We live in a culture that actively suppresses queer knowledge and history. You cannot blame someone for ignorance born of that kind of indoctrination. It’s not your responsibility to educate, that’s true, but it’s also selfish and harmful to attack people who are trying to be better. It’s more helpful to reach your hand out and risk getting burned than to burn that bridge yourself.

I was talking to a table full of middle age cishet folks about trans rights in sports, and one of them paused, and very carefully asked me “i’m sorry, but the terminology is confusing me, is a transgender man a woman, or is a transgender man a man?” And they all just nodded at the question and I realized they were cautious about the concepts not because they didn’t want to understand but because they didn’t know how to. So many people would be on our side if we just reached out to them at their level. I spent the next hour talking about puberty blockers and how they were completely safe, about how surgery would never be done on a child, about hormones and intersexuality and the binary, and maybe yeah they didn’t deeply understand the spectrum of gender at the end, but now they have starting points, context, and most of all, a way to combat transphobic illogic because they now have facts, human representation that we are here, and we are normal. They were so grateful to me because no one had ever sat down and explained even the terminology we used and they could finally interact. Its so important to me to give everyone a chance to try to learn.

Something that I think Steven Universe did that was really funny and underappreciated was titling their lighter filler episodes like "Mega-Diamonds: Shit Gets Real" and then their plot heavy episodes like "Lion Goes to the Beach :)"

the kira killings stop the moment light joins the tennis club and it becomes obvious to everyone that light was kira but L doesnt want to lose their top player right before they go to nationals so it abruptly pivots back into trying to fool the police again

I strongly suspect that the rise in horrifying recipes in the 50s, 60s and 70s is that this is when recipes were being used as advertising. Whether or not the recipe was tasty or even palatable at all was a secondary concern at best to if it could convince a housewife to buy more Chlorox Brand Lard™️ to try it out.

Interestingly, there has been a resurgence of that exact phenomenon, which perhaps you’ve seen: viral cooking media Meme recipes of unfamiliar origin? Videos of impossible recipes or trick editing? “Life Hacks”? I bet these will be the Horrifying Sixties Recipes of tomorrow, because they are also made to sell attention rather than to inform.

At this point, I would like to remind you all of Ann Reardon, and her youtube channel “How to Cook That” where she not only debunks and explains the trickery behind all those “viral baking hacks” but also provides ways to ACTUALLY make those things where possible, as well as a numberbof other delightful recipes, and often has her willing husband taste test the internet’s culinary monstrosities. She’s the hero we need so 50 years from now another Dylan Hollis won’t destroy his microwave or his face trying to make “ ‘this easy 2 ingredient microwave caramel!!!’ that comes to us from 2021 from the channel ‘5 Minute Crafts’.”
