My first impression of the Willy Wonka Competition Netflix is releasing
So Netflix released the trailer to their Willy Wonka competition series and there are no golden tickets with what I am about to say about this ABOMINATION!
I would like to start this off with stating that I am a big fan of Roald Dahl’s works while not condoning some of the things he said that have caused controversy in recent years. I have a lot of his children’s books if not all of them and I have collected a few ghost written ones (but none of those ghost written books that tweak the story like that one they did of The Twits. I have seen a lot of the adaptions of his books in some form or another (I was a kid in the 2000s so some of these viewings came from “The High Sea”) and I even have a good bit of the merchandise Roald’s estate has put out. My parents even treated me to a chocolatier workshop at a chocolate factory for my 15th birthday 10 years ago this coming August and they even gave out golden tickets as souvenirs. I was in my element a few months ago when Taika Waititi and Kit Connor were announced to be starring in an upcoming film inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that will see Willy Wonka return to the public eye after turning a kid (50/50 chance it’s Violet Beauregard like in the book) because people kept wondering why the sequel story to Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator is being ignored. I told The App Formerly Known As Twitter that its because of how Roald Dahl hated the Gene Wilder adaption SO MUCH that made a vow and wrote in his will that no one is allowed to adapt it. Oddly enough, there was an audio book disk or 2 put out by Roald Dahl’s estate that had the narration cut out in favour of just the dialogue and special effects so it was like an audio play rather than a traditional audio book. I also dislike the fact that in 2023, there were sanitised versions of the stories put out for “modern audiences” when a simple product of their time disclaimer on the original versions would’ve been a lot better instead. Yes, Roald Dahl wasn’t the nicest person to be around but for Pete’s sakes, it was unnecessary to pull that stunt when David Walliams’ books don’t have sanitised versions of the stories (even if one tale from the first World’s Worst Childrens book was removed over racist stereotypes) or even product of their time disclaimers in them. I have read and listened to some of his books and there barely any kind of Dahl-like essence to them despite the “New Roald Dahl” praises he got when HarperCollins allowed him to roam free until late last year when he was booted by them. They just seem to be bland with very few tolerable parts.
One of the biggest complaints in regard to this competition is that Netflix decided to waste precious drinking water and hike up electricity bills in the name of recreating the late Gene Wilder’s voice for the show. It is flipping ghoulish of them and I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be something the executives at Netflix came up with and deemed “more appropriate” than perhaps using a voice actor to do an impression of Gene Wilder instead. With Ford re-hiring engineers after their big AI switch ended up being a bust and SORA AI video creator having been shut down earlier this year, this choice is now coming off as late to the party. I get that this was done while AI was still at its unfortunate peak but regardless when this idea was chosen and enacted, it is still flipping ghoulish. I don’t think Gene Wilder’s estate would approve of this, especially since his nephew and his long since estranged adopted daughter now have to hear that soulless AI creation of their loved one’s voice whenever Netlfix advertises this CASH GRAB! Yes, that’s what this is. A hot steaming cash grab that aims to distort the original story for profit gain and rage-baiting Gene Wilder’s estate. Hope that lawsuit from Gene Wilder’s estate ends up being worth it, Netflix.
Like I have said at the end of the aforementioned paragraph, I see this as nothing more than a big “let’s distort the original book’s meaning in the name of a profit” cash grab. I am not the only one to say this but there was a reason why Charlie Bucket won instead of the other four kids Willy Wonka invited to the factory and it’s one that some senseless Netflix executive has decided to ignore just so they can have a new yacht that an orca will surely wreck. The whole point to Charlie Bucket winning the factory was that he wasn’t greedy, he didn’t parade his own talents as the reason why he should do or should have something in his possession, he observed what should be left alone from afar (squirrels in the book and the 2005 film adaption/ geese in the 1971 film adaption) and he wasn’t lazy and snobbish when it came to Wonka-Vision. He was exhibiting the Seven Heavenly Virtues (even if Roald didn’t explicitly state that as his views on religion did change with tragedies in the Dahl family) while the four other kids were showing off how irresponsible they would be to run a chocolate factory. I can’t see any of the competition’s “winners” being as humble and down to earth as Charlie Bucket on a natural and genuine level. All I can see from the trailer is a free-for-all waiting to happen in an episode of the show with barely any kind of way of censoring the WORST PARTS OF IT! This will get messy and even though Saturday Night Live has already parodied Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with their Monty McTreats & The Pastry Bakery sketch (you probably saw the Dough-Dee Dees who were surrendering in some of the most black comedy ways possible via TikTok and Instagram with barely any context) but I this cash-grab is just ASKING for it to be parodied by them. The musical has handled the story and its message better than this even with some departures from the original source material.
The only good thing that this is that the sets look SO GOOD! Like, can these be reused after the cash grab gets cancelled by Roald Dahl’s estate for an officially licensed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory immersive experience (even if the egg room gets swapped out for a nut room of some sort to be book accurate with fake nuts to avoid any allergic reactions)? I have been hoping for one after the Glasgow Willy Wonka scamvention from 2024 which was the talk of the family table at my dad and his nephew (who is also my godfather)’s joint-birthday party (they were born on the same day 34 years apart).
The show comes out in the Autumn/ Fall so I will probably end up updating this as more clips show up.
UPDATE 16:46 Irish Summer Time 1st July 2026: GENE'S ESTATE AND HIS WIDOW APPROVED OF THE AI VOICE! I AM SHOCKED AND APPAULLED! Despite that new bit of information, the AI recreation still sounds like your average AI Male voice just with a Gene Wilder costume.

Wonka’s Hottest Invention: A removed chapter
Excerpt from Roald Dahl Fans:
“The chapter hints at a number of differences from the published version of the novel. For example, Mrs. Bucket has accompanied Charlie to the factory rather than Grandpa Joe. There were originally ten recipients of Golden Tickets, and at this point in the story, five are gone and five remain (including Charlie). Dahl hadn’t yet come up with the concept of Oompa-Loompas, and the chapter refers to “men” as his workers and assistants
The description of “THE WARMING-CANDY ROOM” and the machine that produces it are very similar to the Great Gum Machine, and it’s clear that Dahl used this chapter as a basis for Violet’s adventure. The machine produces candy that will keep the eater warm on a cold day. Three boys – Clarence Crump, Bertie Upside, and Terence Roper – all eat handfuls of the candy in an attempt to prove Mr. Wonka wrong, and all overheat and are taken off to spend some time in a refrigerator”.
If I could print out that scan, I could add it to my Roald Dahl collection!
Is that TinTin picture of him covered in polyester in reference to one of the comics or did you just make it yourself? Also, WHY MAKE SOMETHING SO SAD!? D:
AHHHHHHHHHH Okay, we’re going into Tintin ending spoilers here, but since Tintin’s a series originating from the 1920s, I’ll go ahead…
That drawing I did is indeed a reference to one of the Tintin albums, Tintin and Alph-Art.
Tintin and Alph-Art is the last (24th) book in the Tintin series. In it, Tintin discovers a major art forgery operation and goes off with Captain Haddock and Snowy to investigate.
Unfortunately, Tintin gets separated from Haddock and then kidnapped. The main villain tells Tintin that they’ll kill him by covering him in liquid polyester and then sell him as a piece of modern art! (“César” referring to the name of the sculptor who they’ll claim made the “Tintin statue.”)
Think about how horrible a death that would be. He’d be turned into a statue, with no one knowing that his body’s trapped inside.
They lock Tintin in a cell, planning on killing him the next morning. However, Tintin’s able to sneak Snowy out through a window, along with an SOS note telling Haddock where he is.
Unfortunately, the sun comes up, and the villains come back for Tintin before Snowy or Haddock can. The very last panel of the book shows a very poignant image of Tintin being lead out at gunpoint:
Translation: “Come on, it’s time to turn you into a César…”
Unfortunately, Hergé passed away before he could finish it. Even in interviews, he said that he really didn’t know where the story was going to go, so he couldn’t explain what the ending was going to be.
The album was eventually published in its unfinished form in 1986. This is why a lot of the art is so rough, and why the animated Nelvana series never adapted that particular Tintin story.
Several artists have made fan comics where they tried to piece together what the ending may have been. These books can be found here and there around the internet as PDFs:
In some of these versions, Tintin makes it out okay, in others, he doesn’t.
Hergé’s unintentional ending is kind of beautiful in its own way. It’s completely ambiguous and demands the reader to draw their own conclusion using what they already know about the story and its characters. In a way, it’s like the famous endings to The Lady or the Tiger, The Little Prince, or even the film Inception.
So why did I draw it? I guess because even after re-reading that book, I still haven’t really found any online discussions on this. It’s a big unsolved mystery, and I keep thinking, Does Tintin live or die?!
And because I like toying with hearts. Including my own.
FINALLY SOME LUKA(NETTE) INSTAGRAM CONTENT
So it’s already the French “great holidays”? I thought the show should be during a school year.
the Great holidays are in July and August (yes two whole months) and between two school years. A school year started in early September and ends in June (in May for high school and universities because the exams take place in June)
Was writing an assassination attempt one shot but I had to leave before I finished it sooo yall are getting short angst bc I’m bored and hungry and on the tube (hell)
For a few months in the beginning of Innocent XIV’s papacy, those around him spend hours trying to make him get new shoes. They start off trying to make him wear the dress shoes that the pope is supposed to wear with his cassock, but give up on that idea fairly quickly after Vincent starts literally leaving the room when the idea is brought up.
Instead they move on to trying to convince Vincent to at least get a new pair of sneakers - they’ll even let him get the very same model he has right now because Vincent your shoes are literally falling apart, you’re going to trip and fall if you keep wearing them.
Vincent keeps refusing. No one understands why. They offer to get him specialized shoes if it’s a problem with how new shoes feel. They beg Vincent to please just tell them what will make him get new shoes. Vincent keeps shaking his head.
Tedesco, who has eyes and ears everywhere, suggests hiding the Holy Father’s converse. They dismiss him at first, but after Vincent trips on the broken soles of his shoes and very tumbles down the stairs in the Santa Martha, Aldo sneaks into the Pope’s room late at night and brings the shoes to his office, leaving a new pair of shoes in their place.
As he waits for the Holy Father to wake up and notice what has happened, he studies the shoes. Their soles are close to falling off, the fabric has torn in multiple places, and there are dark stains all over them.
At 4 am, Aldo startles awake from where he’s dozed off at his desk. His phone is ringing. One of the night guards station outside Vincent’s room is calling him, apparently they’d called Thomas first, but the other man didn’t know how to help. “The holy father is inconsolable,” the guard says “he keeps asking for shoes.”
Aldo arrives in Vincent’s room minutes later, out of breath from the jog, tattered converse in hand. Vincent is in his pyjamas, his hair messy and his eyes red and full of tears. He’s frantically opening closets and drawers, muttering silently to himself. Thomas stands in a corner, fear evident on his face.
Vincent is reunited with his shoes. When Aldo hands them over, Vincent takes them and holds them close, cradling the dirty shoes as if they were a child.
“I’m sorry.” Vincent says later. “I know they’re just shoes.”
They’re sitting together on the couch in Vincent’s room. Three cups of tea standing untouched on the table.
“I haven’t told you everything about the car bombing.” He draws a breath, closing his eyes tightly.
“I wasn’t alone that day. My colleague - my friend. We were walking together. He was in front of me. The reason I survived was because his body shielded mine. He died instantly.”
Thomas grabs Vincent’s hand, squeezing it. Aldo grabs his cross.
“I was wearing these shoes. His blood in the fabric is the only thing I have left of him.”

ig comics have something that we need more of, and that's Gadget and Quimby on cases together. Also Quimby in his hat :)
Worthy mention that it's canon that Chief thinks Gadget only pretends to be stupid (oh you poor oblivious man...), which makes me believe he thinks very highly of the Inspector. Just something to think about yknow? And also Gadget carrying him ❤
Also-also Local Fruity Police Bf lets his Autistic Cyborg Detective Bf infodump
