He still dreamt about him sometimes, prone to nightmares whenever he didn’t take his sleeping pills. The pills dulled everything, made it so he didn’t have to toss and turn for hours and afforded him the kind of dreamless sleep he’d never had before. But sometimes, Aaron got weird about the pills, sometimes he thought about dying too much, about that day his mum took him to the swimming pool when he was six and Aaron dove too deep and got a bit lightheaded, how easy it would’ve been to let go then, how peaceful, how quiet, and so he flushed the pills down the toilet, and then he had to wait the appropriate amount of time to ask the doctor for new ones, so she wouldn’t think Aaron was doing anything weird.

“Relax,” Katie said. “I can’t,” Chas complained. This pub was a great deal fancier than she’d expected. She tugged on her top again, trying to find the appropriate neckline for the occasion. “He goes to Scotland and finds a bloke he actually wants to introduce me to—he’s never wanted to introduce any…” She trailed off as she caught sight of Aaron, leaned against the bar, a big smile on his face all for the fella he was with: tall, with great hair, matching Aaron’s smile and toying with Aaron’s hoodie string. Robert Sugden was pawing at her baby boy. “Robert?!” Katie beat her to it. Robert’s head whipped around. His expression turned from surprise to contempt in a second. Definitely Robert, then. He pulled his hand away from Aaron (good) and said, “What the fuck are you doing here?” Aaron’s smiled dropped. He looked from Robert’s withdrawn hand, to Robert’s turned-away face, to her and Katie, and back to Robert. “How do you know my mum?” “It’s Robert Sugden!” Chas spat. “Katie's Robert!” "Definitely not," Katie and Robert said at the same time, and then scowled at each other. Aaron crossed his arms tight; the movement attracted Robert's attention, and he stared at him. “Chas is your mum. Chas? You didn’t say you were a Dingle!” “Funny that, you didn’t say you were a Sugden.” “I’m not,” Robert said, throwing a caustic look Chas and Katie’s way. “It’s Merrick.”

“Do you remember when Aaron and I blessed our marriage in here?” Diane looked up from polishing a glass. “Of course I do.” She gave him a mock-offended look. “I may be getting on a bit, but I’m not senile.” A smile tugged at Robert’s lips. “You two were so young.” She rested her elbows on the bar, her expression softening. “So hopelessly in love.” Robert stared into the amber liquid. “We were only eighteen.” He let out a quiet, humourless laugh. “We were idiots to think we’d found our forever person at that age.” “No, you weren’t.” He looked up. Diane’s voice was gentle but unwavering. “True love doesn’t care how old or young you are.” Robert looked away again. “True love?” He swirled the whisky around his glass. “Diane… I’m marrying someone else.” “I know.” “I asked Chrissie to spend the rest of her life with me.” “And she’s a wonderful woman.” There wasn’t a hint of insincerity in Diane’s voice. “She’s kind. She’s funny. She clearly adores you.” Robert nodded. “She does.” “And I can see that you love her.” Diane sighed. “But, Robert…she isn’t Aaron.”

It's not like Robert is unused to headaches. You get hit around the head as often as he does, you become accustomed to a bit of pain. He's also gotten good at hiding them, so good in fact that sometimes he doesn't even realise he has a headache until he stops and thinks about it.

This headache is making itself known. As he walks through the farm, moving buckets of feed from one barn to the other, he tries to catalogue it. Tension headache? No, that would be wrapped around his head like a band. Dehydration? Usually hits him right behind the eyes. Sinus? Would be localised to, well, his sinuses. This is everywhere.

It's everywhere and it's sharp, and his head feels heavy with it, and he can't focus on it.

Fourth place is not a bad result, fourth place is not a bad result, fourth place is not a bad result. No matter how many times Robert repeats it, it doesn’t sound true. Nicola is flapping around him, as she is wont to do, and he’s really trying to keep a lid on his anger as he heads for his driver’s room, “Nicola!” he snaps, “Can you, please, leave me alone for like, ten minutes?” “I don’t want you destroying anything,” “I won’t. Promise.”  He smiles sweetly at her and watches her walk away. As soon as he opens the door he hurls his helmet at the wall with a yell. Aaron only just ducks out of the way in time, “Woah! What the fuck?”

He stopped and stared for a while at the crime scene before him, hay bales toppled where Robert had stood. It was just hay. Soft and harmless, shouldn't have been enough to topple a man like Robert, who got knocked about once a month by fists and cars and shovels and hammers–

Aaron clenched his fists. He would be better. He would protect him better.

In the corner of his eye, he saw something move behind the trailer, and he raised his fists by reflex.

“You can take those down, I'm not gonna jump ya.” Serena stepped out from behind the car with her hands raised. “I'm just here to talk.”

"We need to talk to you about your husband," the DI had explained after they'd introduced themselves and flashed their badges. Then she'd told them, because Robert's still the next of kin and they have to inform him, that Kev had been found dead in his stupid cake van a few hours ago. She hadn't called it stupid. Aaron added that part.

She's my niece, and I love her as if she were my own, and you know that. You don't get to try to cut me out now. And if Robert were here —" "Robert's not here!" Aaron roars. "He signed off on any rights to do with her when he decided to get himself locked up before he even met her." Vic's cheeks have gone flushed, blinking rapidly as she swallows. "He's appealing." Aaron freezes. "No, he's not." "Yes, he is," Vic insists. "I asked him to." "Yeah, two years ago, Vic," he reminds her, biting. "What makes you think this time will be any different?"
