I hear his laugh in times of gracious recollection. I see his face in familiar strangers with the same beard structure. I see his eyes when I meet someone whose are not nearly as blue. I hear the tone of his voice when he said “no it’s not ok” when I give the same sentiment. I’m moved to tears remembering our late night talks.
He says “hey!” and I’m taken back a few hundred days, under the the beating sun with the shut of the door. I respond, “hey!” and my anxiety fades. He extends his arm to me, but it’s different from the first—you know me. He smiles wide as the day is long, his eyes warm, and I see our first conversation by the doors, our fifteen minute lunch, and every time I’ve passed you by and couldn’t help the smile tugging at my lips. You always returned them.
