The Void

As I was afraid they were gonna do, they stole Karma's whole shtick & gave it to Jean.

So in the comics, Xuân Cao Mạnh is a Vietnamese girl who found she had the mutant power to possess people. Her twin brother Trân had the same ability. Long story short, they both ended up in the US, he was a bad guy & kidnapped their younger siblings, she was a good guy trying to rescue their younger siblings from him, he took over the minds of The Fantastic Four & used them to fight Spider-Man, Xuân stopped him & absorbed his consciousness, making herself more powerful, & then took on the codename Karma before leaving to join The New Mutants at the Xavier Institute.

Meanwhile, comics Jean comes from a boring upper middle class family who were reasonably supportive of her, & she generally doesn't possess people a ton.

Now, in the movie, Jean & her sister Sarah (who was a normal human in the comics) are both mutants who were kicked out by their parents, & who both have the telepathic ability to possess people. Sarah is kidnapped by Damage Control who experiment on her to try to understand how to replicate her powers. Jean is trying to use her powers of possession to find & rescue her sister, at one point she uses the Hulk to fight Spider-Man, ends up becoming more powerful, & ultimately leaves town, presumably to return in an X-Men movie down the track, after she & Spider-Man both learn the power of friendship.

If I had a nickel for every time that an MCU Spider-Man movie stole something interesting about a character of color from the comics who had never been adapted to film & gave that something to a white character to revitalize them after having already been adapted to film twice before already, I would have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

But then I realized that they're literally playing a game of telephone, with a telephone, & I understood. Also they got evolution limbo, so what do I know about game difficulty?

Because like, canonically, Pokémon predate humans & had some part in the development of human language. So why not extend that out to cave men being like:

"Hey, what's your name?"

"Mr. Mime!"

"Oh, good to know. What's that thing you're doing with your hands?"

"Mime!"

"Oh it's called miming? Glad we have a word for that now. Anyway, you're kinda like a guy, like me, but you mime."

"Mr!"
