"YOU DON'T KNOW ME"
There's something so painful in that line to me.
Because, Derek is essentially saying "How can you die for someone you don't even know? How can you die for a stranger?"
And while it may seem like Derek is being a bit of a hypocrite---considering he only met Avery a few hours ago, he really isn't.
Because Avery isn't a stranger to him.
He knows Avery. Infinite knowledge let him showed him who Avery was. He knew Avery's name. He probably knew Avery's favorite color and his favorite food. He could literally identify a fake (seemingly identical) Avery.
Derek knew everything about Avery.
Avery wasn't a stranger to Derek.
He was his dearest Avery.

Wattpad: pay me monthly 🤩 and we will remove ads for you. also free offline stories I guess as long as you keep paying me. but we have censorship so keep your kinks to yourself. what we don’t have is tagging systems, so good luck trying to find what you want or avoiding what you don’t want to read lol
meanwhile AO3: so everything is free in our house. read whatever you want offline. also no ads. no capitalism. no censorship. be as wild as you want with your fics. also we have tagging systems so you can search or avoid any specific tags, pairings, relationships or characters. whatever you want.
I’m sorry but if you’re still complaining, you don’t realize how good you have it with AO3, one of the last platforms on the internet that is free of capitalism and censorship. just artists and writers creating and sharing their works with the community for free and for fun. just authentic love between artists, their works, characters, stories and audiences.
thank you ao3 for being an archive and not an algorithm. thank you for letting me like things without consequences, thank you for being free with no ads, thank you for having lawyers to defend our freedom of speech. thank you tag wranglers. thank you to all authors and thank you ao3
Thank you ao3
You live in a world where everyone has forgotten magic. You are reading a history book in your father’s home office. “To maintain the great forgetting spell we assigned a family with the duty of keeping this secret past. The great calamity can never repeat.” “…what are you reading?”
Alright, kid. Cats out of the bag, magic is real, i can't very well stop you from using it, but do you know the terrible secret of magic? It's really too obvious to guess. It's really fucking easy. You play DnD, you know what a fireball spell does? I can do it, right here, right now. Took me five minutes to learn back in the day. I'm not specially gifted or anything, anyone can learn that spell in five minutes or less. Anyone can learn any spell in five minutes or less. Here, flip over to page 17. Relieving a tooth ache, turning a human into a frog, summon a sentient cloud of radon gas, all beginner spells. Don't summon the cloud. I can make it vanish but it is sentient and i'm not in the mood for murder. Anyway, page- uh... any page in the 500-ish section... ah yeah. Adding and subtracting protons from every atom of a specific element in an object, turning off the strong force in a radius, forcing a person to digest in reverse, adept spells. Take the same time to learn. Anyway, don't flip this page open but toward the end are the expert spells. Turn off gravity. Like, everywhere. Forever. Change the speed of light, there's a spell that's labelled "The End" but you know the concept as false vacuum decay, make suns produce dark instead of light. Oh yeah, there was once such a thing as darkness, like not in the absence of light, but as its own thing. They used to have lanterns you could turn on on a hot day for some shades. Cool, huh? That concept has been erased from reality. Can you imagine a world where everyone can wield that power? All it takes is to learn a couple lines of text and you, or me, or the president of any country, or any old disgruntled asshole could turn every last atom in the universe to lead in an instant. Yeah. Anyway, we're tasked to keep the book around and not tell anyone about it and that's about it. We're not prevented from using it. I suppose you wanna conjure a mansion and heaps of money, but perhaps you wanna turn to page 34 and look at that spell labelled "Joy in simple things"...
You live in a world where everyone has forgotten magic. You are reading a history book in your father’s home office. “To maintain the great forgetting spell we assigned a family with the duty of keeping this secret past. The great calamity can never repeat.” “…what are you reading?”
You try to hide the book from your mother, but it's too late. She's seen what you were reading. She sighs and closes the door behind her
"I had hoped it would not be you, but the Book chooses whom it will"
"The book ... chooses?" you ask, confused
"Yes. It chose you. Do you think we'd just have that book sitting out in the open? Or did you see that book here yesterday when you were in this office?"
"I don't think so ... but I assumed I just hadn't noticed?"
"No, it wasn't here. The Book manifests to the one it chooses. And it's chosen you. I suppose there's no use delaying it now." She motions to the book. "Continue reading"
You look back at the book, frightened by her words and the implication behind them. Chosen for what? For this spell it just mentioned? What is it you have to do? You open your mouth to refuse, but you find yourself speechless, and you feel a compulsion to read the book
"No one can fight the Book forever" she tells you "My grandmother tried to refuse it. For three long years, she refused to open it. The Book kept appearing before her. She tried to bury it, threw it in a fire, tossed acid on it. But no use. The next day it would appear, and one day she opened the book without though. She tried to close her eyes, but her eyes would not close. She tried to look away, but no matter where she turned her head, the book would be right in front of her. She even tried gouging her eyes out, but no use. The words appeared in her mind"
You faintly remembered your great grandmother, blind, with a bandage around her eyes. No one had ever told you what happened to her eyes until now
"I'm so sorry. You've been Chosen"
You turn back to the book and open it, accepting your fate
"... These were the words spoken by the Great Enemy, the Forgotten Lord, He Who Forgotten Himself. But not all was lost, for there was another of equal power, one who had once counted him as a friend. She used all her power to try to stop him, but she was too late, and in the end, her power only kept the Forbidden Knowledge safe within this tome. And you, dear reader, have been chosen to continue her work, preserving this knowledge, and seeking to undo the spell, just as another has been chosen to continue the Forgotten Lord's work"
And so you read the story of the Forgotten War, the story of how a group of enlightened sorcerers sought to bring about a world of wonders, to bring magic to the masses, to cast down the mighty and uplift the downtrodden, to bring about a world where everyone had all they needed. And you read further, and learned of the ways of Magic. Not the stuff of fairy tales, but a true power behind all the universe
The great wizards of the time feared their loss of power if everyone had magic, and they tried to destroy these sorcerers, who formed a great army they called the Army of Light. The war was destructive, and many died on both sides, but the Army of the Light gained the upper hand, and the great wizards' armies fell back
And then the Forgotten Lord proposed to the other wizards a great plan to reverse their losses. He made a great spell of Forgetting, which would, he promised them, cause the Army of Light to forget their powers and their goal, to restore the world to what it was before
But the spell was much stronger than expected, and the spell spread over the whole world, and all magic was forgotten. All the wizards lost their power. All charmed weapons lost their charm. Floating castles fell to the ground. Those Who Could Change Form found themselves trapped in whatever form they were in when the spell was cast, and forgot that they had ever been anything else
Without magic, the great wizards were but merely frail scholars, and the remnants of the Army of Light easily defeated them, though they did not remember why they hated them, only that they did
Even the Forgotten Lord himself forgot why he had cast the spell. He remembered only that he had, and how to maintain it. He believed himself heroic in his act, having forgotten even the greed that motivated him. The Keeper of Memory alone remembered the full story of the war. And so the Forgotten Lord passed his self-appointed duty to the Forgetters, just as the Keeper of Memory appointed another to Remember

Thank god fanfic is free because I can’t afford other hobbies in this economy.
Most use magic spells to tame monsters. But without access to magic, you had to tame, train, and bond with yours the old fashioned way. It has proven to be a lot more work, but the results were nothing short of spectacular.
