seeing a parent cradle the head of their hurting adult child always gets me. nothing can get between that. someoneâs baby is never above being cradled and lifted and kissed, especially when in pain.
and the sequel: youâre never above or too old to get a blanket draped over you while you sleep
having a multi year long character obsession becomes like a abstract thought experiment at some point
does anyone else get really happy listening to their favorite band bc thatâs your favorite band that youâre listening to. That is your favorite singers voice in your ear rn. this is what ponyboyâs track meets look like
HeyâŚ. Hey⌠Characterâs covered in blood, okay? You remember characters covered in blood?? You used to love characters covered in blood
The detail that Ponyboy isnât wearing a coat that night.
All throughout that fateful night and its many cataclysmic events - the drive in, the lot, the slap, the jumping, the stabbing, running to Dally - thereâs the through-line that itâs cold outside and Ponyboy didnât think to wear a jacket, so heâs walking around freezing in a sleeveless sweatshirt the entire night.
Heâs exposed, unprotected, unprepared. Heâs in over his head.
Heâs a child. He hasnât mastered the basics of taking care of himself. Forgetting to wear a coat when itâs cold is classic shorthand for âchild.â Heâs about to go through things that would break an adult, and heâs just a child who canât even remember to wear a coat when itâs cold outside.
He tries to look tougher than he is, like he doesnât need protection. He tries to look invincible but he just looks vulnerable; in fact all the more vulnerable for trying so hard to look tough. Everyone tries to tell him that heâs not taking care of himself properly, but he wonât listen.
The way a different character, specifically a different member of his family/his gang, comments on it at every juncture. At each point in the night, at each different location - first Darry at home, then Johnny in the park, then Dally at Buckâs - all comment on Ponyâs insufficient outfit. A demonstration of how Ponyboy brings out everyoneâs big brother instincts. Everyone speaking as portents of fate, like the three witches in The Scottish Play, prophetically warning the protagonist of cold and âfreezing to deathâ and âpneumoniaâ: of the looming danger and death and illness and tragedy.
It makes his circumstances that much worse. Sleeping in the lot, running out after Darry slaps him, getting drowned in the fountain, heâs that much colder.
Itâs a sweatshirt with the sleeves cut off. Itâs a shirt that was made with sleeves, thatâs supposed to have sleeves, but doesnât. They donât have the things theyâre supposed to have. Money. Safety. Parents. Anything they do have is defined by the absence of its complete function. Whatever resources they have are sparse, ripped up, insufficient imitations of what theyâre supposed to be.
Itâs a background detail of discomfort throughout the whole saga, seemingly mundane but vital. It doesnât seem as important as almost drowning, but it exacerbates it. The discomfort the hardship of their environment is always an undercurrent of their more dramatic problems.
Itâs Darryâs care and lack of care at the same time. Darry scolds Ponyboy for not wearing a coat, but then hits him which is what drives Ponyboy to run out of the house into the cold, but the cold is part of what makes Ponyboy want to go back home despite everything. Itâs all the ways Pony needs Darry to take care of him but doesnât want it; wants it but wonât admit it. Itâs all the ways Darry takes care of him, and all the ways he doesnât. All the ways Darry tries and all the ways he fails.
Itâs Sodaâs sweatshirt. Itâs a hand me down, as is probably the youngest brotherâs entire wardrobe. Itâs clothing thatâs not his, that heâs tried to customize for himself only to have it end up worse, less suited for its intended purpose. Itâs a classic greaser piece of clothing - a ripped up DIY hand-me-down - and Ponyboy isnât quite suited for Sodaâs full fledged greaser uniform just as heâs not quite suited for Sodaâs full fledged greaser lifestyle.
It paves the way for Dally to give Pony his jacket at the end of the night, but at the same time doesnât really, because even if Pony was wearing a jacket, even if it kept him warm all night, it would have ended up soaking wet and useless after the fountain. No matter what superficial protection he has - a jacket, a blade, a busted bottle, a companion - he would end up a target by virtue of who he is and the world he lives in.
Itâs the first time Pony notices Dally performing an act of kindness that surprises him. Itâs the first time Pony notices Dallyâs similarities to Darry as Dally takes on a parallel big brother role: ââyou ought to know better than to run away in just a sweat shirt, and a wet one at that. Don't you ever use your head?â He sounded so much like Darry that I stared at him.â Itâs the parallels between Darry and Dally, the two older characters who seem cold and hard because Pony canât see the good in them just yet.
Itâs Ponyboyâs vulnerability. The image of a kid walking around in a sleeveless sweatshirt shivering in the cold, evokes vulnerability. It makes you want to wrap this poor kid up in a hug, usher him indoors, make him change into some warm clothes, wrap him in blankets, and make him tea. But instead you watch what happens to him instead. You watch as heâs slapped by his brother and guardian, jumped, almost drowned, and sent on the run for murder, and all the while heâs not wearing a coat and itâs dark and heâs soaking wet and his sweatshirt is sleeveless so thereâs no barrier between his skin and the blood of a dead boy, and he is so, so cold.
Thinkin about how Anyway by Noah Kahan is so Soda (and Darry!)-towards-Ponyboy coded bc of the coat line specifically
Couple + Sibling/relative third wheel is honestly an S-tier trio dynamic and I wish we saw more of this in media.
"You are my soulmate. We are forged together by battle and tears and love. Also my brother's coming along."
"Yo."
it's like...the tension between taking responsibility for your own happiness AND also knowing that you cannot fix your body or your mind or your life. you have to be utterly dependent on God. but taking responsibility for yourself in a healthy way often involves utter dependence on God. because expecting Society(tm) to fix you is making an idol of other people. and saying "everything is futile and i'm completely out of control" is actually a form of idolatry too because if God so clothes the lilies of the world how much MORE will he clothe you oh you of little faith!!!! and you will never be entirely whole but there is a way to live in your situation that affirms God's mercy. there's a way to live where the yoke is mysteriously easy and the burden is mysteriously light, where you're struck down but not destroyed. where you are recklessly loving and letting God love you through a thousand different channels! and you are neither martyr (derogatory) nor parasite!
and it's so hard to communicate that because it can so easily sound like prosperity gospel or secular psychobabble!! but what those ideologies don't get is that life will never be easy. life and easy are antonymous (is that a word? yeah i looked it up. it's a word). but the yoke can be easy! the calling and burden! maybe because when you're living rightly in impossible circumstances there's a certain thrill and freedom and lightness to it. when you know for a fact that you are choosing life and holiness and it costs everything but it's kind of fun and like you have never been more yourself and never been more alive and never been more whole in that moment. (though that feeling is of course not a constant.) like feast in my hall o foemen and eat and drink and drain! you never loved the sun in heaven as i have loved the rain! like craving life like water but drinking death like wine! like even if you are dying you are dying in love with life and so you are so gloriously alive and even after you're consumed the glory of a life well-lived will ripple outward and affect even acquaintances and then someday you will live again.
yeah. something like that.

Baby monk
Is it me, or is the passage about how Ponyboy and Johnny used to go to church together written kind of oddly?
âIâd been in church before. I used to go all the time, even after Mom and Dad were gone.â
It strikes me as odd that Pony says âIâ instead of âwe.â It makes it sound like he used to go alone, as opposed to going with his parents. Iâd be inclined to brush it off and assume he means he went with his parents and then after they died he kept going alone. But then we get this part:
âWhen Johnny and I went, we sat in the back, trying to get something out of the sermon and avoiding the people, because we werenât dressed so sharp most of the time. Nobody seemed to mind, and Johnny and I really liked to go. But that dayâŚ..::anecdote about the gang being disruptive:: Everyone in the place turned around to look at us, and Johnny and I nearly crawled under the pewsâŚ. I hadnât been to church since.â
This doesnât sound like a church where his family went regularly. It doesnât sound like he knows these people, and from his self consciousness about his appearance, it doesnât even sound like theyâre from his neighborhood/community. If they knew his parents, wouldnât they make a point of greeting him when he came to church, of asking how he and his brothers were doing, instead of ignoring him while he hid in the back row? Wouldnât they recognize Pony and Soda instead of just staring at the disruption? If this is the church Pony grew up attending with his whole family, wouldnât everyone there know him? Why would he hide in the back and why wouldnât anyone come say hi?
It reads like either Pony used to go to church alone (and the âeven after mom and dad were goneâ may refer to him maintaining his faith after their death), or the people at his parentsâ church are shitty people who made no effort to reach out to the orphaned children of their deceased congregants or to make them feel included when they show up. Or maybe after his parents died he started going to a different church, but why would he do that if he was so self conscious about how he appears to strangers?
no wonder selena is my favorite on the next pro. sheâs a former project 21 dancer.
