DND HOT TAKES since it’s 2 am and I am avoiding bed:
If you’re not tracking hit points as a DM because you think it’s more fun to simply wait for a narratively significant time for the BBEG to die, you need to find a new system that functions the way you want it to (said as a 5e Truther). Not tracking HP for your monsters is disrespectful to your players and the work they put into making meaningful choices for their characters on both an RP and a mechanical level. If no one in your party wants to be tracking HP then there’s different systems for you out there.
I am lowkey anti Rule of Cool as I see it presented in some groups online. DnD 5e is awesome for what it does (high fantasy adventures where you fight the monsters) and I love it for that. People that try to Rule of Cool their way away from the rules of dnd are doing themselves a disservice. The limits are there to make you more creative and keep everyone on the same playing field where every player knows EXACTLY what the boundaries of their abilities are. Limits are GOOD things for creativity, not bad.
Be nice to your DMs and their characters. If you take the NPCs seriously then YOUR character gets to feel like they’re doing something serious in the world AUTOMATICALLY by virtue of the fact that you recognize where the pressure points of the universe are
