I'm curious too, about the drive towards one or the other. If youre a 1-2, what makes you seek out fanfic? If youre a 4-5, what makes you seek out original fiction?

#it fluctuates so much that it’s hard to say but I think on average I must circle the middle #I have weeks where I’ll read only fanfic and can’t get into a single original book #and then I’ll start a book that scratches the right itch and suddenly I’m reading three books a week and forget my ao3 log in #hard to estimate the proportion on each case but I think over a year it must be half and half ish #but like. did I just get into a new canon? that’ll skew towards fanfic.#am I on holiday? that’ll skew towards original fiction (or non fiction but that’s a different topic altogether)#and then there’s the audiobook vs podfic thing but #honestly… probably same half and half for the most part #and THEN there’s the writing #which. well I’ve not been writing this year mostly but these past 2? ish years have been super skewed towards fic #but I thiiiink writing wise it makes sense bc fic lets me put aside the stuff I find difficult #and lets me do just. 10k of character study #which. yes you can do that in og fic if you want but if you really want to build solid og fic there are a lot of other pieces you need too #this is interesting though I’m gonna go trawl the notes to see what people are saying
