Derek thinking he's a lot more stonefaced than he actually is. He's not ostensibly readable but once you've been around him long enough it starts to get really obvious on what his immediate thoughts are. But he doesnt know this. He thinks he's got world's best poker face when actually he really doesnt and hes scowing so hard you dont have to be a wizard to figure out he is Displeased at something.
Avery taking a while to learn this more subtle way of communication, cus while Derek isn't wholly deadpan he's not the most traditionally expressive either. But bit by bit it gets criminally easier to tell when exactly Derek is lying or hiding something. Esp since Avery is more alert on that sort of thing since New Year's. But yeah. He finds out that Derek literally cant stop himself from grinning and getting flustered and all but writes "IVE GOT A MASSIVE PUPPYCRUSH ON YOU" on his forehead whenever Avery's around.
