Snowman Weather
It’s a little late for snow-related shenanigans considering it’s already March, but hey, I’m sure some places still have snow! Either way the two dragons better enjoy it while they can.
Pst, super sorry for not posting anything last week. I’m preparing for exams in school and it’s been so, SO busy! I’m glad to be drawing again though :)
I also have a new comic up on my Patreon! You can check it out here!
evil teacup
[I was trying to get the hidden boss only to find it was the GOD DAME CUP!]
[also it was like 20ish but I had to walk away from the game for awhile]
Thinks about Kingers passivity and how Caine can't truly hate Kinger for it because his love for humans outweighs his resentment.
To think outside the box

A story about how a tiny gashapon prize got even better! ✨ Have you ever gotten super good gashapon luck? Nothing beats getting the thing you wanted on the first spin 🥹
This is from our book Our Super Japanese Adventure which is all about our first trip to Japan! We’ll have copies at Hyper Japan in London this weekend, come say hi! 🌸
Tbh im p new to tumblr and don’t pay much attention to the sexy men polls but i noticed tennas gotten rlly far from what I’ve seen lmao 😭 if bro wins I’ll continue and try to finish the another believer animation i started back in January 🙏 was planning on doing the whole song too so I’ll try and lock in
I think about The Man of the Hole so often. 27 years alone. 27 years with no one to speak to but strangers to wave to. Survived a genocide, a massacre that killed everyone he had ever known and later, an assassination attempt. He still tried to warn researches about the traps he built. He was only about 60 when he died in 2022. The people who tormented him in life later desecrated his grave.
I do think it is important to share the stories of the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island and Ishi and the countless other indigenous people who experienced the profound trauma of being the last survivor but it is important to remember that the last Aboriginal families in Australia to be contacted by Europeans were resettled in the 1980s and the Indian government has proposed a plan that will mean total genocide for the Shompen people. The total eradication of indigenous peoples, their cultures, their languages, their ways of life, is not something which occurred in a distant ugly past but an ongoing process.
Oh there was just a radio/podcast special about Ishi last week and I invite you all to learn about the story. It’s so shocking and tragic and heartbreaking.
His family was the last surviving population of the Yahi tribe and when they died he came into contact with US Americans for the first time looking for food and help. They held him in jail until they could figure out what to do with him because nobody spoke his language. Then they brought him to the UC anthropology museum because they at least had some documentation of his language. Alfred Kroeber (father of Ursula K LeGuin, so she would have grown up around Ishi and had family dinner with him) pretty much took care of him, had him living in the museum, and made his life’s work documenting everything about Ishi and his culture and knowledge as possible. They were able to record and document so much and had him doing public demonstrations of various traditional skills and crafts.
And he spent the rest of his life living in a museum. He wasn’t held against his will or anything and he got paid for his work, but still so tragic to be the last of your people and solely responsible for making sure that knowledge and culture doesn’t die with you. I think all this is at the anthropology museum at UC Berkeley now, but UCSF might still have some archives.
Get to know the man himself — not just as a victim of his circumstances — but for the remarkable human being he was.
owning these mixes should require a license like owning a gun requires a license, I think
WHY WOULD YOU MAKE A MALINOIS BUT FASTER???????
Controversial Opinion: this is going to actually result in dogs that are MORE sane than the original Malinois.
The thing about Mals is that they are very smart, very capable and really, really, REALLY want you to make all their decisions for them. They're extraordinarily biddable if you're confident enough, but if left to their own devices, they get into Descision Paralysis Hell, which is why so many of them are so neurotic- they NEED to have a job or The Horrors (TM) get them. Part of the reason they make such good security animals.
Border Collies and Cattle Dogs OTOH, are very independent thinkers who were bred to make complex plans and decisions all on their own. If left to their own devices, they don't develop panic attacks, they amuse themselves. mostly by doing crime.
Hybridizing a more Independent/Criminal breed into a Malinois is the first step into outcrossing Mals for health/less anxiety.
The Whippet is similar but in the opposite direction: Sighthounds aren't decisive or ambitious the way that Border Collies and Cattle Dogs are, but they also don't worry about shit- unless they have something to chase, they're perfectly content to chill out as a Couch Potato. The drawback of being so chill is that sighthounds are A Little Stupid. Some of them really could get lost in a paper bag.
Miss Firefly up there is definitely very Nyoom, but once she's NYOOMed to her content, she will probably be happy to vibe in your immediate proximity.
My childhood dog was... weird. A major mongrel. She followed my mom home one day when she was running by the canals, and then we just had her. But the two major breeds I remember her being mixed with were were husky (which was especially cruel for an Arizona dog wandering outside, poor thing) and border collie.
And she did many strange things, but the one I remember most happened one easter. My parents went around the yard, hiding eggs everwhere. And according to them, Leah (the dog) followed them, watching very intensely. Made sure she saw where each egg was put. Some of the eggs were put in spots that a dog really shouldn't have been able to reach, like in a tree.
Then my parents went to bed, and Leah followed with.
Morning come, us kids went out to go out to find the eggs, and Leah had gathered them all into a pile. Very neatly. There was one egg that had been squoze open, and some jelly beans sampled, but she decided she really wasn't that keen on them. So the rest were intact. And Leah was very proud of the pile. She sat by it very proudly, as if to say, See? See my works? See my crafts? See what I have done?
See?
And I've always been kind of curious about what compelled her to do that. If she was "herding" the eggs, or if she was just bored and thought it was a puzzle or... what.
I guess I'm asking you. You seem to know dog psychology pretty well. I'm curious to hear your guess. Leah was always kind of a black box to me. There were times when she more like something pretending to be a dog than a dog. If that makes sense.

"I can't believe humans would hunt the thylacine to extinction, humans are fundamentally evil" Hey, did you know that extinction was long thought to be impossible, and within 50 years of humans realizing that extinction via overhunting was a possibility it practically stopped happening? Did you know that humans are so desperate to prevent more losses that they're funneling millions of collective hours and billions of euros into helping other species? Hours and euros that could be spent on humans, and species on whom humanity's own survival does not depend? Did you know that due to an accidental introduction of rats, the Lord Howe Island stick insect population was brought down to 24 individuals and now there are tens of thousands of them?
This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.
@crabussy
as someone in the field of ecological conservation, I can promise without a shadow of a doubt that people DO care. SO MANY people care.
I have to race to sign up to volunteer trips because even with dozens of spots available, people rush to devote their unpaid free time to helping the environment. these trips often fill up within hours. people care.
you will see a lot of bad news because that is the kind of news that people pay the most attention to. I know this more than you'd think from my optimism- not only do I live somewhere facing some of the most extreme ecological issues on the planet, I also spend my time studying the Bad Stuff every single day.
to see all of this firsthand and stay hopeful is proof enough that there IS hope. I promise there is good news, brilliant news, all the time. it's just less visible. but it's no less important or impactful.
that is the face of a man worried he will be next
Good news, he was not next! In fact, she accepted him as her mate, he learned the crane mating dance and now every year, he artificially inseminates her with crane semen to expand the very endangered crane population. True story.
Sorry, he WHAT? Imagine being this man's boss and having to sit him down like. Listen. Brian. We need you to fuck the bird. You have to act like you're excited about it.
crane husband.....
this is the diametric opposite of all those awful swan wife stories and i love it.
(WalWaPo makes you jump through like three separate hoops before you can read the article, so I will share some of the highlights:
Walnut was born in a species-recovery breeding program in the 1980′s. The program had crane chicks hand-raised by human volunteers, and at that time they did not fully understand the measures necessary make sure that the chicks do not imprint on humans and retain their identity as cranes.
As a result, her keepers believe, Walnut does not recognize other cranes as members of her own species.
It has not been proven that Walnut killed her previous suitors; however, there is a persistent rumor in the white-naped-crane-conservation community that she did.
Because this species is highly endangered, and the gene pool of the captive population is small, it’s pretty important for the survival of her species that Walnut A) mate, and B) not kill a bunch of other cranes.
The actual name of the keeper is Chris Crowe.
They both arrived at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in 2004.
Walnut immediately began paying special attention to Chris--and ignoring the eligible male crane in a nearby enclosure.
Walnut initiated their courtship, performing the opening moves of a mating dance.
Chris realized that if he reciprocated the mating dance, it might be possible to artificially inseminate Walnut with her participation and consent. (The process normally involves restraining the bird.)
It worked!
Chris and Walnut have had five children, who were raised by other crane couples at the facility--sometimes the biological dad and his mate--both because it’s unclear whether Walnut would accept the chicks as her own, and because Chris is not equipped to be a Crane Dad.
However, the Institute provides her with artificial eggs to sit on, and Chris takes his turn looking after them. (This would not work with real eggs because he can’t sit on them properly, but Walnut seems to feel that he is on the job if he just stands over them.)
Chris accepts that he is pretty much married to this bird. White-naped cranes live to be about 60, and they mate for life, so he knows he can’t retire while Walnut is alive. (At the time of the article, Walnut was 36, and Chris 42.)
Legit cannot pick the funniest part of this
she has not been PROVEN to have killed her exes, but there is a PERSISTENT RUMOR (really officers she's simply DEVASTATED, she sobs, wearing a new feather boa unfortunately resembling her most recent deceased husband)
His name is Chris CROWE. (Mrs. Walnut Crane-Crowe?)
the mental images of a whole human man learning and performing the crane mating dance, and "sitting" on artificial eggs so she thinks he's performing his duties as a husband and father (and apparently OBJECTS if he does not?)
"chris, buddy, you gotta marry the possibly-murderous crane lady for the GOOD OF THE SPECIES." (alternately: "chris, my man! good news! we found you a very interested lady! She's 36, she's very spirited and independent, she holds a very important and rare status in her society! ...Is there a downside? WELL...")
chris sits any potential human partners down, like "my love, you must understand before we wed,,, i am already... Attached" (camera drifts wistfully to the above photo) "Lady Walnut and I have an,, Understanding... the relationship is open, but very committed"
just had to explain this post to my father bc he thought my stifled laughter was a signal of illness.
well done, everyone, good game. hit the showers.
Not only is he 'married' to walnut, this has apparently happened SEVERAL times, so he has MULTIPLE crane wives, none of which know about any of his other crane wives. This man is, for some unknown reason, irresistible to cranes
the “this content has been removed for violating Tumblr’s Community Guidelines” notice really adds a lot of flavor to this post and somehow makes it MORE obscene than whatever that actually was
World Heritage Post
I regret being the bearer of bad news, but I thought it should be shared that Walnut passed away in January of this year (2024). There's a lot of mixed info about the lifespan of cranes (due to people misunderstanding what a median is...) but the average for most species I know of is 20-30 years (in the wild if nothing eats them/they don't die young), and 30-45 in captivity, with the oldest known white-naped crane having loved to be 46. Given that she was 42, this old gal did good, and I'm certain she will be missed by folks here.
Fly on forever Walnut Crane-Crowe
