter spin off game series where you play as a handler. You do a lot of ecological study and you can unlock new moves and equipment by observing specific behaviors in the local monster population. You can’t handle fights head on the way a hunter can so you have to utilize the environment and your understanding of the monsters’ blind spots to get out of hairy situations. you have to draw the monsters you encounter in order to have images of them in your encyclopedia, and the in game encyclopedia uses your drawings as the cover images for the monsters. and you can also work with your unit’s chef Palico to manage suppers, like if you’re heading into a cold region to fight a lightning monster, it would be good to make a warming stew that grants your hunter lightning resistance. And your hunter can get injured and you can gather material for medicine for them. And your hunter is gay. #Happy Pride Month

I really love the hunter / handler dynamic in monster hunter so I’m pleased they managed to pull one off in a way that convinced the player base that having a poindexter that can’t even fight following you around and telling your shredded hunter behemoth self what you’re allowed to do can actually feel really awesome. Like others say Alma isn’t really your personal assistant, you’re more like her bodyguard. It’s her mission and she asked the guild to assign you to her. Yet everyone praises this and you don’t see the droves of “I don’t get to drive the plot, I’m just a tool to these NPCs’ interests” you see in so many other video game stories. It’s a kind of witchcraft to me how they somehow managed to pull it off so you get 700 upvote posts that are like I properly felt like a tool the guild throws at its problems this game, it was awesome.

So as it turns out your sense of self doesnt exist in a vacuum. You gotta actually use it and bounce it off of other people like echolocation to see where you are as a person and shit. So if you dont regularly interact with other people the echoes just get weaker and weaker and before you know it your personality is a blurry fucked up fog clone of its former self. which it sucks because this makes it really hard to interact with people again but yknow
