The song is brilliant and I’ve got Words about it, and the way he talks in the song makes me wonder if Cesare was in a fugue state running to his cabinet, OR, if it was all Caligari’s doing

I think Caligari, considering his veins are in the walls of his room, and the way he talks about the watchers in Stone Jars, and how the twists and turns of the walls appeared, made the chase scene the way it was. I don’t think Cesare intended to run into his own cabinet. I think the shape of the halls shifted. I think Cesare was lead to his cabinet like a mouse in a maze being played with by the cat who’s going to eat it. Caligari is playing with his food. He could’ve shoved Cesare directly in the cabinet, or let him scurry before catching him and slamming the door. He chose the sadistic option of letting Cesare scramble before crushing him.

Caligari’s power definitely does stretch beyond his room, despite how sickly he sounds and the fact he doesn’t move from his spot.

and i watched VENEZIA again (bc today is presumably the next episode and also it’s 6 am and i have not slept) and every time Cesare gets visions of the other watchers (a few seconds after blinking) the layout changes. it’s like image-burning powers, like images burned onto old film or nensha (like the ring) ya know? it would be nuts if Caligari could do image-burning in Cesare’s mind while changing the layout. it would be straight up bizarro insane + creepy as fucking hell.

This line of Friends in Low Places indicates that Cesare died during a holiday (talk about adding insult to injury lmao). Until the latest episode I had assumed it would be either Christmas or Halloween since those are the ones most commonly referred to with the term “hallowed”. But assuming he dies the night of the flashback, it looks more like this takes place in the middle of summer.
