“Robert, your breakfast.” He presents it to him like a butler serves food to his master. Robert takes the plate and accepts the chaste kiss that Aaron is also offering, “Thank you. Where’s yours?” Aaron falters, the emotion in his eyes empties and he blinks blankly at Robert a couple of times. Then, like he’s a computer rebooting himself, he says, “I’m not hungry. I’ll get something later.” Worry flares up in Robert’s head; Aaron has a habit of skipping meals when he’s self-flagellating but he doesn’t want to cause an argument the morning after they get back together so he lets it go. If he notices a habit forming, he’ll bring it up. Aaron plonks himself down on the sofa cushion beside Robert, not leaving an inch of space between them. He rests a hand on Robert’s thigh while he’s eating, laying his head on his shoulder and sighing contentedly. Vic watches them with a look of complete bafflement on her face until it winds Robert up enough that he snaps, “Shouldn’t you be heading to the pub, sis?” She glares at him and slams her empty coffee cup down on the coffee table. She doesn’t say a word as she gathers her bag and her chef hat and storms out of the house. Robert feels his appetite shrivel into nothing, only halfway through his breakfast. Aaron’s hand rubs at his thigh, “You should move back in,” he murmurs, “What?” “She’s clearly unhappy that we’re together. You should move back in. Move back home.” Home. Robert’s next breath shudders in his chest, “I’d really like that.” It’s when Aaron takes his plate from him to put it back in the kitchen that it clinks against his finger and Robert realises that he’s put his wedding ring back on.

Going back to my OG fic. My first baby 🥹🥹
Here is a snippet from, "I've Been Living with Devils and Angels."
“Loving you, yes, it has been like nothing else I’ve been gone through but, neither has being without you; the misery I felt staring at your picture, that cut deep. The days where I would have your grumpy tone on repeat because I’d forced you out the bed, to go to work, that’s misery. The endless moments of our vows and our wedding, both of them, knowing I cut that vow away without giving you, us, a chance to prove prison couldn’t beat us? Yeah that killed me.” Robert had to take a moment but he still looked towards Aaron with absolute certainty. “The messy stuff, the hospital rooms, watching you almost die? It hurts and I want to punch every wall and every man for even letting the world entertain the idea of you not existing in it, but, I would want to go through it with you, than live a life of emptiness without you. You make everything possible, you are my everything. I will never stop fighting for you. I did that once and I regretted it for six years. I’m not doing it any longer.” Robert let the silence have an opportunity for impact. Aaron’s face crumbling with emotion, his jaw shaking as he tried to sustain confidence in his vocal ability. “We have always been messy.” Aaron choked out. “Coming out of prison, it was supposed to give you chance for better.”

Truth be told, just the feeling of his heels pressed on the wooden floor felt like his own personal ecstasy. The sound of silence would have usually left a repulsed aftertaste lingering on the papillae of his tongue, however, Aaron’s snoring long into the early hours was what enabled Robert to remember he no longer needed to be a frightened bird, but cocooned in an embrace of fur. He loved hearing the rain hit the window and the sound of a kettle ready to make his organs heat up – very alien to the usual ash and dust he was prescribed to while incarcerated.
Although he laughed in the right moments, poked at Aaron’s waist as they learned the rhythm of their kitchen habits again, with the remembrance that he liked to share – or rather, nick – Aaron’s breakfast meal, even if Aaron was none the wiser; he still felt like a guest in the resting place of Aaron’s heart.
The intoxication overflow did not help this deep-rooted insecurity Robert was sure he could keep at bay. One too many shots at the bar – cheers Sarah - and Robert was drowning in his inability to believe Aaron’s acceptance and love would remain a permeant fixture. Despite being unbreakable the last time they were united, they were basically on their last swing into pandemonium.

This is from chapter four of I’m Coming Home to You.
Aaron had always been there since they were eight years old. Through scraped knees and broken bones. Through detentions and football matches. Through every important moment Robert could remember. And right now, he was the only thing stopping Robert from feeling completely lost.
Before he could think about it, Robert leaned forward. Their lips met. For a second, Aaron went completely still. Then Aaron kissed him back. His stomach flipped and his skin tingled as Aaron’s lips moved against his. Robert reached for him, his hand gripping the front of Aaron’s shirt.
The kiss deepened. Their foreheads bumped awkwardly before they found their rhythm again, and when Aaron’s tongue brushed against his, a shiver raced through Robert from head to toe.
Everything else disappeared.
The fire. The grief that sat in his chest like a stone. For the first time since losing his mum, the pain wasn’t consuming him. Warmth spread through him instead. And it felt good. Far too good. Robert jerked away as though he’d been burned. His mum was dead. And here he was kissing his best friend and enjoying it.

I'm up to 18,000 words of this fic and counting, lmfao. Still soooo much I have left to write as well omg. Here's a moment I loved writing that I can't wait for you guys to read. This fic is a whole lot of angst, but there's still some fun moments interspersed, lmao
---
Robert can't help chuckling as he takes another sip of his beer. "Can I get you a drink, Aunty Val?" he asks. "Oh, you always had a charm about you, didn't you!" she says, giving him a cheeky slap to his shoulder. He nods, then gestures toward Doug. "Doug, can I get Val a—" he trails off, thinking of what kind of drink she'd like, and thinks of the first thing that comes to his head. "Can I get her a Kir Royale?" "Bless you," says a woman at the bar with a thick Geordie accent. Robert thinks her name is Kerry. "Can she get a what?" Doug asks, his brow furrowing as if he's never heard of the drink before in his life. Robert shakes his head. "Oh, I like the sound of one of those," Val says. "You know me and my extravagant drinks." "You usually opt for a gin and tonic, you do," Diane says. Val shakes her head. "No, I'd like a Kir…fuffle? Whatever Robert just said." Doug blanches. "Well, I don't know how to make a kirfuffle." "I'll make it," Robert says, rolling his eyes. Then he looks at Diane. "That's if it's alright with you?" Diane shrugs. "Guess you can show off what you've been doing all these years."

They deserved a change in scenery. Somewhere their husbands didn’t have a sway. The road stretched out before him, the midday sun intruding through the clouds just off the course. He could take them anywhere. He could keep driving, the hum of the engine their only companion. Robert would wake up, and they’d be someplace nice, somewhere with a beach or a rocky coastline.
It's Seb's eighth birthday, and Aaron can't help but think about what happened to him at that age. With a sleeping Robert in the passenger seat, he could take them anywhere. But Robert isn't his, not anymore, and Aaron is hurting.

you can feel it on the way home
"Hello, Aaron," she says, as congenially as possible. "H-hello, hi, Mrs Brearly," he stumbles, still wide-eyed and blinking at her. After nearly a minute of a staring contest, she prompts him, "What can I do for you today?" Aaron stares at her, mouth opening and closing not unlike a fish, before he finally blurts out, "Have you seen Robert recently?"

summary: in a vague, unspecified universe where john goes to prison, robert learns to cope one friday night at a time
save a horse, ride a cowboy
"Well, hang on," Aaron calls, "It'll take you forever to walk up to the farm with him, and in this heat, you'll be passed out in no time!" Robert scoffs at him, a cheeky smile growing on his face. "I wasn't planning on walking," he says, before grabbing hold of the saddle, hitching his leg up to the stirrup and heaving himself up and over the horse. He shifts slightly in the seat, getting comfortable and Aaron shifts in his seat as his jeans grow tighter at the sight. Robert looks… majestic, yet sinful, and Aaron's mouth drops open when Robert visibly squeezes his thighs around the horse, guiding it to move. "I'll be back," he calls over his shoulder, before coaxing the horse into a trot and riding off towards the farm.
