Dracula Daily Accountability Poll!
July 20: You are an employee at Seward's asylum. What do you think happened to Renfield's birds?
they flew away! all of them! when you weren't looking! weird!
he ate the birds (normal reasons)
he ate the birds (weird sex reasons)
he ate the birds (weird non-sex reasons)
it was self defense!
they're on a nice bird farm upstate
they're migrating south for the winter. in july. climate change, y'know.
what birds? i never saw any birds. no one can prove renfield ever had birds.
i don't get paid enough, i am pointedly Not Getting Involved and walking away
[puts in two weeks' notice]
to be honest i'm more concerned about dr. seward's behavior
the birds are still there, they're just invisible to non-believers.
I wonder if βwe have to torture this special character. in the lab facility. with secret science.β is an interest all 12-year-old children share or were we just the generation exposed to Maximum Ride
Youβre right. How could I forget to credit anime for its role in putting the special character in the secret torture facility (for science).
Genuine question: Isn't this just Bond villainy and/or medieval torture dungeon? Or what kind of facility are we talking about?
The Facility is a critically important part here. See itβs a Science Facility. Itβs run by a very shady clandestine organization, which is incredibly powerful. Theyβre maybe part of the government, or if not the government then something Illuminati-like.
As such The Facility is very high tech, and likely buried underground or hidden somewhere no normal person can access. The Torture being done is for Science, which the Facility is for. Itβs all scientists in lab coats doing the torture. There is so much lab equipment and probably a lot of devices hooked up to the special character which will beep and go off the charts when the special character has a violent mind explosion. This part is important.
A lot of really good mentions in the notes here
Mewtwo
Secrets of Nimh
Wolverine
Akira
Elfen Lied
Shadow the Hedgehog
And a special mention to the couple of people identifying that a 12-year-old stuck in school all day is, perhaps, in a way, a special character being tortured in the science facility.
Seeing people I know and like using AI is making me understand the protagonists of those old time sci fi dystopia's.
"Oh I don't normally use AI, I just wanted it to plan my trip"
You lived on this planet for decades, you know what you like, there are hundreds of websites where you can type into any search engine " things to do in [area]" and have at least a hundred different options.
"Oh I only use it so I can figure out what to make during the week with what I have"
The most popular website as you type in "recipes" into google have sections where you click dinner- quick and easy and those usually rely on staples + 1 or 2 items. I found 30 recipes on chicken alone.
"I had a writing idea, so I typed a few sentences into Chat GPT and I was able to write 20 pages with it."

Washington Post is paywalling the article but it looks like Taylor Farms β a consumer bagged salad brand that also supplies produce to grocers and fast food chains like Taco Bell, Walmart, McDonald's, Chipotle, Burger King, KFC, and Meijer βmay be at least one of the sources of the current cyclosporiasis outbreak.
Taylor makes bagged greens, salad kits, chopped salads, the works. Keep avoiding supermarket greens, but keep an especially close eye out for this brand/supplier. The above list of grocers and fast food chains is NOT exhaustive, so please continue getting lettuce and other raw produce taken off your burgers, sandwiches, etc.
Shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms and sold at some Taco Bell restaurants has been linked to a multistate outbreak of cyclosp
Non-paywalled article now on CNN.
Hey Canadian pals, this company does have produce sold in Canada, notably ready-to-eat salads at Sobey (safeway, thrifty foods, IGA, etc.) and Loblaw (superstore, shoppers, etc.) stores. So while no outbreaks here have been linked to the massive issue in the US (yet), it might be a good time for a bit of caution.
The FDA said that the shredded lettuce was a false positive as of the evening of July 19th. So we no longer have a confirmed source for any state, at least to my understanding. And keep in mind that the shredded lettuce only accounted for cases in 5 of the 34 states with cases.
I would highly recommend going to your state's health department on the topic for specific information about the outbreak there.

Me: waiting for any form of public transport
Rain: starts
Some deep dark part of my brain that never forgot the first night vale episode: ππππ§π§ππππ§
oh gideon nav is the lesbian of ALL TIME. sheβll explain how hot every woman she meets is and how their eyes seem to pin her down and how a blush runs up to her cheeks whenever they look at her and she canβt say no to them
and then at the end of the paragraph sheβll be like βoh and some sort of man was also present. he was a little bitch.β
hey so I realize people are probably joking saying this but in case it needs to be said: do not plant bamboo, mint, kudzu, or any invasive plant by data centers (in the US) in an effort to stop them. destroying the ecosystem should not be a way to stop something from destroying the ecosystem.....
Wouldn't the smarter thing to do be planting plants that are actually protected in the state you live in ? That one HOA piss take trick or whatever.
this heatwave fucking sucks how am I going to serve my liege like this

my house is scary at night
Interpreted this initially not as shelves, but as your cat having erected defensive fortifications
I know which movie based on Greek mythology I am going to see this week
The racist and transphobic tears being shed over the casting in The Odyssey almost make me want to see it.... almost.
I mean just imagine looking at Lupita Nyong'o and not thinking, "Yeah, that's the most beautiful woman in the world, I'd go to war for that." You must be seriously estranged from beauty to think anything else.

I love episodes of Game Changer where the only way to win is by learning & the only way to learn is by playing. With some episodes, like Don't Wake Standards & Practices, the overall flow of the game becomes pretty apparent pretty quickly, & also there's some surprises along the way. But then there's episodes like Count the Rice, Deja Vu, or Bingo, where the basic conceit of what the game even is is an ongoing mystery. I love that stuff.
also can we talk about the game design of count the rice?? brilliant
the only challenges that require multiple people are at the beginning and end - at the beginning to allow the players to bounce around there for a bit before they realize they need to go down, and also at the end to ensure that a runaway player has to wait for another to catch up
count the rice itself, of course, can only be played with one player, so that players never actually have to count rice (if you had to wait for a second player at the end, then whoever got closest would win) (this is ofc not accounting for hannah pilkes)
the middle rooms are great too, because they are easy to intentionally fail, and hard to win. the spot the difference rooms are especially good, because you think you understand what it is (spot the difference between the two halves of the room), and this is seemingly confirmed when you successfully loose, but once you come back to try to win, you realize you did not actually fully understand the game. the placement of these is important, too - only players who were intentionally trying to lose got to those rooms. any higher in the sequence, and they might have had a player trying to win reach the rooms first, and then they'd realize the twist
and also the decision to split the rooms up? 2 and 3 in a separate space from 4-8, so players would assume there are only 3 until someone loses enough, subtly hiding the majority of the game from them
ugh just so many little details in the game design here are so perfect and well thought out, game changer is clearly such a labor of love
