On one of my solo trips in the early year 1980s, I went on a hike in the beautiful meadows of Kodaikanal hills, located in Tamilnadu, South India
As a regular to this terrain, many locals were my acquaintances and I usually accompany a local guide while on a hike or trek
On this hike, I skipped the guide service under the assumption that I was conversant with the topography and that turned out to be a blundering mistake
I duly got lost and the panic of wandering amidst the wilderness did put me down for a while
I collected myself, sat down on a small boulder and began to enjoy the surroundings, 10 minutes later my mind calmed down, I was able to focus on the situation
I checked the four E W N S directions, realized that my start point was towards the north whereas I had drifted in the westerly direction
Simple arithmetic on the number of steps that I would have covered in the past hour gave clarity on the distance that needs to be reverse trekked
Few of the landmarks that I had registered in my mind during the forward trek reassured me that I was on the right track
Exactly an hour later I reached the starting point without any incidents
Now let's analyse this episode -
👉 Skipping the local guide service was a blunder
👉 Hiking minus the compass was stupidity
👉 Checking the terrain before stepping further would have saved the precious time
👉 Not giving room for panicking was the turning point
👉 Enjoying the scenery (natures beauty) was a good move which calmed the mind
👉 Identifying the directions based on my body shadow was timely
👉 Remembering the landmarks en route was wise
Last but not least ‘self-trust, self-belief, self-reliance and self-motivation were the key factors that helped to regain the lost ground
The situations in our life journey, when addressed with the qualities listed under the 8th point, are the ones that gain the confidence in us 👍
