honestly think i think the heatriv books captivate me so deeply BECAUSE they're so bad. there's this specific tension that occurs where reid wants to imply something for trope or plot reasons, but then realizes it's a real life thing that is not exclusively just Sexy, which makes it too complicated for the book, so she pulls it back, often within the same sentence. so you have this absurd whiplash effect where everything is so important and deep and serious and also simultaneously just kidding it's none of those things. and this extends to the big issues like how she treats race and homophobia, but then also it extends down into how she deals with individual character beats like shane's eating disorder which he has until no he doesn't, or ilya being suicidal until he gets that fuckass dog. like okay this sentence is a perfect example:
