I'm Snohomish Coast Salish from Washington state. My tribal language is Lushootseed.
Our word for butterfly is: yuΚyubΙΔ. In Lushootseed it means βlittle king salmon.β The reason for this is because when the yellow swallowtail butterfly arrives, that is how my ancestor knew that king salmon was on his way and they had to prepare for the arrival of the salmon people by having a ceremony.
yuΚyubΙΔ is very sacred to use because they basically announce the arrival of food and the arrival of summer as well.
