a feeling fills your chest when, for a moment everything seems different and changed and it’s not necessarily that you’re getting older, although it never helps that seventeen feels so far from you now and maybe you half expected this feeling to grow softer, maybe quieter every year. you’re not sure if it’s joy for how far you’ve come or sadness in understanding you’re a shape in a chair at a desk and today is only Tuesday. the feeling is not epiphany nor bittersweet, but there’s no poem or playlist of songs you have on hand to articulate this swell in your chest. do you cry just to clear it and move on? do you sit in this sensation and for a while, just acknowledging it? how can I give this idea to you? how can I share it so we both understand? how can we find the right words? how do I befriend this fear so I’m not sore from carrying it? maybe it’s just august again. maybe these days pass too tangibly. I wake and feel I’m losing my feathers.
